I used to make a joke about gambling and friendship – my best friend bet me $50 that I’d never beat my gambling addiction. I find it funny for reasons that, were I to explain them, would take away all the humor in the joke. I thought this up at a time when, if you wanted to gamble, you had to drive for hours to a small Indian casino, fly to Las Vegas or Atlantic City or, growing up in Detroit, drive to Windsor, Ontario, in order to gamble. Or, of course, you could know a bookie and bet on sports. Now, thanks to the desire of state governments

Not a monkey that hangs on my back. We went to Indian casinos out west twice and won enough to pay for dinner, but never had a big desire to go back and try again.

Never understood the appeal of gambling. It seems the same as lighting your money on fire. I’d much rather have a new pair of shoes. That being said, I have no problem if people want to gamble their life savings away. But, just as the author said, don’t expect me to subsidize you.

I'll "bet" that the same people who plan to strike it rich by winning the lottery, are the same folks attracted to gambling. A wise person once told me that the lottery is a "tax on stupidity." Neither fits in my world view.

If they build a casino and it costs a billion $$'s to build, do you think they will lose more money on top of the billion or they will make that billion back? Went ot Vegas once on a free business trip, I will never be back.

When the lottery started in Washington state about 40 years ago, I would buy one ticket a week. One dollar. The most we ever won was $27. After a couple of years I didn't buy any more. We also called it the tax on stupid and we put in our share. We would go to a casino whenever we would go camping, it was near the campground we stayed on the Coast. We would each have $20 and when it was gone that was it. If we won more than $20, that would go in our pockets and we would either spend what we won or leave. In 1970 we were visiting my Aunt and Uncle who lived in Las Vegas and believe it or not we brought an extra $50 dollars to spend on gambling. we split it so we had $25 each. My husband's money lasted longer than mine, he played the roulette wheel and I was playing the slots.

All of this sports betting is going to result in the demise of many families. Offering people $500 free bets is only done to suck them in. An old professor said “…never expect someone to do something for you, unless there is something in it for them…”

I'm with #3 on the lottery. The phrase I heard is that "A Lottery is a Voluntary Tax on the Stupid." Regarding casinos, the laws got changed and several casinos were built in Gulfport and Biloxi, MS, not too far from our home. The wife insisted we go 'casino hopping' one evening. She amused herself putting nickels into a couple of slot machines, and I walked around, looking at the clientele. Particularly late in the evening, the players are largely a group of losers I would never want to associate with. Among the crowd, I saw several people dragging around an oxygen bottle (that someone Else paid for) with one hand, and sucking on a cigarette (that They paid for) with the other hand. Not quite the tuxedo-clad crowd that they show in the casino scene in (all the movies had 'em) the old James Bond movies. I had no desire to play. Although each single 'play' is a random number, the more one plays, the greater the precision they can predict how much you will lose. The payback rates are not only known, but in our area they are set by law. Anyway, the wife got to pestering me to 'play one of the machines'. So.... I put a Quarter in one of those machines, and it KEP' IT! And I stopped right there.

I don't gamble at a casino. I don't drink and I have no interest in watching mostly naked women shaking their assets in my face. Not interested in a floor show. Just call me a stick in the mud. About three times a year I will buy $20 worth of lottery tickets when it approaches $500 million. Never won a cent. I know how addiction can ruin your life as my father and his whole side of the family were alcoholics except for his youngest brother. Hence, I am a non drinker. My mom's parents enjoyed going to the casinos out west. But my grandmother was a tough nut. She would take a set amount of money to play with. If she won that was great if she lost she'd try again. But once that money amount was gone that was it. Not one cent more. We all have our personal demons. Some are just more destructive than others. I would rather purchase an item so at least I had something to show for the effort, or just save the money.

As far as sports betting is concerned you can figure out the target audience by the ad spokesmen. You can be certain that these gambling apps are going to face tobacco company-like lawsuits in the future with charges of targeting a vulnerable class of people.

Gambling is insidious. You can tell if your spouse is on drugs or alcohol, not so gambling. Went through inheritance plus a power of attorney (I was on travel alot was the reason) so paid house was mortgaged without my knowledge. We did get help through gamblers anonymous and managed to make it but with less resources than we should have now. it’s ugly and it costs society much more than any money the state takes in.

