Hurricane Ian rapidly intensified Monday as it barreled toward Florida, threatening dangerous storm surges in places not used to getting hit directly by a hurricane. Florida could start feeling Ian’s wrath as early as Tuesday, with hurricane conditions potentially hitting the state Wednesday. Evacuation orders were issued Monday for some military personnel and residents, as Ian whipped 80-mph winds and churned northwest about 100 miles west of Grand Cayman, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said. “Rapid strengthening is expected during the next day or so, and Ian is forecast to become a major hurricane (Monday night) or early Tuesday when

Ah. "Unprecedented." Prepare to hear that the hurricane was caused when Donald Trump pulled out of the Paris Accords.

For the past 25 years, every dang storm that enters the gulf is supposed to be the storm that ends all storms. At some point they will cry 'storm!' one too many times and no one will listen anymore.

So was the last one and the one before that. The anchors and networks are doing rain dances, hoping its devastating. Take whatever precautions you need to and disregard the media crap.

Governor DeSantis will have relief supplies and power repair trucks prepositioned in the next day or so, ready to roll in ASAP to resolve any impacts. He could use Florida’s extensive budget surplus regardless if Biden botches FEMA response (intentionally or unintentionally). Of course, Gov DeSantis efforts will go unnoticed by the media as they will never acknowledge effective leaders.

I live in Jacksonville Beach. Frankly, I'm disgusted with the Weather Channel. They have been doing everything but throwing confetti that they have a hurricane to talk about. It's pretty repulsivvd!

“Unprecedented”? Maybe. I was 27 when Camille hit the Gulf Coast wiping out several little towns like Pass Christian. Lots more expensive real estate to damage now, of course. A big hurricane is a ratings boost for the Weather Channel and the nets. They will be in tears if Ian fizzles out.

Ah, the Weather Channel.
No need to watch their “forecast” of where the storm will hit. Just look where Jim Cantore and Stephanie Abrams report from. They get the primo devastation spots to maximize their air time.

Another statement in the psywar to instill fear in people’s minds because this is direct evidence of man made climate change which is real deadly and must be dealt with right away. After all when it’s something we have never seen in it lifetime means it’s something that hasn’t happened for about 80 years. So this is an urgent crisis. A climate emergency ladies and gentlemen! All gas cars off the road!!! Until further notice!!!

Re #10, we drove across the gulf coast, hauling our formula race car to Daytona, a month after Camille had hit. Had never seen anything like that. For miles and miles and miles and miles. Utter devastation. Nothing for miles in from the coast but large and small boats that had washed ashore and been borne for unbelievable distances. Entry rails for what had been swimming pools sticking out of the flat bare earth. Clothes in trees. Piles of corrugated metal everywhere. It was surreal. And it went on for such a long, long distance. I still remember those names. Pass Christian, Bay St. Louis...

Waiting for the left to mention “karma” for DeSantis for “kidnapping” all those innocent people and shipping them off to Martha’s Vineyard. I don’t believe anything I hear anymore until I see it with my own eyes.

I agree with the posters who say the media is excited about some possible upcoming death and/or destruction with this storm. You can even hear it in their voices on the radio. Sickening is the word for these ghouls.

Maybe it will be so bad to where it will creep all the way up to Atlanta and wipe the weather channel of the air.forever.

I hate when weather people do this. My friend in Tampa is terrified. She said the weatherman is all excited and scared. Yeah, I've been through hurricanes but I never saw anyone on TV try to scare people already concerned about the storm. The media has waited for this for a long time. They don't want to waste a minute of scare tactics on the public. Disgusting.

Regardless of all the hype and hysteria, the ghoulish anticipation of weathermen, Tampa Bay during high tide - on the east, punching side of the eye - does not look like the place to be starting Wed afternoon. There is going to be beaucoup water being shoved into that bay and over the land there if the storm track holds. Beaucoup.
I'm sure we have plenty of posters in that area, including one Hazymac. Be safe.

@25 in August 2004 I lived near Port Charlotte, FL. Hurricane Charlie was headed up the Gulf straight on toward Tampa. Reports came of the severe flooding and loss of lives that would be experienced in Tampa. Hurricane stalled, eye broke down and it made a right turn up the Peace River seven miles south of me. I later saw articles saying some kind of foam the weather people use to alter the weather had washed up on beaches. I sincerely believe Hurricane Charlie was messed with to save Tampa

2d post.
Problem: A catastrophe (including flooding and power outages) caused by climate change.
Solution: evacuate hundreds of miles in your new EV.

Sorry for the second post and reply to #16 but I was also racing sports cars in those years. Loved it, some of the best years of my life. Then I got married in1970 and acquired a wife and two little stepdaughters. Sold the race car because, well, they were depending on me to not get killed. Things change. We were probably contemporaries it those days...Daytona, VIR, Savannah-Effingham etc. Good times.

Thanks, Hugh. We're in Evacuation Zone A, and plans are to check into a hotel tomorrow twenty miles north for two nights, then, we hope, come back home Saturday morning and see what's left. If the storm hits south of Tampa Bay, that would be good for those of us to the north. The one thing you don't want is for a hurricane to go barely north or left of you. The right side of the storm is the dangerous side. It's the semi-tropics. We have to deal with hurricanes from time to time. Mainly, get out of their way.
