Former first lady Michelle Obama fears for her daughters when they get behind the wheel of a car amid police use-of-force incidents, she said.Obama is "breathing a sigh of relief" after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of unintentional second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in the death of George Floyd, though she said there's "still work to be done."“Many of us [black people] still live in fear as we go to the grocery store or walking our dogs or allowing our children to get a license. Then this is what you do Mooch. You tell your two urchins to have legal registered working vehicles. You also tell them to have valid drivers licenses and insurance. Finally and this is the big one. Tell them to obey the law. Do all of those things and I guarantee you their police encounters will be zero.

I too live in fear during those moments when I resist arrest, run from the police, lunge at another teen girl with a butcher knife, kidnap my ex-girlfriend's children, scream at "racist cops," grab their tasers (or their guns) and jump back in my car and begin to drive away... but fentanyl takes the edge off and then I don't feel the fear as acutely. I persevere, knowing that I will be remembered as a gentle and kind and sometimes shy student who wanted to become a doctor.

Often perception is reality in the black community. Many blacks grow up being told whitey is out to get them so any encounter becomes confirmation. I often hear blacks say they are shadowed in stores. Could it be because they expect to be profiled so they sense it even if it isn't happening? Or perhaps they feel some need to make such a claim to validate their blackness? I have never sensed being watched or shadowed perhaps because I don't posses any such paranoia.
