The Tennessee General Assembly has banned the teaching of critical race theory, passing a law at the very end of the legislative session to withhold funding from public schools that teach about white privilege. California's population fell by more than 182,000 people in 2020, marking the first year-over-year loss ever recorded for the nation's most populous state.
State officials announced Friday that California's population dipped 0.46% to just under 39.5 million people from January 2020 to January 2021.
The news comes one week after the U.S. Census Bureau announced a paltry population growth for California, resulting in the state losing a congressional seat for the first time because it grew more slowly than other states over the past decade.

Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Wednesday informed unemployed Floridians during a Wednesday press conference that May will be the last month they can collect unemployment benefits without proving they are looking for work.
DeSantis, who had lifted the state’s policy requiring such proof because of the pandemic, said that reopened Florida now offers ample opportunity for employment, and capable residents need to get off the government dole, according to CBS Miami.
“Normally when you’re getting unemployment, the whole idea is that it’s temporary, and you need to be looking for work to be able to get off unemployment,” DeSantis said. “It was a disaster, so we suspended those job search requirements.

Republicans in the Texas House of Representatives moved a big step closer early Friday to making Texas the latest GOP-controlled state to pass sweeping election law changes. The lawmakers advanced a major bill that underwent significant revisions in a late-night session and was finally approved shortly after 3 a.m. central time. Debate on the bill began around 6:00 p.m. central time, but just a couple of hours later, Democrats filed a procedural challenge that halted debate for hours. During that time, lawmakers hashed out amendments to address some of the concerns Democrats and voting rights organizations had raised. The bill was approved 81-64.
Democratic Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser on Wednesday defended her recent decision to ban dancing and standing at weddings in the District of Columbia and suggested District residents should instead be glad they can even host a wedding.
Asked during a CNN interview what good a wedding is without dancing, Bowser chuckled and replied, “Well, I think there’s a lot of good to a wedding, like people starting off their lives together and doing it in a safe way, and not doing it in a way that puts themselves or their guests in danger.”
A federal grand jury indicted four former officers on civil rights charges in the death of Minneapolis resident George Floyd, according to an indictment released on Friday.
Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, J. Kueng, and Tou Thao were indicted together for violating Floyd’s right to freedom from unreasonable seizure and excessive force, and failure to provide medical care to Floyd during his arrest.
Chauvin was convicted of murder last month, a year after video emerged of Chauvin pinning Floyd to the ground during his arrest until after he lost consciousness. The three other officers also took part in Floyd’s arrest.
