A federal appeals court ruled on Tuesday local governments in California can sue oil companies in state courts for allegedly causing climate change and hiding it from the public. The suit, which dates back to 2017, is seeking damages for more than 30 companies, which the anti-oil San Francisco Chronicle said fossil fuels producers “profit from products contributing to rises in temperatures and sea levels.”And that means climate change is forcing cities and counties in the state to spend more money on infrastructure, including sea walls. The plaintiffs in the case are San Mateo, Marin and Santa Cruz counties and the cities of Richmond, Santa Cruz and Imperial Beach

Ah, wouldn't it be lovely if the decision of the court was to enjoin any oil company from selling it's products in California, and forbid any electricity made using fossil fuels from going there? Just give 'em what they ask for!

I want discovery. I want them to prove - not merely appeal to authority - that Man's actions and works significantly affect the climate of the planet. I want Experts, on both sides, AND their reseach AND how computer models reflect, or don't, the reality of the climate.
I want to point out that THEY the Warmists, have predicted the Ocean's rise, and seen the Ocean the same as it has always been.
I double-dog dare you!! Provided it's not a Kangaroo Court like the J6 investigation, we will finally lay this to rest.

This at a time when 80% of LA's "smog" comes from the coal burning in CHINA, carried by the prevailing winds, not from the American internal combustion engine.

There is no way that it can be proven that oil companies cause climate change and have hidden the evidence of that from the public. Exxon was a few hundred million years from being invented when Central Texas was covered by a shallow ocean and calcium carbonate-based plants and animals were solidified into thick limestone formations that were uncovered by erosion as the seas receded. From around 2.5 million years ago to around 12,000 years ago, the Laurentide ice sheet covered much of North America. From warm shallow seas to being covered by ice sheets a thousand feet thick is very strong evidence of radical climate change and nary an automobile, lawnmower, or leaf blower was to blame. Any court that finds any oil company guilty of causing and hiding climate change is illegitimate and should be eradicated by the people.

I guess we should shut off all fossil fuel to California. Their government will sue you if you don't. That goes for power companies too. Obey the laws of CA!

They are going to have a hard time proving that fossil fuels contribute to climate change. The earth's climate has been changing before humans starting existing as we know them. What caused those changes? The oil producers need to stop delivering to California and see what happens.

I wonder how San Francisco Chronicle staff get to work. If they are going to do a hit piece against fossile fuels, then they are remiss in not providing full disclosure of how they get to work.

In human history, there have been acute "Climate Changes". Noah's Great Flood, the Mondor Minimum are just a couple of examples. If any of the larger volcanos decide to erupt, Global Cooling due to ash in the atmosphere will occur.
Man is not more powerful than Nature, no matter what the Climate Alarmists may say.

This is wonderful news!
Finally - - the gullible warmists may have to provide some real data - - to back up their nonsensical claims. Of course - - they won't be able to do this - - since no such data exists - - nor can it ever exist.
This should result in the death blow for the "climate change" fraud. I hope - - I hope - - I hope!

Okay. If I had decision making power over any oil/gas company doing business in California and saw the clear and present danger that government judicial action could force upon my business, I'd move to shutter all business operations in that state and prohibit the sale or transport of my products into that state.

Fine, immediately stop all deliveries of all fossils fuels within California. They will crash and burn in three days. Send the fuels to red states at a huge discount.

So all the oil companies should just shut down their gas stations and walk away. My bet is that if they did it, the Cali folks would be on their knees begging for them to come back within 24 hours or less.

I'm probably being simplistic but what would happen if oil companies just shut off the flow to California tomorrow? Simply stop oil deliveries to the state, close their oil depots, pipelines, factory gas stations and move operations to fossil fuel friendly states. I know it's extremely unlikely but it would be a hoot to see the reaction in Sacramento. As it stands now California just uses these lawsuits to squeeze some money from the oil companies, the oil companies give in and things just move along. I say cut them off and let the voters decide.

The national average price per gallon is $4.10 according to AAA. The price is $5.90 in California.
If they can't prove that pollution is caused by petroleum products, then the Calif regulations on gasoline sold in the golden state will have to change and the revenue from taxes on overpriced gasoline in Calif will be drastically reduced.
Consequences of your actions is ignored by California government idiots.

About 80% of 9 th circuit decisions are overturned, if they get to the U.S. Supreme Court. And I can't imagine the Supreme Court not reviewing this one.

Double whammy. Carbon from the fires and fewer trees to sequester CO2.

The state needs to find a new source of revenues, and likely thinks the oil companies will be the new tobacco companies.
Yet, i don't believe many of the State, City, or County bonds mention the exposure to this issue.
Discovery will be interesting, more-so from those looking to sue these companies.

Ninth circus will more than likely be overturned as it should be. Just claiming something caused these problems does not make it so. I would like to see the real science they will use as testimony. Not just bloviating tree huggers spouting their nonsense and relying on 'models'. Considering the models have been wrong ever since they started coming up with them. If you cannot replicate an outcome in the real world it is not science. It is propaganda.

This is judicial overreach. It is not an issue for the courts. If anything is to be done, it should be done by the legislative branch of government with the consent of the governed.
