West Hollywood votes to defund sheriff’s
department despite soaring crime

Original Article

West Hollywood has voted to slash law enforcement funding, leaving the California city famous for its bustling Sunset Strip nightlife destination with up to five fewer deputies on patrol—despite skyrocketing crime rates in the area. The council passed the budget with a 3-2 vote Monday, with Mayor Lauren Meister and Councilman John Erickson voting against it, reported WeHoville.com. Meanwhile, the West Hollywood City Council approved keeping bars open until 4 a.m. and increased funding for a Russian arts festival. The vote came just three months after the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported that crime in West Hollywood jumped a startling 137 percent in February 2022

Comments:

Smart move. There's no sense in arresting criminals when the courts simply turn them loose. And when being arrested is meaningless, then why have a police force at all?

The notion that defunding the police will somehow improve public safety is like thinking that shooting Smokey The Bear will prevent forest fires. ‘Progressives’ are intellectual troglodytes and an imminent threat to all Americans.

All of those liberal good intentions and positive feelings will surely protect the citizens from the criminals when robberies, shootings, murders, and other crimes are being committed. Maybe the Hollywood crowd (with private security) can do a few PSAs about being safe and why the police need to be defunded as an additional protection for the "little people".

The headline makes it appear that the citizens voted on a referendum to defund police. I doubt the city council members openly ran for office and won on a pledge to reduce police protection.

I really think West Hollywood should get together and actually confirm how they voted on this matter. It's so easy to let people vote - and then count the vote into whatever you want. It was some Communist Tyrant somewhere who spoke to this rather gloatingly. Same with their general elections. Are you REALLY getting what you voted for?

The U.S. announced $820 million in new military aid to Ukraine to help it repel the Russian invasion, including a sophisticated Norwegian anti-aircraft system that is used to protect the White House and Capitol. The latest tranche of arms for Kyiv announced Friday includes sophisticated new surface-to-air missile systems and counter-artillery radar that the Pentagon hopes will limit Russia’s ability to strike Ukrainian cities with long-range missiles. Ukraine will also get up to 150,000 rounds of 155-millimeter ammunition, a key tool as it uses howitzers and other heavy artillery to blunt Russian advances in the Donbas region.

Albany—New York is taking the first step towards enshrining abortion access and LGBTQ rights in the state’s constitution following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Inflation is mostly to blame for Biden’s catastrophic approval rating, of course. But I think what Axelrod describes here is an underrated reason for flagging left-wing support. It’s not (just) that his policies aren’t progressive enough. It’s the sense that he doesn’t “fight,” to borrow a term from righty populists. And when he does make a gesture towards fighting, like when he endorsed creating an exception to the filibuster for abortion rights, he’s destined to end up losing that fight. It doesn’t help either that he’s 79 years old. Watch two minutes of Axelrod here, which picks up with him discussing Biden’s call for a filibuster carve-out.
