Staffers at the New York Times are openly discussing the possibility of a work stoppage as talks with management have reportedly hit an impasse over the union’s demands for a salary hike. The guild representing journalists at the newspaper also wants management to commit to an 8% annual salary increase year-over-year for a period of four years. But management has countered with a significantly smaller hike — a 4% increase for the first year followed by a 2% boost for the following two years, according to Insider.

Hopefully they strike indefinitely forcing the NY Times into bankruptcy and out of business. Unions have a history of doing stuff like that.

But wouldn’t a work stoppage be a stoppage of them saving the planet? Don’t they care about the planet? Right now it’s the only one we have, ya know.

Normally, I don't favor strikes. But I sure hope this is a long one. Maybe we can find some of those old union enforcers to rough up the scabs. Nah, that wouldn't work. Those guys gotta be in their 80s now and would only be able to shove them with their walkers.

Apparently these NYT employees don't know that employment is not an entitlement. If you don't like your employer, the quickest, most expedient, most effective remedy is to find another employer.

California is committing to a plan that will make it the first U.S. state to phase out gas-fueled furnaces and water heaters in homes, a move environmentalists are betting will provide a template for other states. The Golden State will ban the sale of all new natural gas-fired space heaters and water-heating appliances by 2030, under a proposal unanimously approved by the California Air Resources Board on Thursday. “We need to take every action we can to deliver on our commitments to protect public health from the adverse impacts of air pollution, and this strategy identifies how we can do just that,” board Chair Liane Randolph said.

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was admitted to a hospital in Baltimore on Tuesday “for treatment of a possible infection,” the court said in a statement. “She underwent an endoscopic procedure at Johns Hopkins this afternoon to clean out a bile duct stent that was placed last August," the statement said. "The justice is resting comfortably and will stay in the hospital for a few days to receive intravenous antibiotic treatment.” The statement said Ginsburg was initially evaluated at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. on Monday night after experiencing fever and chills.

At the final debate of the Democratic presidential primary on Sunday, Senator Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden clashed on the coronavirus. Sanders contended the pandemic laid bare “the incredible weakness and dysfunctionality” of the US healthcare system, and called for single-payer reform. Biden countered that Italy’s universal system had failed to protect the Mediterranean nation, and asserted that Covid-19 “has nothing to do with Bernie’s Medicare for All”. At first glance, the ex-vice-president seems right: of course single-payer can’t close the door to a novel virus, any more than it can forestall a deadly earthquake or fend off a zombie apocalypse. Nonetheless, a national health program with unified financing

Since my foray into politics, I have come to understand that our system comprises insiders and outsiders and that Donald Trump was the consummate outsider. He was opposed by the system on both sides of the political aisle. Admittedly, I counted myself amongst the opposition. It was only when faced with a choice of yet another Clinton, whom we were told held a 95% chance of victory, that I felt a throw-away vote for Trump was in order. To my surprise, the b@st@rd actually won. He wasn’t supposed to win.

If Democrats could pull off an upset in Utah, it would have profound consequences for the control of the Senate — and the rest of the country. Republican senators are growing concerned by colleague Mitt Romney’s refusal to help fellow Utah Republican Mike Lee decisively win his re-election campaign — a posture that could potentially keep their party from gaining a majority in the November elections. Unlike every other Republican senator, the 2012 failed Republican presidential candidate is declining to express a preference in Republican Lee’s re-election effort against Democrat-endorsed Evan McMullin.

President Biden once again shirked any responsibility for skyrocketing gas prices and instead demanded that gas stations cut prices at the pump for drivers despite their costs to stay in business being dictated by the market. [Video] His flawed economic reasoning is that oil prices are dropping. Oil prices are not the only factor in the price of a gallon of gasoline. Taxation and crushing regulation as well as progressive policies have a lot to do with it. It’s almost as if Biden and the left want to drive gas stations out of business. In a meeting with economic aides on Monday, Biden excoriated gas stations,

Large swaths of Florida’s heavily populated Gulf Coast have been ordered evacuated. (snip) It is fortunate that as of the current moment, electric vehicles constitute only about 100,000, out of nearly 8 million vehicles registered to drive on Florida’s roads. What if they all were electric? (snip) cars from southern Florida would start running out of juice after 100 – 250 miles. They would then have to spend hours at recharging stations, which would rapidly be clogged with other cars and trucks waiting their turn (snip) Cars waiting to be charged would spill onto the highways (snip) Those cars that ran out of juice on the highway would block traffic.

President Joe Biden warned oil executives on Wednesday not to use Hurricane Ian as an excuse to raise oil prices, illustrating how important the issue is ahead of the midterm elections. The president issued the dire warning, even repeating himself, during opening remarks at the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health. “I want to add one more warning. That’s warning to the oil and gas industry executives. Do not, let me repeat, do not! Do not use this as an excuse to raise gasoline prices or gouge the American people,” Biden said during a briefing on Hurricane Ian preparations. “The price of oil has stayed relatively low.

Sen. Joe Manchin’s humiliation was brought to completion on Tuesday after his Democrat-negotiated permitting reform deal officially fell through. Per RedState’s previous reporting, Manchin stabbed Republicans in the back during the summer, waiting until the CHIPS Act passed before doing an about-face on a big-spending reconciliation bill full of “climate change” payoffs. The West Virginia senator had supposedly struck a deal whereby he would pass the falsely named Inflation Reduction Act in exchange for Democrat support for permitting reform for oil and gas projects.

Northwestern Medicine looked at 70 female-body patients between the ages of 13 and 24 who either received “top surgery,” or mastectomies (36 patients), or who received testosterone therapy but didn’t get mastectomies (34 patients). Researchers had patients report about their body image before they began their treatment path and then three months later. The study found that “gender-affirming top surgery is associated with significant improvement in chest dysphoria, gender congruence and body image in transmasculine and nonbinary teens and young adults,” according to a press release
