A defence chief has hit out after Prince Harry beat history-making British astronaut Tim Peake to be named a 'Legend of Aviation' for his work flying an Army helicopter in Afghanistan. [Snip] The Duke bagged the award despite only ever being 'number two' in his helicopter, acting as a gunner in Afghanistan--with his gong success today branded a 'pathetic' publicity stunt by Lord Alan West, the former head of the Royal Navy. [Snip] Retired British Army Colonel Richard Kemp also lashed out, claiming the awards were about 'celebrities massaging each other's egos'.

We will see if Harry is an honorable person by refusing to accept this unmerited award.

Re #1.....LOL! Harry is many things, but I don't think 'honorable' makes the list.

Did the article say Harry WAS Number Two in his helicopter or that he DID Number Two in his helicopter. Whichever it was, the whole thing stinks.

Interesting point about Harry.
FTA:
"An Apache is crewed by two people - a pilot and a gunner. Harry was a gunner. He was number two in the aircraft.' "
While both seats have flight controls, the primary responsibility of the gunner is the weapons systems, not flying. That is the primary responsibility of the pilot. And in this case, the gunner is in the front seat so that he can see targets better.
Harry is pretty much a fraud. I had thought he was primarily a helo pilot....but no, he was a gunner. HUGE difference in those jobs, as far as "legendary flying skills". Clearly his skills weren't up to the actual flying, so they made him a gunner so he could sort of pretend to be a pilot.
It's interesting that is brother William was a real pilot, and after getting out of the military flying, where he did 156 rescue missions, then worked as a pilot for a flying ambulance service for several years. He eventually quit because he said it "made him sad" dealing with people who were seriously hurt every day. In any case....he was a real pilot, and you can bet that he had to land many, many times in odd, small and dangerous locations near wrecks and such. Air ambulance pilot's have a difficult job, half the time landing and taking off from makeshift locations with trees, wires and other obstacles uncomfortably near all too often. And air ambulances only have one pilot, so he can't have just been along for the ride, as Harry was.
But....ultimately, he didn't need to do it, so he quit when it wasn't 'fun' any more. I'd rate William higher than Harry but both are pretty much creatures of an entirely artificial environment, and this has to warp them to one degree or another.

IIRC, both William and Charles flew for the RAF and Charles was involved in the Falkands conflict.
(If that point was mentioned in the article, forgive me. I can’t access the DM due to my ad blockers, which I refuse to turn off.)

#10~ With all due respect, there is another “side” to the story of why Prince William gave up flying for the ambulance service and that is having done so at the request of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. Queen Elizabeth recognized the danger of piloting helicopters for rescue services and with Prince William not only having a young family, but being second in line for ascending the Throne of England, there was a need to look to the future of Prince William’s young family and eventual kingship.

Wow! I follow the H&M saga very closely and we were all up in arms yesterday when this bogus, obviously purchased with a donation to the charity event “award” was announced. There is a former Brit military guy on You Tube whose channel has been demonized by YT for telling the truth about Harry & Meghan, mostly by exposing his fake military career (they called him Bunker Harry because he played video games in his tent, guarded by several of the Queen’s special military guards and that he FAILED several attempts at his pilot training, AND he never had to be drug tested, either). There are also stories of his abuse of native prostitutes in Afghanistan. He is a piece of garbage and deserves nothing but scorn. The Palace created his military career and lied about his accomplishments—it’s pretty well known. I’m glad to see people finally speaking out about this liar—perhaps the gloves are finally off and they’ve had enough! Stolen honor—period.

How many other "Aviators" spent an equivalent 4 months.. or more.. flying 2nd seat in the Middle east or other conflict zones?
What was the 1st officers name that he flew with? Shouldn't HIS service be more prominent than his VIP, resume padding, passenger's?
How many other 1st officers flew as many missions...or More?
This reeks of a "Beau Biden-Conspicuous Service Bronze Star" being granted for "Receiving lots of Media coverage" by a politically connected scion.
At least Harry(the red headed step child) may have faced incoming fire...Beau was never even close enough to hear outgoing fire.Never left the Saddam Palace.

RE #13, wrong royal. Andrew was a helo pilot in the Falklands....he was "the spare" and could be spared. Charles was the heir and no way he was going into combat flying. Reports are that Andrew actually did a good job in difficult weather and wartime conditions in the middle of nowhere that the Falklands are.
Charles was a pilot before he joined the RAF, and flew himself and family around many times in their small commuter airliner type of 'biz jet', a BA 146. He screwed up a landing in that aircraft and wound up in a ditch off the runway. Notably, the pilot in the left seat, an RAF instructor was blamed for the crash for letting Charles land.....so, apparently Charlie was out "flying" the aircraft, but rarely landing......which I can tell you is what the whole deal of flying is about. If you can't land, you really aren't a pilot.
Charles gave up his license after that. It seems like he was up to flying light aircraft that are slow and easy to 'stay ahead of', but when in a jet, where the aircraft requires precision and very quick, skillful handling, he wasn't up to it.
From the rest of Charles' life....I am not surprised at this. He isn't the sharpest pencil in the box and probably just didn't have what it took to do the jets, but apparently OK with small prop planes at much lower speeds.

This is not nearly as bad as the CBE, OBE awards given out to numbskull failed government officials in the UK. Those are of far more importance. Nothing should surprise us when lefties cover each other with medals and awards nowadays!!

A lot of good information there #10 but there are mixed stories and as with most things Royals, conflicting stories, details reported on both men’s time “serving in the military.” There was controversy during William’s three year (not hardly full-time) stint with the RAF. He occupied a key job that could have gone to another when he was not there regularly. Of course, any grumbling by other officers barely made the news. Also, there were several stories leaked about why he left. One was it “made him sad,” and another from the Palace saying he left to work more on conservation. It is a real undertaking to keep all the stories straight that are leaked in order to support and market Royal family members. LOL.

Aren't most of these awards about certain types of people 'massaging' each others egos? you can even put the Nobel in that category, along with the Kennedy Honors and the Oscars!

Re #14, I have no doubt that you are correct, but I quoted the reason that William himself gave to the BBC in an interview about his flying. This is HIS story, true or complete or not.
Perhaps he was being disingenuous to cover up the fact that he'd been told to stop risking his 'too valuable' neck because he had responsibilities to the crown.

Yes #25, I watched the interview. We all only know what gets in media, Royal interviews, etc.
There is a parcel of truth probably in each version of what goes on but bottom line we surely agree on is the craziness of Harry getting such an award. Crazy, Krazy, Krazee!!!
