Senator Robert Menendez (D., N.J.) maintained his innocence during a Monday morning press conference, insisting that the extensive corruption allegations laid out in a federal indictment unsealed Friday are false.
Federal investigators found nearly half-a-million dollars in cash and roughly $100,000 in gold bars when they searched his New Jersey home in June of last year. The New Jersey lawmaker insisted during the press conference that the cash was withdrawn from his personal savings account in case of emergencies.
“For 30 years I have withdrawn thousands of dollars in cash from my personal savings account which I have kept for emergencies, and because of the history

Oh, Bobby. Is THAT all it is? Well then, sorry, never mind. Here's your money and gold back.

Everyone keeps at least $500,000 cash and gold at home in case of an emergency.

Cash and gold aren't easily traced. What are you up to, Bob? Does he use e-currency? That stuff can be hard to trace too.

Clearly it was more than withdrawals for emergencies. Didn't his 'emergency fund' have gold bars? What bank pays withdrawn funds in gold bars?

Sure, Bob, everybody needs to keep a little cash on hand for emergencies. I do myself ever since we suffered a power outage for a few days. Credit card readers won’t work without power. My cash on hand is a couple of hundred bucks. Bob must be expecting something apocalyptic like an emp or nuclear war.

I keep several thousand dollars in my home for emergencies. I don't keep it all together but I know exactly where every dollar is. But over $400 thousand. Really? And scattered all over. Here, there and everywhere. To have so much you can just scatter it to the wind and hope that you remember where you stashed it? There is something weird about this, Bobby. Maybe it's a Latino thing I know nothing about. After all that is why they are after him. Latino with money is always on the radar. You need to talk to FJB/Hunter about off shore accounts and shell companies.

He sounds like Jon Lovett on the old “Saturday Night Live”: “I keep that money for, uh, uh, EMERGENCIES! Yeah, Emergencies! Yeah, that’s the ticket....”

I have no doubt that Menendez is corrupt, but when did it become illegal to keep cash and precious metals at home? They need to have evidence that it was obtained illegally.

I've always wondered...does a bar of gold work during an emergency? How do you buy a tank of gas or sack of groceries wirh a gold bar? How do you get change back? Asking for a friend.

Sure you have. What kind of "emergency" were you anticipating Senator? An immediate need to quickly flee the country?

As #11 points out, they need more than innuendo to nail Menendez, since liquid assets aren't illegal yet.. Or maybe they'll try a straight 'asset forfeiture' play to squeeze him.

Considering how often Democrats defend party members who are proven molesters, addicts, criminals of every stripe, I have to wonder who, how, and why he ticked someone off.

He says he has been doing it for 30years...that is $16,000 per year, over $1.300 each month. Should be easy to check the dates on the bills, are ANY of them 30 years old? What years are they from? Are any sequential? What are the dates on them?

Caught in flagrante delicto with piles of cash in his clothes, plus gold, a Mercedes, Egyptian sweetmeats, etc., Menendez really has no other strategy than to deny deny deny, and tell us that our eyes lie when we see pictures his lucre. We didn't really see that, did we? Did he get those cash stacks from the bank teller? It doesn't look good for him. Of course, Menendez has been reputed to be dirty for decades, so why are charges being filed now? More distraction? Send away one of the most venal and dispensable Democrats in the Senate (who will be replaced by another venal and dispensable Democrat), and what really changes? I don't know for sure, but it seems that if someone keeps over a half million dollars in cash and gold bullion amongst his clothes, he's planning for a significant emergency, perhaps the apocalypse. If times get really bad, not starving might require keeping a fishing rig, a scaler, and a Bubba Blade around in case food gets scarce again. Dinner swims just outside my back porch. Most of what swims in the nearby Gulf is not only edible but delicious if prepared properly. As Chris Christie might have said, "Eat to win."

I've got a few thousand in cash and gold and silver coins stashed away. Not nearly as much as most preppers recommend, but enough to get us through any widespread bank closures.
