Three Red States Are The Best Hope In Schooling

A ray of hope is emerging in American education. (snip) [H]ope emerges in the most unlikely of places: three states in the deep south that long represented America's educational basement. (snip) # Louisiana ranks No. 1 in the country in recovery from pandemic losses in reading, while Alabama ranks No. 1 in math recovery. # The state with the lowest chronic absenteeism in schools is Alabama (snip.) # Once an educational laughingstock, Mississippi now ranks ninth in the country in fourth grade reading levels, and after adjusting for demographics like poverty and race, Mississippi tanks No. 1 while Louisiana ranks No. 2 (snip.)

Comments:

Not paywalled. A genuinely fascinating and encouraging article on educational progress in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi (although the author reverts to form toward the end.)

I have to say I am somewhat surprised to see this in the NYSlymes. Maybe there is hope for them yet. Our own family experience in the public schools in Hancock county, on the Mississippi coast: The education was there, for those who wanted to learn. Two daughters and one son, graduated in 2008, 2010, and 2012. My wife was one of a group of moms that volunteered and helped at the schools. All three kids had straight A's all the way through. Our younger daughter was a National Merit Finalist, with the other two just a nick behind, all three each earned a full academic scholarship to one of the state universities. Our older daughter is now a civil engineer, our younger daughter is a certified interior designer (the architecture of the interior of a building), our son earned a PhD in molecular biology, and works on developing vaccines for some of the more unpleasant diseases that are around, but don't make the news. Darn right I'm proud of 'em..... and there is a saying that "It ain't Bragging if it's True."

Laissez les bon temps rouler! Had quite the life, been to 41 of the 50 US states and lived in 4, been to 29 countries and lived / worked in 4 and am now retired and tending to grand children as Paw Paw in Cajun Country (Southern Louisiana, home to Tabasco for the uninitiated). A lot of jokes are made of the deep South but I'll tell you something truer than true - I've never been anywhere where family / children / grandchildren / faith / country / personal integrity and hard, honest work (not to mention great food) are more deeply ingrained into the very souls of the vast majority of the local inhabitants. Yes it is simpler here than more sophisticated places but families are for the most part tighter and orientated towards doing the best they can for their families which includes backing the best possible education for their children. Being a relatively poor part of the US this education for the most part needs to come from government provided education which I am very happy to see has stepped up its game to increase the odds that the offspring of this land aren't being indoctrinated but truly educated.

OK, sounds good at first blush. BUT... is this because these three states have upped the quality of their instruction, or because the states who used be top have just totally collapsed in teaching?

FTALikewise, low-income children are more likely to test proficient in reading in Mississippi or Louisiana than in California, Massachusetts or New York. In blue states, kids are used as political props to extract more money for the school district and indoctrinate with liberal tripe.

I heard a radio story on the ‘Miracle in Mississippi’ citing their great success in reading scores all due to teaching phonics again. The best way to learn to read is once again proven to be phonics.

My dad only had a fifth grade education, but he was very good at Math. I didn't get the math bug, but many of my dad's other descendants did. My mom dropped out of school at eight grade because she became a wife and mom, but she loved to read and write, and was quite talented in many other areas. Wonder how that happens to people without a full education. Government education is uber overrated. People need to teach their children at home!

The FBI has "substantiated" some major irregularities in how votes were counted in Georgia's largest urban area in the aftermath of the 2020 election and is probing whether those failures were intentional efforts to violate federal election law, according to a bombshell affidavit unsealed by a federal court on Tuesday. FBI Special Agent Hugh Raymond Evans first filed the affidavit last month to establish probable cause for a raid that seized about 700 boxes of Georgia 2020 elections ballots from a storage warehouse [snip.]

This is a tale of two federal judges -- one Trump appointee and one Biden appointee -- who separately sentenced two men for their attempted assassinations of a former (and future) president of the United States and a current Supreme Court justice. The Trump judge correctly followed the facts and law, sentencing the would-be Trump assassin to life; the Biden judge dangerously followed her political and ideological agenda, sentencing the would-be Kavanaugh assassin -- because he now pretends he's a woman -- to less than one-third of the recommended sentence.

The problem was the show’s conceit: It was a message of unity, inclusion, and togetherness — in a language that 85% of the population doesn’t understand and cannot speak. That’s not unity. That’s division. Lo siento, Bad Bunny and/or the NFL, but the underlying metrics of the NFL’s Super Bowl halftime show didn’t make a lick of sense: Only about 14% to 18% of the U.S. population speaks fluent Spanish — which means, of course, that 86% to 82% do not. Only 14% of the NFL’s total audience is Hispanic. The number of Latinos/Hispanics who speak English exclusively is growing, not shrinking:
