California Moves to Ban Natural Gas Furnaces

California is committing to a plan that will make it the first US state to phase out gas-fueled furnaces and water heaters in homes, a move environmentalists are betting will provide a template for other states. The Golden State will ban the sale of all new natural gas-fired space heaters and water heating appliances by 2030, under a proposal unanimously approved by the California Air Resources Board on Thursday. “We’re really hopeful that this is the beginning of a domino effect and other states will follow California’s lead,” said Leah Louis-Prescott, a senior associate at RMI , a non-profit focused

Comments:

Most CA residents don't have the heating needs as other states, but this is still crazy. Note that they expect other states to fall in line.

THE most efficient and cleanest kind of heating system, and he fuel delivery cost and energy use is also the lowest, by pipeline. So, they ban it.

Members of the KARB aren't elected so why do they continually feel a need to cater to an ignorant electorate? I live in SoCal, and while it's not the Northeast there is still a need for home heating in the winter months. Head further north and/or inland and you may as well be in the mountains of Colorado. And given that most in the region uses propane or natural gas, a couple more yottawatts will have to be pulled from the grid to heat all those homes with all those EV's already charging in the garages. Oh, and winter is also the rainy season, so that leaves just the wind (or Arizona) to power everything. Utopia, for sure.

Energy companies should just shut down all the gas stations in Kalifornia, and stop delivery of all aircraft fuel, to help the environment, of course! No state should sell Kalifornia any electricity that's generated by fossil fuel, again in the interest of saving the environment.

So they are banning the sale of gas water heaters? Not just new home installations? That'll work well as probably most homes in CA that have gas service heat water with gas. So now as these units wear out, they will have to replace them with electric? Virtually none of these homes will already have a 240v 30 amp circuit drop at the WH location. This will probably double the replacement cost, then double the operating costs (assuming the state can keep the power on).

Rash, ideologically-driven changes without verifying first (a) that each change is even possible to perform, (b) that they will be even minimally effective (I bet the changes will make the problems worse), or (c) that the changes are feasibly sustainable. FWIW, while O.P.'s point has a grain of truth, many people here need at least a little heating on most days, as so many mornings start somewhere in the 50s (and that's a little too chilly for most people). Adding this to the recent order to stop selling gas-powered cars could multiply the size of the exodus from this place.

California has some of the best weather, scenery, and architecture of any state in my beloved country. That's when it was run by Pete Wilson and still had some semblance of sanity. California finds itself on edge more than ever with a lingering fear: the threat of rolling blackouts for years to come. Despite new power plants, building huge battery storage systems and restarting some shuttered fossil fuel generators over the past couple of years, California relies heavily on energy from other states — the cavalry rushing over a distant hill. Sometimes the support does not show up when expected or at all. That was the case this month, when millions of residents got cellphone alerts urging them to cut their energy use as the state teetered close to blackouts in blazing heat.

New England is approaching what grid officials and utility executives expect to be a very pricey winter for energy consumers and one that risks a shortage of energy during extended periods of extreme cold. It's not an unfamiliar forecast for the region, where cold temperatures and natural gas pipeline constraints have a record of driving supply tightness, and thereby driving prices up, during cold winter months. But this year, those pipeline constraints are overlaid by extremely competitive energy markets globally and fuel commodity prices that are already higher than normal going into winter. That's led to warnings that $1,000 monthly
