“Ralph Nader is not going to be welcome anywhere near the corridors,” then-senator Biden had declared, blaming the consumer advocate for Democrat Al Gore’s defeat to Republican George W. Bush.
So began Nader’s long exile from Democratic Capitol Hill hideaways, where Nader had once been feted as a conquering policy genius. Nader, a spry 89-year-old who works remotely because of covid concerns, still resents the slight. But if you ask him these days about Biden’s reelection fight in 2024, he does not respond with his old gibes about Republicans and Democrats being nothing more than “Tweedledum and Tweedledee.”

I thought he was dead, too. He was a nutcase fifty years ago. I doubt he’s improved with age.

Ralph Nador is one of the worst people in American history. Right up there with John Wilkes Boothe.
He destroyed the Chevrolet Corvair. This car had phenomenal gas mileage. Literally 26-30 mpg in the mid 60's. Very popular with women buyers, who were becoming a retail force.
Had he not done this as "consumer advocate", Detroit would have a popular car in place at the time of the first oil embargo. Not to mention the other three automakers probably would have marketed similar vehicles.
The Corvair was being modified to a 2 seater ( Porsche competition )for sales at the time of his publication "Unsafe at any Speed"
GM had already fixed the problem of independent rear suspension with a Corvette type cross spring.
He destroyed the American auto industry's chances to compete in the 70's.

Nader has always been an evil liar. The Corvair hit job was a totally corrupt fraud.

His only claim to fame is that he made the Corvair a collectors item and increased its value about 400%. Otherwise hes useless.

In 1970, my first car was a red '63 Covair Spyder, 5-speed on the floor. I loved it. But, Ralph Nader was right. I was 16 and driving on the San Diego freeway in the left lane, on the way home from school with my girlfriend. The left rear tire blew out and the car spun around; out-of-control we were sliding backwards across the lanes facing the oncoming traffic. Blessedly, we hit the last three remaining feet of the Parthenia Avenue overpass guardrail or we would have slid over the 30-foot embankment. A flat-bed truck of hunky, young bricklayers stopped to help us and changed the tire. The Highway Patrol had to stop traffic on all four lanes so my car could be turned around. One of the bricklayers did that for me, as I was so shaken. I barely remember driving it off the freeway. It stalled out at the end of the off ramp, and another driver pushed us to the gas station on the corner.
The car was never the same after the accident. A few months later I went over a dip too fast and the transmission dropped out. (Hey, I was 16!) My next car was '59 Volkswagen, without a headliner. Didn't go so fast, and everything was groovy as long as it didn't rain - which we all know it doesn't in Southern California. Ralph Nader's a pain-in-bottom, but on the Covair he was right.

I've got to ask. What is he wary of? Secured borders? Energy independence. Low inflation?
The Abraham Accords?
Did he enjoy watching people fall to their deaths from airplanes leaving Afghanistan?

Is this fraud still alive? Ralph used to appear on TV to proclaim he was an impoverished consumer rights lawyer who lived by himself in an efficiency apartment, and didn't even own a car, a sort of "high priest" of the "Jesuit-Jerk School of Agnostic Consumption." It didn't take long however, before a curious investigative journalist caught the greasy-haired jerk getting into a limo owned by his sister, en route to the mansion, also owned by his sister! It turned out that his sister was in charge of a non-profit foundation for some "public rights blah-blah" stuff, which just so happened to be related to the work done by... can you guess? Yep, her bro, St. Ralphie.
