Billionaire CEO warns he'll close grocery

New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s plan to create a network of city-owned grocery stores to drive down food costs is facing pushback from the industry, with the head of a Manhattan-based grocery chain threatening to sell or close the business if Mamdani is elected. John Catsimatidis, the CEO of grocery chain Gristedes, found fault with Mamdani’s plan, saying the business couldn't compete in the market if there are city-run supermarkets. "If the city of New York is going socialist, I will definitely close, or sell, or move or franchise the Gristedes locations," Catsimatidis told FOX Business. He will

Comments:

Might as well start the going-out-of-business sales. Zohran says city-run stores will not pay rent of property taxes. And there is no profit motive. So every convenience and grocery store will be undercut.

There is nothing the government can do that costs less than a free enterprise organization - UNLESS the government service is tax subsidized. So, you have cheaper groceries because taxes are higher to pay for the lower cost.

Sort of changed his tune from what he told Varney the other day. Said that the margin on his grocery stores wasn't worth the effort so he planned to get rid of them rather than pass the pain on to his heirs and focus instead on his oil and real estate businesses.

I can't wait til New Yawkers vote this commie into office. The remaining other people with money, most of whom have already moved out, will move out before he's even inaugurated. The grocery stores will all close up so this guy better be right on the minute in opening his freebie emporiums serviced by free buses and free subway rides. Shoplifting will disappear because there won't be anything to steal. I'm gonna need a lotta popcorn for this show.

My parents spent a year in Russia in the 30s when the U.S. and Russia were not yet mortal enemies (my father was an aeronautical engineer). My mother said they were under surveillance from the time they boarded ship in New York to the day they returned. The stories about the GUM stores are true - definitely not for Russians unless they were part of the Soviet inner circle.

One of my professors in college escaped from the Warsaw Pact. She pointed out that, yes, the Soviets guaranteed food, but you might only get cow udders and turnips for months on end. When her mother came to visit in the early 90s, one of the first things she did was take her to the grocery store. This was a basic store, not a premium store, or super center. The mother walked around in a daze. "Anyone can buy this? You don't have to bribe the manager? People can afford to fill these big carts? There's an entire section of just ice cream? There are this many flavors of ice cream? ... "

Running retail grocery stores is a detail-intensive business that produces razor-thin margins with the best of management. Asking a clueless government at any level to do it is laughable. The working taxpayers of New York will not survive this Mamdani fool but it's probably a lesson they need to learn on their own. It will be like living in Los Angeles without the sunshine.

$60 million is barely a down payment on what it’s going to cost in graft to put government owned food on the shelf. Where are these ‘rent free’ buildings? Will they be confiscated from property owners? Free buses, free child care, free child mutilation called gender care? There will be no rich people to tax. Guess who’s going to be paying for this.

#22, and yet they attribute Donald Trump to being Hitler. A lot of people think Adolph Hitler was a conservative when in fact he belonged to the Socialist party. I could never understand how Adolph Hitler was able to come into power in Germany. With reading what is happening in New York, I am coming closer to understanding. By the way #2, I don't think he changed his tune at all. The margin of profit he is making currently is going to be even more diminished. I look at what is happening in San Francisco and New York (very beautiful cities) and it sad. Apathy and lethargy seem to be taking over government minds.

One more thing… #14, I’ve been there. After 3 years in Romania under Ceausescu I returned to DC. The first time I went to Safeway, one of the things on my list was margarine. When I got to the dairy section, there were so many brands and types that I was overwhelmed and couldn’t decide, so I wound up not buying any at all. On the same trip I was in the produce section and heard an elderly man berating the stock boy about the price of oranges. I’m not the type to confront a stranger but I walked up to the man and told him that he should be thankful that he could buy oranges any time he wished and that maybe a few weeks behind the Iron Curtain might fix his attitude.

Zohran Mamdani, winner of the Democratic Party’s New York City mayoral primary, is overflowing with Marxist ideas of how to govern that are so lousy that it’s hard to believe he got more than his own vote in Tuesday’s election. Each of them is horrendous, from free bus services to rent control to punitive taxes on those who create prosperity, but none are quite so laughable as his proposal to establish a chain of city-run grocery stores. Mamdani’s campaign literature – overflowing with empty leftist jargon – says if elected he “will create a network of city-owned grocery stores focused on keeping prices low, not making a profit.”

On his first day in office — of his second term, not his wasted first term — President Trump signed an executive order ending anchor babies, the practice of treating kids born to illegals on U.S. soil as full-fledged citizens. (Apparently, our Founding Fathers wanted to ensure that poverty-stricken third-worlders who force their way into our country would never have to leave.) Three federal district court judges promptly issued (you’ll never guess) nationwide injunctions blocking Trump’s order. The Supreme Court is expected to rule on those injunctions any day now. It may be that the anchor baby lunacy is . . .

The Supreme Court is allowing South Carolina to cut off Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood, a win for pro-lifers that will clear the way for red states across the country to stop taxpayer dollars from funding abortion. The justices ruled 6-3 along ideological lines Thursday to permit South Carolina to cut off Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood. Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote the majority opinion for the Court, siding with the state against a private challenge brought by the abortion provider and a patient.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer is taking action to compel a top aide to former first lady Jill Biden to testify about the lengths Biden administration officials went to cover up former President Joe Biden’s mental decline. Comer subpoenaed Jill Biden’s “work husband” Anthony Bernal Thursday after he abruptly refused to testify voluntarily despite agreeing to do so. Bernal was scheduled to appear for a closed-door interview Thursday until he reversed course once the Trump administration decided to waive executive privilege for Comer’s investigation.

If you haven’t been to New York City before, you missed it. It’s not destroyed, it’s just a mess and not worth visiting. You still could – it’s great place to take the family if you love the smell of fresh urine on hot concrete coupled with potent marijuana, because you smell that combination pretty much everywhere. The city is dying, and we should let it. Progressives are all in favor of assisted suicide, we should join them in the case of New York and help the city kill itself. Only a complete embrace of socialist/fascist/communist policies (and there isn’t a dime’s worth of difference between the three)

I’m frustrated when colleagues treat evening news as gospel, eagerly discussing 60 Minutes or Rachel Maddow’s take on events. After revelations like CBS’s edited Kamala Harris interview and plummeting cable news viewership, I’m stunned that anyone still trusts legacy media, especially people who otherwise seem rational. A February Gallup poll reveals that 31% of Americans trust media outlets, with 33% expressing “not much” trust and 36% none at all. This is a sharp decline from the 1970s, when 72% trusted mass media. The poll highlights a partisan divide: 54% of Democrats, 27% of independents, and 12% of Republicans trust mainstream media. This gap reflects confirmation bias,

President Trump has teased the release Thursday of “irrefutable” proof that “fake news” outlets like CNN and the New York Times “lied” about the damage inflicted by the US strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. Trump said that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth would hold an 8 a.m. press conference at the Pentagon in honor of the “Great American Pilots” who carried out the bombings. “These Patriots were very upset! After 36 hours of dangerously flying through Enemy Territory, they landed, they knew the Success was LEGENDARY, and then, two days later, they started reading Fake News by CNN and The Failing New York Times.
