New York's legislature voted on its last day of session Thursday to ban anyone under the age of 21 from buying or even possessing a semi-automatic rifle. The bill also requires anyone buying a semi-automatic rifle to get a license - which is currently only required in New York State for handguns. But it is just one part of a larger package of gun control measures announced earlier this week by Democratic legislative leaders and Gov. Kathy Hochul to bolster New York's already strict gun laws in the wake of a mass shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo.

Pick on the under 21 crowd, since they're not wealthy enough to take you to court all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, where they WILL win!
Old enough to die for the country, but not old enough to use our Second Amendment... we'll see.

This is fine. The GOP has to have some solutions, some compromises. They need a policy, other than to arm teachers. Be proactive, GOP!

Then they should NOT have to register with the Draft until they are 21 in NYS.

I am a hard core conservative. However I do believe it is worth at least having a debate about changing the age to buy a gun to 21. When a person joins the military they are immediately immersed in rigorous self discipline & extensive safety training in the use of guns. Not so for the average teen today. Just an unfiltered thought...

How will this stop gun violence when most of the violence in the big cities like New York and Chicago is committed with illegal guns?

The mayor of New York city is showing those Asians and white crackers who's the boss.
I always thought 21 years old was the law to purchase a handgun am I wrong? That's a broad stroke to include 'all' semi-auto rifles or as I like to call them self-loading but leave out automatic which they are not.
I would step lightly in joining with democrats to ban anything they'll overreach at next mass murder. I say ban psychotic killers and pursue them use money to secure schools do not install signs that read Gun Free Zone.

This is the one about the time in human history when the same person could legally kill an innocent person living in her womb but might lose the right to protect herself against somebody doing the same thing to her.

I grew up under a Red Flag law, my father's law. He told me that the 1911 I was shooting under his strict supervision since I was 8 would be handed to me on my 18th birthday contingent on what kind of man I grew up into. As luck or fate would have it by 18, I was working, going to college, spending an inordinate amount of my free time with my future wife.
Now that we have broken the family unit the things that the family unit used to do have gone undone with highly predictable consequences, so we turn to government to step into the void. Golly almost as though that was the plan all along.
Any measure we give in the name of compromise will be abused. Background checks seen reasonable until your government decides to hand your name to the news papers to be published like a damned sex offender. We just barely stopped Lisa Madigan from doing exactly that in Illinois.

The red flag laws should fix this up, as it worked so well in those shootings. Many of this murderers are known to law enforcement already, but nothing was done.
I defy anyone to find a Blue-City gang banger who hasn't had contact with law enforcement already. But law abiding people get shafted because they ARE abiding.

The thought occurred to me that the pro-gun lobby should start a petition to ban a gun that doesn't really exist and see how many gun-illiterate lefties fall for it.

The one gun control measure I do agree on is restricting sales to people less than 21 years old. (In fact, I'd like to raise it to about 25 - when biologists say the human brain actually achieve maturity.)
I'd also like to see EVERYTHING go back 21 - buying liquor (and other mind-altering substances), tobacco products, guns, medical treatment, enlisting in the military without parent/guardian's permission, getting an unrestricted driver's license, signing legal documents, etc.

Banning gun purchase and ownership for those under 21 would restrict the rights of millions of people on the off chance that one of them might be insane. This only proves that the insane are running the state and NYC. Judging by the idiot you elected as mayor, your judgement is seriously flawed.

The average teen is an idiot (yes including mine and I've told her my take on teens as a whole).
No one under 21 should be: drinking, gun using/owning, voting, getting drafted, allowed to marry, sign a contract or anything else we expect adults to handle or be responsible for.
I'm sure in times gone by plenty of under 18s could handle these things but society has changed and we have pushed back the years we give to kids to grow up. Change it all, acknowledge reality, be done with it.

I have the solution!
Let's outlaw MURDER!
That'll do the trick!
Anyone who violates THAT law will of course pay no attention to any other laws.
Such other laws apply ONLY to law-abiding citizens.
The 'RATS know this, of course.
The 'RATS don't care about murdered people.
The 'RATS care only about Political Power, and being able to Force people to do what the 'RATS want.

I am a fine with Age 21 to by a sem-automatic + fire arm, enhanced background checks, along with a cooling off period. I am not for outlawing guns.
