Federal prosecutors have brought charges against a family they say conspired to smuggle a 10-year-old illegal immigrant girl into the country and then put her through a living hell in which she was raped repeatedly, stabbed with a kitchen knife and subjected to regular beatings. The case is one of the more horrific examples of immigrants abusing the “family loophole” in border policy, with an overwhelmed federal government assisting in the abuse. In this instance, that meant accepting the word of the illegal immigrant family that they were related to two Guatemalan girls. The government approved the family as sponsors and delivered the girls to situations that turned

Rep. Dan Crenshaw on Sunday criticized fellow Republicans who continue to call for the FBI to be defunded over its search of former President Donald Trump’s private home. Mr. Crenshaw, Texas Republican, has emerged as a leading critic of those like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Georgia Republican, who advocate to “defund the FBI”—a position he compared to far-left Democrats’ calls to “defund the police.” “It’s crazy, and it makes us seem like extremist Democrats,” he told CNN’s “State of the Union.” “Marjorie and [Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, New York Democrat] can go join the ‘defund the law enforcement’ club if they want; 99% of Republicans are not

Firefighters in Seattle have demanded the city take action after they were subjected to more than 40 violent attacks in the past four months—a string of assaults that have been largely carried out by the city's homeless population. The attacks, which the city’s firefighter’s union says began in May, have seen the protectors repeatedly targeted by the intemperate down-and-outs, often while responding to fires started at the city's growing number of homeless encampments. One such incident, which transpired last month, saw one fire official pelted with a rock while attempting to put out a blaze that originated from an encampment fire. Another altercation, in June, saw firefighters chased

Hundreds of migrants—at least some bussed to the Big Apple by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott—lined up outside Lincoln Hospital in The Bronx on Sunday to get healthcare coverage, food and other items including school supplies and free phones. The event, organized by the city hospital system, was billed as a “resource and family fun day” for the migrants and their children, many of whom have come to New York City in droves in recent weeks. “I came to New York about three days ago. I am a welder, and I am looking for work here,” Venezuelan refugee Adrian Medina, 32, said through a translator.

A city panel recommended Friday that Chicago permanently remove its three Christopher Columbus statues and the Balbo Monument in Burnham Park, and consider altering or removing nearly 40 other monuments.
It is not clear if the city will follow the recommendations of the report by the Chicago monuments project advisory committee. In May, Mayor Lori Lightfoot hinted strongly at ignoring them.(Snip)The goal is to “memorialize events, people or groups that historically have been excluded or underrepresented,” the report states. “This is a crucial step in telling the true and complete history of Chicago and all its people.”(Snip)Three artworks need added context to “acknowledge the challenging legacies

Bulla Hagar, Kenya—The United States is stepping up to buy about 150,000 metric tons of grain from Ukraine in the next few weeks for an upcoming shipment of food aid from ports no longer blockaded by war, the World Food Program chief has told The Associated Press.
The final destinations for the grain are not confirmed and discussions continue, David Beasley said. But the planned shipment, one of several the U.N. agency that fights hunger is pursuing, is more than six times the amount of grain that the first WFP-arranged ship from Ukraine is now carrying toward people in the Horn of Africa at risk of starvation.

A new retail and e-commerce report finds inflation is affecting the shopping habits of 85% of Americans, leading most to reduce their purchases and feel unhappier buying online. In the report published Thursday, Morning Consult found that 77% of Americans are shopping less to save money. Only 41% said they enjoyed online shopping in June, down from 50% in March. The report warns against blaming supply-chain issues for the trend. It notes that Americans, especially the millennials who make up most online shoppers, have less money to spend as consumer prices rise.(Snip)Many shoppers also are coping with inflation by looking for discounts and shopping at discount stores,

A whopping 4.9 million illegal immigrants have crossed our border since Biden has taken office, a report from the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) found. The president of FAIR Dan Stein discussed the report, stating that “Roughly the equivalent of the entire population of Ireland has illegally entered the United States in the 18 months President Biden has been in office, with many being released into American communities.” He continued, saying “In that time, the Biden administration has blamed an unprecedented surge of illegal immigration on all sorts of external factors, except their own sabotage of our nation’s immigration laws.”(Snip)With 199,976 illegal immigrants entering in July,

As the world continues its fight against COVID-19 and the ever-spreading monkeypox virus, it seems as though there’s another illness gaining a foothold. “Tomato flu” was first identified in India on May 6 and has so far infected 82 children, who are all under the age of 5, according to a study by the Lancet Respiratory Medicine Journal. A further 26 kids up to the age of 10 are suspected of having cases of tomato flu. Aptly named for the red blisters that appear on the skin, the new virus comes armed with fever and joint pain.(Snip)“Given the similarities to hand, foot and mouth disease,

Alec Baldwin says the death of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins has cost him acting jobs and taken “years” off his life due to stress. The 64-year-old actor fatally shot Hutchins and wounded director Joel Souza on the Rust set on 21 October, after assistant director David Halls allegedly handed him a prop gun that turned out to be loaded with live ammunition. In a new interview with CNN, Baldwin said he’d lost out on five jobs due to the fallout from the shooting, which he denies responsibility for. “I got fired from another job yesterday,” he said. “There I was all set to go to a movie,

An off-campus co-op for students at the University of California, Berkeley named the 'Person of Color Theme House' has banned white guests from entering common areas of the house. A list of house rules revealed that occupants were told 'many POC moved here to be able to avoid white violence and presence, so respect their decision of avoidance if you bring white guests.'(Snip)The accommodation, which is located close to Berkeley's campus, is a five-story, 30-room home that can house up to 56 students. After a yearlong effort by students, the South Orange Maplewood Board of Education voted earlier this summer to rename Jefferson Elementary School to Delia Bolden Elementary School. Winne Delia Bolden was the first Black woman to graduate from Columbia High School in 1912. Although not much is known about her life after she graduated, Bolden wrote an insightful essay that she read at her commencement and was published in the 1912 yearbook.(Snip)“I want to make that point that Thomas Jefferson owned over 600 slaves,” Board Member Qawi Telesford said at the board’s June 29 meeting. “He freed two while he was alive and seven after he died,

Aren't we generous? China and Turkey are among the top recipients of the Ukrainian grain, per previous recent reports, and yet opened ports for grain shipments are given as a pretext for why USA is funding Ukraine's war effort and indeed their entire government for the duration. Meanwhile, in an amusing twist, the article says China is contributing nothing to offset "world hunger." Doesn't China want its citizens to suffer crippling inflation the way Americans do?
