Rice University is offering an 'Afrochemistry' class that promises to analyze science through a 'contemporary African-American lens'.
Marketed as 'the study of black-life matter', a play on words merging science jargon with the Black Lives Matter movement, the course begins this semester.
The course description on the university's website explains students will 'apply chemical tools and analysis to understand black life in the US' and 'implement African American sensibilities to analyze chemistry'.
'Diverse historical and contemporary scientists, intellectuals, and chemical discoveries will inform personal reflections and proposals for addressing inequities in chemistry and chemical education,' it read.
Brooke Johnson, a Rice graduate with a PhD in chemistry from Princeton hired last August as part

"Black life matter" is beyond parody. You have to wonder if this is a joke. But academia keeps proving that they can't recognize their own foolishness, and the joke is on the students who pay for this nonsense.

This DEI/ESG garbage has infected all levels of education and dang near every school and business. Rice, like Harvard and MIT, in pandering to this evil nonsense is undermining what made its grads competitive for jobs and further professional training. Even my alma mater, Texas A&M, has succumbed as when it invited RuPaul to host his perverted show on campus in a memorial dedicated to those who have died to secure our freedoms. Our votes matter and our representatives must end this. We have lost at least one generation who think these ideologies are reasonable.

The class is chemistry/science in name only, it does not give any credits for a chemistry major. Its just another worthless DEI class. Even though Brooke Johnson has a PhD in chemistry from Princeton its probably best she not teach real Chemistry.

"apply chemical tools and analysis to understand black life" - That's code words meaning that the students attending class will be required to smoke crack or fentanyl, shoot and rob each other, and produce fatherless children in order to understand black life in the Communist Death Democrat run Ghetto Plantations.

Now, lets not dismiss this just because its stupid. White peoples' chemistry wastes its time on dumb stuff like alloys and fuels and suspensions and compounds and things.
Black peoples' chemistry would have a focus on things useful to them, like meth labs and explosives.

Here's an interesting sociological experiment. Let's take every organization, program, entertainment group and create a white counterpart. The White Entertainment Network, the White College Fund, National Association for the Advancement of White People, etc. I think you get the rest. What would the reaction be...charges of racism for sure, charges of white superiority, segregation and it would go on and on. Personally I think all these special black programs only serve to separate the races but maybe that's how the left, the original KKK political party, wants it.

Apparently, the DEI crowd has completely taken over this school. The new course is, of course, utter nonsense but will be listed at graduation time as full credit for a legitimate chemistry course. Would you want a doctor treating you who had studied Afro-Chemistry? Would you want a pharmaceutical scientist making up your critical medicines who took the same course?
The Construction and Engineering industries have long enjoyed jokes based upon Afro-Engineering, which is the definition of something constructed with wire, glue and duct tape. Would you want that new and improved method used to construct your car or passenger plane?
It already has, OP. 13% of the American population has been designated as 100% of our preferred leadership, talent and future high achievers, qualifications based entirely on skin color. If that isn't Afro-Mathematics, nothing is.

Other than slavery, the rest of that continent has produced nothing in recorded history. No engineering, no exploration, no great arts or academics, etc etc.

FTA "The description noted 'no prior knowledge of chemistry or African American studies is required' and there is no final exam."
So, what's the point? These kids don't have to know anything and they won't be tested on what they may have "learned" (I use that word loosely) I predict it will be a very popular one. As part of my college major, I had to take several chem classes; seems that my professors failed to teach that it's possible that chemicals react differently with each other depending on whether the cause of the reaction was socially just or unjust s/. Who Knew??? I wonder if I can get a refund on those courses ~ it's been over 50 years. Gosh, science has really changed in the past 5 decades!!

For Texans familiar with Rice, and their Marching Owl Band band, aka the MOB, known for their trademark gray felt fedoras as their uniform headgear and their on-field parodies of controversial and timely current events topics, one's first thought is parody. The MOB didn't exactly march, they "scattered," or ran in a heater-skelter manner to their formations. Academically, Rice has standards that makes its sports teams rather poor compared to other southwestern institutions. Unless Rice has had a complete internal coup, which is possible, I have to call BS on the study of "black life matter;" however, the hiring of Brooke Johnson, with her PhD from Princeton, a decidedly non-humorous bunch, may be driving this nonsense for real. When I was in grad school up the road in Waco, one of my lab partners, a son of legal Russian immigrants, who did his undergraduate work at Rice, performed his independent, original research and wrote his Masters thesis on the geology and geochemistry of kidney stones. While his topic was first thought to be a joke, it was legitimate scholarship, circa 1980, but it went against the grain, as most of the Geology professors were experienced and accomplished petroleum geologists. Most of the students had jobs in oil and gas exploration and production firms before graduation, including Mr. Naryshkin.
The Texas legislature, late last year, banned DEI in Texas, via Senate Bill 17. The "Afrochemistry" proposed sure sounds like parody, although the university's penchant from hiring professors from the Ivy League, increasingly activist females, may have set Rice, a private school, on the path to buck DEI laws and the Supreme Court's ban on using race in college admissions. If this Afrochem is actually real, then Rice University should crushed like their sports teams.

The only Afro-chemistry I;m aware of is purple drank.
From Wikipedia: Lean, also known as purple drank, purp, sizzurp, syrup, and several other names, is a recreational drug beverage, prepared by mixing prescription strength cough or cold syrup containing codeine and promethazine with a soft drink. The beverage originated in Houston and is popular in hip hop culture, especially within the Southern United States.[1]

How very provincial. Don't you wonder what Rice teaches about wars that occurred in different countries with the same color skin---such as Japan and Korea or China and Japan? Or weren't those "real" wars? Or were conditions somehow different for them because their skin color didn't exactly match up to certain strict standards?
Or...could it be that the ONLY people social justice advocates care about are those who can visually pass and tick off an approved checklist of very specific characteristics? Haven't we seen this somewhere before?
Or there could be another option and that's that brown/red/yellow/green skin just plain doesn't matter. Period.

In college I took General Chemistry, which was one of the most challenging courses of all, requiring hours per day of problem solving and, of course, lab work. How much general chem is in Afrochem? DEI is illegal discrimination, but now universities have entire departments devoted to promoting PC racism. When will DEI infect advanced mathematics? How can race be injected into it? Someone's thinking of a way.
