Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc.’s stock tumbled 22% Tuesday, after the retailer’s second-quarter profit missed consensus by a wide margin, while sales also fell short., and the company squarely blamed theft for its woes.
It was the company’s first earnings miss in three years. The last time Dick’s missed profit and sales consensus was in April of 2020, when it was reporting first-quarter earnings for that year.
“While we posted another double-digit EBT margin, our Q2 profitability was short of our expectations due in large part to the impact of elevated inventory shrink, an increasingly serious issue impacting many retailers,” said CEO Lauren Hobart in a statement.

We went to a mall yesterday to do our mall walking because it was too hot to exercise outside, anyway went past this dismond outlet store and they had a Nashville PD officer just standing by the front door. I guess this is to discourage any organize mob theft.

Dick's Sporting Good being in business, or being out of business, makes no difference to me. I stopped shopping there once they stopped carrying guns "to make America safer".

It would not surprise me to learn that the businesses who benefit the greatest from mail order sales are behind the flash mob thefts and hundreds of other store thefts. There is a certain class of people who could not possibly dream of taking something that didn't belong to them or their willingness to pay for it. That generation is approaching their 80's and 90's. Anything younger than 60 or 70 is of the Welfare Generation whence Our Father Who Art in Washington cuddles and cares for one's every wish. Uncle Sam, as we knew him, just packed up and slipped out the door when the new guy came in. Who izzat? Hi, my name is Jimmy, I'll Take All You Gimme!

Just think of how much theft is being done to impact a retailer's bottom line.
Other retailers have reported significant theft too.
How much has this eroded civil society where people feel less concern for other people's property, life or simply following the rule of law?
Is it too much of a stretch to believe it would be too difficult to find people who would not see any problem with impacting an election, for instance?

Until these woke CEOs quit pussy-footing around by calling blatant theft “inventory shrinkage” they’ll continue to suffer. I guess calling a thief a thief is cruel.

I have not set foot in a Dick's Sporting Goods since their anti gun flip some years ago. I will not do business with my enemy if I dont have to.
Turns out I dont have to. We have a Dunham's sports store about 30 miles from here that sells everything Dick's sold, and at better prices. They also sell all sorts of guns and had plenty of ammunition, often on sale, during the Obama shortages. When I shop there I dont feel like I've betrayed my country.

She can blame it on shrinkage, aka, shoplifting, but it is also a very poorly run company. I live in an affluent area where, thankfully, crime and shoplifting are not huge issues. Whenever I take my son to Dick's to buy new tennis shoes (b/c he's growing like a weed), they never have his size in stock and they are poorly staffed -- and the staff that are there are not very helpful. They end up having to order the shoes and have them shipped directly to our house. Customer service is non-existent. I'd much rather shop at a helpful, well-run, customer-oriented business but they are dinosaurs, so I mainly buy most things online these days.

They dumped guns and other hunting, shooting sports equipment, now are primarily selling shoes. The biggest market for expensive shoes has a huge overlap for the largest demographic for shoplifters.
Sucks to choose a political-based business model that drives away paying customers and attracts thieves.

#20 is certain to be correct. The last time I was at the local mall, Dick's having long since dispensed with the long guns and the ammo, most of what was visible from the outside hall was premium footwear. I am unaware of what Air Jordans cost these days. People have actually been murdered for fancy shoes of various descriptions. Sometimes the killer just leaves the decedent on the sidewalk, two dimensional in his sock feet, supine, shot, and shoeless. Not the nicest way to go. Six decades ago in Nashville at Utopia Shoe Store I used to get tennis, basketball, and golf shoes very cheaply. Before going rafting on a North Carolina river, I needed something cheap to protect my feet against rocks. New pair of tennis shoes: $2. Try that today.

Walmart and probably most of these stores have good camera systems. They should give the police and prosecutors the tapes. And if nothing positive is done with the tapes, i.e. arrest and prosecute the thieves, then run TV ads against the police, prosecutors and judges via showing the tapes.

Organized theft is quickly killing traditional retail business. In some very blue areas businesses either are leaving or have left. Lock up criminals of prepare for more store invasions, and for more stock "walking" out the front door. And it's not just outsiders--insiders steal, too.
