The enhanced Obamacare subsidies Democrats shut down the government to protect back in October are officially dead. House Speaker Mike Johnson slammed the door on extending the bloated COVID-era handout, saying the House will focus instead on moving forward with a new Republican healthcare package.
The temporary subsidies, born out of pandemic panic, were supposed to expire at the end of this year. Democrats, of course, wanted them extended indefinitely—because nothing is ever temporary in Washington when it involves taxpayer money. But Johnson made it clear on Tuesday that this was the end of the line.

If something is only "affordable" if the government has overwhelmingly subsidized it then what do you really have?
It's called a government jobs program that's adding layers of overhead to the health care industry.
I would think there is probably a much better solution that can actually help reduce the costs of health care without impacting health coverage for the average person.

It was a very bad idea, and it is good that they are gone.

Good news. And good work by the pubbies. Obie's ABA is hopefully soon to be replaced. Glad to see it. Tired of getting screwed on my medical plan premiums. Cigna and AARO, this means you.

And Speaker Johnson said three weeks ago that an ACA replacement that was more fraud-free was in the works. It is here. Mr. Speaker, does the Bill have a name yet? Sorry, Obie, you lose and give Mike my regards.

Rule #1 for the NEW health plan: the only medical procedure for which illegal aliens are eligible is assisted suicide. We'll pay.

The dems can start a non-profit to create a new health plan. People donate money as they choose. The non-profit distributes the money in a equitable manner. Not enough donations? Then, not enough pay outs. Simple math.
(No tax money needed.)

If Obamacare is as wonderful as the Dems say it is, why does it need to be subsidized?
By the way, still waiting for my insurance premiums to drop $2500.

This is a Huge win for working Americans. If some of the slackers get sick and die, that's only Natural Selection working to improve the planet.

It's great that the subsidies were "term limited" by dem design. They ARE dead and there is nothing the dems can do to stop it beyond squawk about it.
However, if Johnson thinks he is going to get the dems to work with Republicans on Health Care, or any other significant bill, especially in a midterm election year that the dems are desperately trying to win, he is dreaming. Their whole strategy is RESIST! anything the Republicans want. Plus it would have to kill BOcare to move on. That was about the only significant thing that BO accomplished. The Dems would be loath to admit it was a failure. It would be a nasty reminder in an election year that BO and Bidet's terms accomplished little that worked and a lot that was really bad.
Further, it could be a positive for Republicans to campaign on getting rid of BOcare because no one can afford the "Affordable Care Act" healthcare cost. Dems promised it would work. It didn't. It was/is a disaster.
Politically, healthcare is an issue that cannot be resolved for now.
It's great for Johnson to promise a new approach but it has little chance of getting done anytime soon.

Obama's signature legacy, seventeen years of health insurance nightmares for Americans. I hope he's feeling suicidal today over this punch to his inflated ego. John Roberts as well for enabling him.

Extended Obama care subsidies were never going to pass. Forget Republicans, Democrats don't want them to pass. They say they do but really want them as a weapon for the mid-term elections. Republicans better come up with and pay something. FAST! Thanks to Obama care, and Democrat setting expiration dates on subsidies, most people just got an even bigger insurance bill and can no longer afford it.

The "if you like your doctor.." 0bamacare is only one side of the coin. The other is a systematic destruction of private insurance. This has left millions in the lurch with nowhere to go. Without getting stuck on whose fault, Republicans, if they want to be the governing Party have to move proactively. Otherwise come November the people will blame them.

Let’s face it, when 90% of the cost of Obamacare has to paid by taxpayers, the last thing it is is affordable. The only ones doing well under this monstrosity are the insurance companies and the lawyers. Only the Democrats could design a medical plan this bad and this costly.

A nurse at a large hospital told me they're laying people off left, right, and center--especially those close to retirement. I'd be willing to bet that these layoffs are a direct result of the end of Obamacare subsidies.
Layoffs are always a bad thing (been there, done that), but the government needs to get out of healthcare.

Someone i know lost their subsidy. He was working age and single. His premium doubled. He told me if he was married with children or over the age of 59, he would still have it. I'm over the age of 59 and still have mine as near as I can tell.
Our government does not have money for this. Every time we raise the debt limit, I think we will be hit with another round of inflation. This cannot continue.
I think my policy premium is nearly 10k a year. It's 100% subsidized which is crazy. If I had to pay 10k for premiums, I would consider being uninsured. If the premium was realistic, I would likely have coverage. When something is that expensive, it is a luxury, not a necessity. What does one do when they cannot afford a luxury? They do without.

My 31 year old special needs son, working part time and earning about 18K per year... has a higher priced policy for JUST HIMSELF than we had as a family of FOUR just 10 years ago.
His policy's sticker price is 780 per month. Our family was paying 576 per month. He will pay 220 per month as things stand currently.
Now... part of the problem is the fact that for every actual health care PROVIDER there are TEN health care ADMINISTRATORS.
This is what happens when governments get involved.
AND, while I have this little soap box. The argument was lost when everyone just laid down their critical thinking skills and readily equated 'life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness' with the right to have access to any and all medical procedures that could extend one's life.
What will happen when medical science discovers a 17 million dollar procedure that adds 23 more days to one's life span? Clearly a ridiculous idea, but at what point does a society say 'enough is enough' and medical services are once again seen as SERVICES and not RIGHTS.
Oh... BTW, liberty includes the ability to travel. When do we get RomneyCare for our cars?
