As Russian troops tighten their grip on the strategic port town of Mariupol, their strategy is finally becoming clear. Russian military commander Rustam Minnekaev now says the second phase of President Vladimir Putin’s “special operation” is focused on establishing a “land corridor” from the Donbas all the way to Moldova, which would cut off the rest of Ukraine from the sea. “One of the tasks of the Russian army is to establish full control over the Donbas and southern Ukraine. This will provide a land corridor to the Crimea, as well as influence the vital objects of the Ukrainian economy

President Biden’s climate envoy, John Kerry, says he’s putting the natural gas industry “on notice,” suggesting it has a decade at most to solve for the emissions that are driving Earth’s temperature dangerously higher. (Snip) “We have to put the industry on notice: You’ve got six years, eight years, no more than 10 years or so, within which you’ve got to come up with a means by which you’re going to capture, and if you’re not capturing, then we have to deploy alternative sources of energy,” the one-time presidential candidate said. The natural gas industry sees itself in a continuing

Rent prices across the U.S. climbed to record highs in March largely because an increasing number of potential buyers are being pushed out of the market, according to a new report. The median monthly asking rent increased 17% compared with a year ago, to $1,940, according to real estate brokerage Redfin. This marked the largest annual jump since February 2020, according to Redfin's data. The price and demand for rentals have surged as "many potential first-time homebuyers are quickly being priced out of the market by record-high home prices and fast-increasing mortgage rates," Redfin chief economist Daryl Fairweather said in

Oakland resident Louisa Spier was riding her mountain bike in the Oakland Hills when she was robbed at gunpoint last month. Spier said three thieves approached her on a trail that runs along Skyline Boulevard and demanded that she turn over her bike; one of them pointed a gun in her face. “I felt super scared … and super heartbroken,” Spier said. “I love Oakland, I love living in Oakland and I’ve lived here for over 30 years. It made me feel so sad.” Spier said she was riding alone, which she does regularly, on a Tuesday afternoon, following the

Two people were killed after a car attempted to pass by a railroad crossing and was hit by an Amtrak train in Houston, officials said Sunday. A black Chrysler 300 was traveling in northeast Houston about 8 p.m. Saturday when the level crossing signals went down and the flashing red lights and bell rang indicating a train was going to pass the Van Hut Lane train crossing, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the driver of the vehicle went around another vehicle stopped at the intersection and tried to cut through the crossing

The state housing department is gearing up to send stern warnings to cities trying to skirt a new housing law advocates hope will bring more affordable housing. Senate Bill 9, a state law that went into effect Jan. 1, allows property owners to build duplexes and in some cases, fourplexes, on most single-family parcels across the state. Cities, more than 240 of which opposed the bill, have pushed back against the state with ordinances that would severely curb what property owners can build. The Housing and Community Development Department confirmed it has received complaints about 29 such cities it told

PHOENIX -- The number of people coming to the southern border to seek asylum is growing. It’s now also putting a strain on workers at Sky Harbor airport. Arizona’s Family spoke with a handful of migrants at the airport. They came from different places like Cuba, Peru and Haiti. Up to 400 migrants arrive at Sky Harbor each day with nothing but the clothes on their backs, a plastic bag full of personal information and a

If you haven't filed your taxes yet and panicked Friday at the sight of April 15 on the calendar, you can breathe easy -- the tax deadline this year isn't until next week. The Internal Revenue Service moved Tax Day, which is almost always April 15 each year, again for 2022 for the third straight year. The deadline in 2020 and 2021 were both extended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year's push-back had nothing to do with COVID-19, and everything to do with a local holiday in the IRS' hometown, Washington, D.C. Federal offices in D.C. are closed on Friday

The claim: A photo shows a KKK billboard in a North Carolina county where a recent Donald Trump rally took place

President Biden's approval rating has reached the lowest level of his presidency, with a new poll showing only a third of Americans approve of his job performance. Just 33% of Americans approve of Biden's job performance compared to 54% who disapprove, according to the results of a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday. That mark ties the lowest approval Biden has received in the poll during his precedency, matching the number set in January when the president faced a 33-53 approval deficit. Biden's approval numbers are slightly among registered voters, with 35% saying they approve of the president's job performance compared

American women and gender-diverse individuals are disproportionately affected by climate change, but municipal climate plans fail to address family planning or gender equity solutions, a new report has found. The report, released on Tuesday by the Center for Biological Diversity, scrutinized 21 climate plans in cities nationwide, whose total populations represent about 10 percent of the U.S. population. The authors found that none of the plans included family planning, contraception or reproductive health solutions and that only one city — Boston — referred to gender equity as a climate change mitigation strategy. “Societies are more resilient when governments invest in
