PHILADELPHIA—Right-hander Cristian Javier and three Houston Astros relievers on Wednesday night combined to throw the second no-hitter in World Series history, 66 years after Don Larsen’s perfect game for the New York Yankees. In Game 4 against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, Javier, a 25-year-old native of the Dominican Republic making his first World Series start, allowed two baserunners across six innings, both on walks. At 97 pitches and with still three innings to navigate, Javier gave way to the Astros’ bullpen, a decision made by Astros manager Dusty Baker. In his perfect game against the Brooklyn Dodgers, Larsen also threw 97 pitches—in nine innings.

President Joe Biden uttered the word “democracy” 37 times in a 20-minute speech on Wednesday that seemed to be his final pitch to American voters to vote for Democrats in next week’s midterm elections. Biden’s speech cautioned against letting Republicans take power after the midterm election, arguing that the “very soul of America itself” is on the line. Biden’s speech came amid projections from analysts who expect Republicans to regain the majority in the House and U.S. Senate. Additionally, Democrats are playing defense in several districts Biden carried by significant margins in 2020. Donald Trump may have owned “You’re Fired!” but Elon Musk is teaching America what it means. The GOP should pay attention. Musk’s greatest undertaking as the new “Chief Twit” involves deploying new business models that enhance corporate value, but his most visible challenge is changing the culture of this large organization without interrupting its business. That’s a notoriously difficult task. It’s a task at which President Trump failed. Trump often complained about the politicization and corruption of federal agencies – comprised largely of his own executive branch employees – but he had zero perceptible impact on the culture of the federal bureaucracy. When your whole city’s a toilet, why not embrace it? The D.C. Council is expected to take the first of two votes Tuesday on a massive rewrite of its criminal code. If passed, the bill would eliminate most mandatory minimum sentences, allow for jury trials in almost all misdemeanor cases and reduce the maximum penalties for offenses such as burglaries, carjackings and robberies. Assume that there’ll be a lot more burglaries, carjackings and robberies. Not to mention public urination. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Police Chief Robert Contee III are pushing back hard on parts of the plan they don’t agree with, and say the council is rushing to beat an arbitrary deadline.

Democracy is under threat — the wrong candidates could win more votes than their opponents in hotly contested free and fair elections. That’s the worry of progressives insisting “Democracy is on the ballot” in the midterms. This trope, repeated endlessly on the center-left, is offered as a reason voters of conscience should cast aside their other concerns and vote Democrat up and down the ballot. If this argument seems a touch self-serving — indeed functionally indistinguishable from run-of-the-mill partisan salesmanship — it’s because it is. As it happens, there is nothing in the actual behavior of Democrats to suggest that they take their own rhetoric seriously

The ballot initiative would decriminalize psychedelic plants and fungi, including DMT and psilocybin mushrooms, also known as “magic mushrooms.” Among voters of all political affiliations, 43% said they would support the measure, while 44.2% said they would oppose it.
