Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) plans to veto tens of millions of dollars that were earmarked for the Tampa Bay Rays after the team released an anti-Second Amendment statement following a couple of recent tragedies. “DeSantis plans to veto a $35 million legislation for a Pasco County facility that’s earmarked for the Tampa Bay Rays’ spring training,” OutKick reported. “DeSantis’s decision is in response to the Rays politicizing recent shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde ahead of a matchup with the Yankees in May.”The decision comes after the Rays published a statement last week saying that the tragedies “have shaken us to the core.”

When will businesses understand that taking a political stand on controversial issues will hurt them? Keep your mouth shut and hope that both sides will continue to purchase your product.

The better question is why does a baseball team owned by billionaires need $35 million from ordinary Florida taxpayers? Fork them.

MLB has gone almost fully woke - I canceled my baseball package - had it 20+ years. I'll spend that time doing other things.

If only athletic teams would play their sports, actors would make films we could enjoy and singers would perform songs without becoming political….too much to hope for, I guess. Damn them all.

Sports teams are businesses. Why should tax revenue be used for any of their expenses? Especially if their position is contrary to our Constitution. Bravo for my governor.

Biting the hand that feeds it. Good. This should be a good lesson for the rest. Hopefully some Republicans in D.C. are taking note.

The Article does not specity what is meant by the subject "legislation."
Is it a grant or a loan?
In eiter case, the State of Florida should not be giving any such grant (or loan) to the Tampa Bay Rays. It's a for profit corporation that should not be subsidized by tax money. Many decades ago the Supreme Court of Florida incorrectly (in my opinion) decided that giving huge sums of tax receipts to subsidize professional football and/or baseball teams was "A proper public purpose."
These teams have been duping goverments as fools for decades. It needs to stop. These corporations make $ billions in profits and don't need tax money.
They merely want it, and they get it, and often to construct, reconstruct and/or repair their massively expensive stadiums.

Good for the governor now the TB Rays can find their own money to build a new practice field adding Gun Free Zone signs all around it if they feel woke about the 2nd Amendment. DeSantis just 'Disney World' the Rays, way to act governor. FTBR

I support the idea, but be prepared when these things boomerang on "conservatives". Then all's fair, right?
