Kaleo Manuel, the now-"redeployed" Hawaiian state water commissioner who delayed the release of water for five hours to Lahaina's firefighters as the town burned, is no ordinary bureaucrat.
He's got "supporters."
Here's a buried-news picture-story from the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, showing about 30 "supporters" gathered around him, showering him with about 15 leis, which went up to his chin as he grinned happily. There were hula dances, and from a hula master who teaches at the Univerity of Hawaii at Manoa, no less. There were a couple of older people wearing "808 Cleanups" t-shirts,

These people are just...damn, I can't even find the words to describe this disgraceful act in the wake of all those who died. No shame, not even an iota of remorse, apparently, for the inaction of this man that may have caused so many deaths. I hope they all rot in hell.

He is culpable in the deaths of hundreds of people and should be charged with, if not premeditate murder, at the very least negligent homicide!

Earlier articles quoted him as caring more for water resources than for people. And yet the native Hawaiians just love him. It must be his connection to the sainted Obama. FTA: What kind of bureaucrat has "supporters"? Politicians have supporters, but bureaucrats? And why are they stepping up to the plate now, particularly with news coming out that he delayed the release of water to save Lahaina. A bureaucrat with supporters. As Yogi Berra commented when hearing that a Jew had been elected mayor of Dublin: "Only in America."

I think Hawaii has become Democrat Fan Club HQ. When was the last time they had a Republican Senator, or Representative, or Governor? 'Nuff said.

Progressive ideologues do not care about people, they care about causes. And that particularly goes for people the progressives claim to champion. The Pa'i Foundation, featured in this column, states its mission, To preserve and perpetuate Native Hawaiian arts and cultural traditions for future generations, for example. Very nice. Very anodyne.
Yet Ms Showalter writes, Lahaina, the royal Hawaiian city, by the way, was loaded with Native Hawaiians who died in the flames. Burned beyond recognition, drowned, or missing still.
But no matter. The progressive here throw leis and dance. No introspection, no somber reflection, no hint of re-ordering priorities.
Someday, I pray, people will learn, before they die for someone else's "mission," that these people do. not. care.

Just a guess on my part but I suspect in a few years he’ll be a multi-millionaire courtesy of the developers who wanted to get their hands on the land around Lahaina. Burning out the natives…interesting concept.

I would not want to be burned to death so I feel for the dead on Maui. However, read the comments on articles posted onYahoo News (I know) about Maui, the fire, recovery efforts, etc and there's lot of stay away you white colonizers, this is our land, etc. Fine - I'll keep my donations from helping you being a white colonizer. Visited back in 2009 mainly to visit Arizona Memorial - and never had any desire to go back to a place where the "locals" are so hostile to their fellow US citizens. Sorry Will Cain - you go back to Maui and help.

The true story is found in the comments section under the article. The native islanders hate the whites and Asians who live there and want to secede from the USA but are outnumbered. They refer to them as the "haole" which is equivalent to the "N" word - native racism played a big part in this (and how Kaleo is being feted) even though many natives died in Lahaina. Got to break a few eggs in a revolution doncha know...

The water official has paid fans to follow him around. Dictators and tyrants do that sort of thing. They think it works and they might be right. Sheep are sheep after all.

That would be Obama’s people, Oprah’s people, and Bezos people. It was a big thank you for getting rid of the peons so they can transform
Maui into their own private paradise without having to see the poor and the have nots.

Isn't it amazing that "they" are never held accountable, just reassigned. No questions to be answered, no consequences, just an "oh well, nothing to see here, just move along". A quote from his bio "Evolving from a land use focus, over the past 10 years, Kaleo has focused on bringing planning and indigenous knowledge to the fields of water advocacy and management in Hawai‘i. Kaleo is one of 200 inaugural Obama Leaders representing the Asia-Pacific region with the Obama Foundation" says it all to me. No doubt that his degree in Hawaiian studies qualified him for the job . . . or was it just the boxes that he punched?

I have borderline sympathy. You voted for this Hawaii. Elections have consequences.

Exhibit A in Hawaiian racism: Kamehameha Schools, which - although private - restrict admission to descendents of native Hawaiians. The locals like to boast that everyone in Hawaii is a minority. True, but they don't like each other any more than the rest of the country.
