DETROIT — Chrysler parent Stellantis is offering buyouts to roughly half of its U.S. white-collar employees to reduce headcount and cut costs for the automaker’s North American operations. The voluntary separation packages will be offered to 6,400 of its 12,700 nonbargaining unit U.S. employees with five or more years of employment, the company said Monday. (Snip) “As the U.S. automotive industry continues to face challenging market conditions, Stellantis is taking the necessary structural actions to protect our operations and the Company,” Stellantis said in an emailed statement. “As we prepare for the transition to electric vehicles, Stellantis announced today that

When word got out that federal officials had chosen Greenbelt, Maryland, to be the new home of the FBI’s headquarters, criticism came fast and furious from both leaders in Virginia and leaders in the FBI. While government officials in Maryland are celebrating the decision to locate FBI’s new headquarters in Prince George’s County, the General Services Administration is also defending its decision with newly-released documents showing agency leaders had been going back and forth about those same criticisms with FBI leaders for several weeks. In a news conference Friday, government leaders in Maryland responded to some of the criticism about

Virginia officials and the head of the FBI called on Thursday for the reversal of a decision to relocate the headquarters of America’s top law enforcement agency to suburban Maryland. They allege that the federal agency tasked with overseeing the relocation, the General Services Administration, which oversees federal real estate, failed to address what they said were conflicts of interest in the selection process. In an internal message to FBI employees on Thursday that was obtained by POLITICO, FBI Director Christopher Wray blasted the decision to move the agency to Greenbelt, Md., saying that a three-person panel made up of

Electric vehicles sure do seem safe and effective. Or am I mixing my propaganda? According to social media user Xian Ke, a Google-operated electric bus suffered a power loss on Monday morning while attempting to scale one of San Francisco’s many hills. The out-of-control bus then rolled down the hill and crashed into nine vehicles. Monday on X, formerly Twitter, Ke posted a 10-second clip of the crash’s aftermath. (Snip) “Some local journalists need to be on this: ‘A google bus lost its power while going up the hill and roll back and hit 9 cars this morning outside of

Former Obama adviser David Axelrod suggested it may be "wise" for President Biden to drop out of the 2024 race, on the heels of a brutal new poll which found him losing to former President Trump by up to 10 points in five battleground states he won in 2020. (Snip) The poll's findings prompted Axelrod to ask if it was in the country's "best interest" for the president to be the Democratic Party's nominee, with the risk of Trump defeating him in 2024. "Only @JoeBiden can make this decision. If he continues to run, he will be the nominee of

SAN FRANCISCO — The Northern District of California courthouse where David DePape will stand trial this week is unfriendly territory. The conspiracy-obsessed man charged in the hammer attack on the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in their hilltop mansion faces decades in prison. The trial venue is two miles from the couple’s home, in a courthouse named for the longtime congressperson’s mentor and in a city where she won her last election with overwhelming support. “Nancy Pelosi is a loved and revered public servant in San Francisco,” noted Valery Nechay, a local criminal trial attorney who is following

CHICAGO — Sophee Langerman was on her way to a bicycle safety rally in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood in June when a car turning right rolled through a red light and slammed into her bike, which she was walking off the curb and into the crosswalk. The car was moving slowly enough that Langerman escaped serious injury, but the bicycle required extensive repairs. To Langerman, it’s another argument for ending a practice that almost all U.S. cities have embraced for decades: the legal prerogative for a driver to turn right after stopping at a red light. Next week's off-year elections could provide a preview of 2024 for President Joe Biden, regardless of whether he faces former President Donald Trump in 12 months. Besides Gov. Andy Beshear's (D-KY) gubernatorial campaign, Ohio's abortion referendum, and Pennsylvania's state Supreme Court race, it is Virginia's general assembly elections that could prove to be the most predictive for next year. That is because of their potential to be an indictment on Biden's presidency amid speculation Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) is considering a last-minute bid for the Republican nomination — and there are no plans for the incumbent to stump there. Biden appearing

DETROIT – The investigation into the murder of Samantha Woll, a well-known leader in Detroit’s Jewish community, is entering its third week, and there are still many questions surrounding the case. Detroit police said last week that several persons of interest had been identified in the Oct. 21 killing of Woll, but no singular suspect has been publicly identified or charged as of Thursday. Authorities did share some information with the public last week regarding the evidence they’ve uncovered so far and provided a small update this week on the investigation. Samantha Woll, who also went by Sam, was stabbed

The final poll conducted by Emerson College has Kentucky's gubernatorial race in a dead heat. The poll, which surveyed 1,000 likely voters or those who have already voted, found incumbent Governor Andy Beshear and Attorney General Daniel Cameron with 47% support. 2% support someone else, and 4% are undecided. Among undecided voters, Cameron holds a slight advantage, according to the poll, with 49% support compared to Beshear's 48%. "Cameron appears to have gained ground by consolidating Republican voters who supported former President Donald Trump in the 2020 election," said Spencer Kimball, Executive Director of Emerson College Polling.