I did have a great time at the casino where we went. The boss of the casino, a beautiful Indian girl, let me watch while a repair man fixed one of the machines. I'm a mechanic by trade so she was sympathetic to my curiosity and had the guards let me stay. Later I got to meet the tribal chief on a smoke break which was cool. He was a super nice guy. We got a cup full of quarters and an empty cup. We fed the machines from the full cup and the winnings went into the empty cup. When the 1st cup was empty, we were done. Came out ahead by a little.

My wife and I returned to watching baseball games in the evening a couple of years ago. We watch a lot of the Yes Network. The thing that struck me, much more last year than this, were the number of gambling commercials. There should be a law that forbids having ads for gambling and drinking while kids are sure to be watching . It really sickens me how much emphasis is placed on gambling nowadays. I can remember when alcohol ads were banned. While I'm at it, ban all the ads for medications. I don't care if your cootchy will smell better if you take skyrizzy.

Great article. I live in Kentucky where all vices (tobacco, bourbon, horse race wagering) are glorified as cash cows. The only legal online gambling opportunities in KY are pari-mutuel advance deposit wagering platforms such as TVG, Twin Spires and the KY Lottery, which sells draw and instant game tickets online. You can use your debit or credit cards to purchase instant game scratch-off tickets. Online casino gaming is not legal in the Blue Grass State. Of course 'all revenue generated goes to fund KY education.' /s off Since the legal gambling age here is 18 when signing up with a KY sportsbook you 'need to verify that you are old enough to place wagers.' I'm a working man and I don't throw away my hard-earned money.

In George Orwell’s dystopian novel “1984,” he portrays English society – renamed Oceania – as a futuristic version of the 1940s Soviet Union. In this invented society that Orwell calls IngSoc – English Socialism – the populace has even less freedom than the Soviets permitted its citizens and life consists only of drudgery, loneliness and hideousness. The novel grips the reader with fear and loathing of a totalitarian future enabled by technological advances and prompts one with the question: “Can it, will it happen here?” It goes without saying that the United States in 2023 bears little resemblance to 1984 Oceania.

According to the Los Angeles Times, one of the laws Newsom signed, S.B. 2, came in response to the Supreme Court’s New York State Rifle & Pistol Assn. vs. Bruen ruling last year, which struck down a gun control law in New York. The new law “seriously limits who can obtain a license to carry a concealed firearm” and details more than two dozen “sensitive” locations where guns cannot be carried. This includes child care centers, public transit, museums, zoos, medical facilities, among many others.

Fast forward four years: a civil war within the Donbas region turned into a European war raging on Ukrainian territory, destroying the country’s infrastructure, killing hundreds of thousands of its citizens, and creating millions of refugees. Government corruption is an all-time high, and the country is in a state of material poverty. A Manhattan judge on Tuesday found Donald Trump committed fraud for years by exaggerating the value of his wealth – clearing the way for a civil trial where the former president could be ordered to pay $250 million and banned from doing business in the Empire State. Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron found Trump, 77, his family and his business, the Trump Organization, liable for fraud – the key claim in New York Attorney General Letitia James’ sprawling lawsuit against the defendants. Two weeks ago, I had breakfast with George Zimmerman — yes, that George Zimmerman, the Florida man whose life was ruined by a national media eager, as always, to highlight the killing of a black person by a white man. Within a week or two of Trayvon Martin's death, the media had transformed the innocent, Hispanic, Obama-supporting civil rights activist Zimmerman into the poster child for white nationalism. In my 2013 book, "If I Had a Son": Race, Guns, and the Railroading of George Zimmerman, I document all the editing tricks Big Media — NBC, ABC, CNN, the New York Times — used to pull off this evil alchemy.

America has been in a veritable cultural revolution since the 1960s. Nearly all our major institutions finally became woke—the administrative state, traditional and social media, universities, K-12, the corporate boardroom, entertainment, professional sports, and the foundations. So the Obama and the Biden administrations finally seemed to have achieved their aims, in what the Obamas once boasted would be the “fundamental transformation” of America into something unrecognizable by its Founders. But what they gave us was nihilism—the destruction of norms, laws, and customs. There is no border, no criminal justice system, no real president any more.
