A city panel recommended Friday that Chicago permanently remove its three Christopher Columbus statues and the Balbo Monument in Burnham Park, and consider altering or removing nearly 40 other monuments.
It is not clear if the city will follow the recommendations of the report by the Chicago monuments project advisory committee. In May, Mayor Lori Lightfoot hinted strongly at ignoring them.(Snip)The goal is to “memorialize events, people or groups that historically have been excluded or underrepresented,” the report states. “This is a crucial step in telling the true and complete history of Chicago and all its people.”(Snip)Three artworks need added context to “acknowledge the challenging legacies

Bulla Hagar, Kenya—The United States is stepping up to buy about 150,000 metric tons of grain from Ukraine in the next few weeks for an upcoming shipment of food aid from ports no longer blockaded by war, the World Food Program chief has told The Associated Press.
The final destinations for the grain are not confirmed and discussions continue, David Beasley said. But the planned shipment, one of several the U.N. agency that fights hunger is pursuing, is more than six times the amount of grain that the first WFP-arranged ship from Ukraine is now carrying toward people in the Horn of Africa at risk of starvation.

A new retail and e-commerce report finds inflation is affecting the shopping habits of 85% of Americans, leading most to reduce their purchases and feel unhappier buying online. In the report published Thursday, Morning Consult found that 77% of Americans are shopping less to save money. Only 41% said they enjoyed online shopping in June, down from 50% in March. The report warns against blaming supply-chain issues for the trend. It notes that Americans, especially the millennials who make up most online shoppers, have less money to spend as consumer prices rise.(Snip)Many shoppers also are coping with inflation by looking for discounts and shopping at discount stores,

A whopping 4.9 million illegal immigrants have crossed our border since Biden has taken office, a report from the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) found. The president of FAIR Dan Stein discussed the report, stating that “Roughly the equivalent of the entire population of Ireland has illegally entered the United States in the 18 months President Biden has been in office, with many being released into American communities.” He continued, saying “In that time, the Biden administration has blamed an unprecedented surge of illegal immigration on all sorts of external factors, except their own sabotage of our nation’s immigration laws.”(Snip)With 199,976 illegal immigrants entering in July,

As the world continues its fight against COVID-19 and the ever-spreading monkeypox virus, it seems as though there’s another illness gaining a foothold. “Tomato flu” was first identified in India on May 6 and has so far infected 82 children, who are all under the age of 5, according to a study by the Lancet Respiratory Medicine Journal. A further 26 kids up to the age of 10 are suspected of having cases of tomato flu. Aptly named for the red blisters that appear on the skin, the new virus comes armed with fever and joint pain.(Snip)“Given the similarities to hand, foot and mouth disease,

Alec Baldwin says the death of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins has cost him acting jobs and taken “years” off his life due to stress. The 64-year-old actor fatally shot Hutchins and wounded director Joel Souza on the Rust set on 21 October, after assistant director David Halls allegedly handed him a prop gun that turned out to be loaded with live ammunition. In a new interview with CNN, Baldwin said he’d lost out on five jobs due to the fallout from the shooting, which he denies responsibility for. “I got fired from another job yesterday,” he said. “There I was all set to go to a movie,

An off-campus co-op for students at the University of California, Berkeley named the 'Person of Color Theme House' has banned white guests from entering common areas of the house. After a yearlong effort by students, the South Orange Maplewood Board of Education voted earlier this summer to rename Jefferson Elementary School to Delia Bolden Elementary School. This is one border barrier President Biden doesn’t seem to mind spending extra time and money on. The under-construction security fence around the commander-in-chief’s beach house, thought to be scheduled for completion late last year, actually won’t be done until the spring of 2023—while the cost to taxpayers has ballooned by nearly $35,000. The Department of Homeland Security initially doled out $456,548 in September 2021 to Delaware-based construction company Turnstone Holdings LLC for the purchase and installation of security fencing at Biden’s Rehoboth Beach home, according to USAspending.gov, an online database tracking federal outlays. The same site records that on Nov. 30, 2021, another $6,844

Walls and fences don't work, they say, and yet they build and spend on some but not others. Walls topped with razor wire and with guard towers along the perimeter seem to work pretty well.
