House Republicans signaled on Thursday that the exploding crime rate in the District of Columbia might warrant congressional intervention if Mayor Muriel Bowser does not get serious about combating violence. GOP lawmakers on the House Judiciary and Oversight committees say that Ms. Bowser needs to be held accountable for crime spiking by 11% over the past year. “All Americans should feel safe in their capital city, but radical left-wing policies have enabled rampant crime in the District of Columbia,” said Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, the top Republican on the Oversight Committee.(Snip)“For over a year, Republicans have raised concerns about D.C.’s soaring crime and deteriorating conditions

Comments:

Shouldn't a nation's capital reflect its core values? Uncontrolled crime, overt racism against White people, crazy homeless people and crooked politicians doing just as they please, and Gay Pride 24/7, laid out for all to see. The residents of DC certainly like it.

What exactly would fix the problem other than bulldozing Northeast and Southeast DC into the ground and salting it so nothing ever lives there again? Yeah sure, get another black mayor, if you can find one that's not out on drug charges.

In the bad old days of Kansas City political boss Pendergast running everything in the city, very corruptly, eventually the state of Missouri had had enough of the violence, corruption and crime in KC. In the 1930s in KC, lots of voters were arrested by the political machine bosses to specifically keep them from voting. In any case, the state of Missouri took over control of the police department of Kansas City, Missouri. And the did it in St. Louis, too. St. Louis spend decades fighting to get control back...and is now a mess. The KC MO police department is controlled by a board of police commissioners, appointed by the governor. All of them must reside in Kansas City, so control is still pretty much local, just that a local political boss like corrupt Pendergast cannot also control the police. This system works very well, and there is no real cry in KC to change it. Frankly, the city council is the LAST people that should be trusted with the police department control, from our experience. I'd say that perhaps a police commission appointed by Congress MIGHT do a better job than the hopelessly corrupt city officials of DC, too. Worth a try. It has worked well here in Kansas City for about 90 year or so. I don't live in KCMO, but I live in Kansas a few miles over the border, and have to deal with KCMO a lot, and have learned much from living literally 'right next door'.

Those GOP lawmakers on the House Judiciary and Oversight committees might want to pay attention to their own police first. The US Capitol Police have hardly covered themselves in glory, particularly since its performance on January 6th. And while they're at it, those GOP lawmakers on the House Judiciary and Oversight committees could demand the release of those unjustly being held in the DC Jail. I don't hear anything...

Crime up everywhere. The only way to stop bullies is to bloody a few noses. If the police will look the other way when thugs break the law, perhaps they should treat vigilantes the same way.

Not since the decade leading up to the Civil War has there been as much discussion about the possibility of the United States splitting into two or more countries as there has been in the past 10 years. The reality is that this nation has effectively split into two countries which are, for the moment, tenuously living side-by-side. Race or ethnicity has been the underlying foundation in the creation of every nation in the history of mankind except the United States, as its founding was based on the tenet that all men are created equal and are endowed with certain unalienable rights that government cannot abrogate.
