At a Tuesday afternoon press conference, Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman and Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell gave an update on the murders of legendary Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife, photographer Michele Singer Reiner.
Hochman announced that he would be filing charges against Nick Reiner on two counts of first degree murder with a special circumstance of multiple murders. Reiner also faces a special allegation that he "personally used" a dangerous and deadly weapon – a knife – in the commission of those murders. The charges, according to Hochman, carry a maximum sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole or the death penalty.

Fortunately, LA now has a 'legitimate' district attorney. Also, I'm thinking this article misstated the maximum sentence?? Shouldn't it be "...life in prison withOUT the possibility of parole or the death penalty." ?

Richard Ramirez (Night Stalker) was on death row in California for 24 years and died of cancer waiting to be executed. I wouldn't hold my breath.

The first thing Newsom did when he became governor, was to order the dismantling of the death chamber at San Quentin. I doubt the DA will ultimately charge Reiner with the death penalty.

Life. Possibly paroled in 20-25 years. He won't get the death penalty and you can be sure his lawyers will plead mental illness and addiction. Still, a sad end to a sad life.

#8, why would addiction keep him from getting the death penalty? If a person chooses to do drugs, it shouldn't be a pass to get out of any crimes they might commit. Alcohol can also be an addiction but if you get drunk and then drive and injure or kill someone, you don't get a free pass just because you are addicted to alcohol. Of course, this did happen in California and laws are different for the rich and/or famous.

So the son has hired that hotshot lawyer Alan Jackson. He will probably get him off because he is good at blaming every one else except the perp.

California liberals will have a caniption since Nick, who (allegedly) OJ'd one of their wealthier darlings, deserves the death penalty....but can't justify executing an orphan. Maybe they can think of it as a "post-term" abortion.

Phoney baloney "death penalty" means murderer Nicky will live for another 30 years, at least.

Nope. The defense will be mental illness. For the record, I do think he is mentally ill.
That being said, his life is over. Whether it be a jail cell or a state mental health facility, there will be bars on the windows.

Fry the worthless fiend. Rob Reiner wasn't my favorite person but this ingrate kid had all the privileges of fame and money and blew it all. I've always wondered how "by reason of insanity" excused one from the crime of murder.

This is ironic. I can say Rob Reiner was TOTALLY against the death penalty. That it would be suggested in his own murder trial against his son is, well...

He’ll end ip just like all the Manson “family”. He’ll get life without parole - and forty years from now, a bunch of idiots will be campaigning for his release on parole, saying “he’s CHANGED! He’s not the same person! He’s paid for his crimes!”

In California? Really? I thought they got rid of it decades ago, and that that was why they couldn’t execute Charles Manson. Or, do they make an exception for someone who murders a beloved, Hollywood leftist?

Yea right, it's California where the most notorious killers live to a ripe old age. Anybody ever heard of Charles Manson. Got it.

If you go back twenty years, on 13 December 2005, Crips gang co-founder Stanley "Tookie" Williams took "the ride" on the gurney for four shocking execution style murders in 1979 with a 12 gauge shotgun. The Governator signed the black bordered document that started the final phase of the punishment. Because Tookie had become, in prison, a children's author, his execution was controversial. If you saw crime scene pictures of his slaughtered victims, you would understand why Gov. Schwarzenegger proceeded with the execution. Everyone is going to die eventually. To hear death penalty opponents bellyaching about a few heartless killers who are fighting execution, you'd think the bastages were immortal. If the price for wantonly taking human life is not the life of the killer, his victims' lives are correspondingly cheapened.

This is the state that not only did not execute OJ Simpson, they gave him a pass so he could spend the rest of his life looking for the "real killer" on the best golf courses in the country. Ironically, he slashed a couple of throats just like Nick did.
