The House passed Democrats' massive election reform bill, the "For the People Act" on Wednesday in wake of lingering bitterness over the 2020 election and Jan. 6 Capitol attack. Republicans warned that the legislation amounts to a federal takeover of the election system that will create opportunities for fraud, while Democrats say that the longtime wishlist of reforms would expand voting access and reduce the influence of money in elections. Democrats previously passed a version of H.R. 1 — the bill number saved to signify a top priority of the majority party — in the last Congress in 2019, but it never got a vote in the Republican-controlled Senate.

In fact, the data indicates quite the opposite. Mississippi bought into the entire draconian scheme and has one of the highest death rates in the nation. Politicians have too much power over our lives. Many used the pandemic as another excuse to take more. Early on, politicians declared that they would decide who was “essential.” Everyone else was told to stay home. Much of the economy stopped. Millions were laid off. Then politicians relaxed the rules for industries that they deemed “essential.” “You can’t just call somebody essential without implicitly suggesting that half the workforce is not essential,” points out Mike Rowe, host of the surprise hit TV series, “Dirty Jobs.” That’s a big problem, says Rowe, because people find purpose in work. Now the Biden administration is eager to give money to people not working. It’s pushing

This question is interesting for its even split: “Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: The 2020 election was unfair because big tech companies, Hollywood, big corporations, and the media worked together to hold back information from voters and change the rules against Donald Trump, or were their actions fair?” Agree: 49%; Disagree: 51% Now here’s where it starts to get interesting:

One of the genuinely puzzling things about the 2020 election is the enthusiasm gap between candidate Biden and President Trump, which the corporate media often acknowledged as a cause for concern. Time magazine essentially explained the reversal of fortunes on that metric and numerous others during election month as precincts endlessly counted ballots. Legal maneuvering and massive donations to local elections offices brought scores of people who are typically non-voters into the process in Democrat strongholds. As a result, it is going about as you would expect. Americans’ response to Biden’s policies and the president himself is lukewarm at best. Two separate polls

The cynical response to this is “Who cares? The CDC has handled the pandemic terribly. Americans ignore their advice in other health matters, why wouldn’t they ignore this too?” I do think it matters to elite opinion, though, and elite opinion seeps down into the culture via its many levers of power. Like I said last week, it can’t be a coincidence that media coverage of family reunions is so hard to find despite the fact that more than 25 million Americans have already received both doses.
