A 107-year-old New Jersey grandmother who survived the Spanish flu a century ago is now a two-time pandemic survivor after beating COVID-19.
Brooklyn native Anna Del Priore, who turns 108 next month, was diagnosed with the coronavirus in May and her granddaughter, Darlene Jasmine, had assumed the worst, the Asbury Park Press reports.
“I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is it,’” Jasmine told the newspaper. “This is the thing that’s going to take her down.”
But Del Priore, who contracted the Spanish Flu during the influenza pandemic in 1918 that killed an estimated 50 million people worldwide, didn’t succumb to the virus. Instead, she’s still mobile, dancing whenever possible at Brighton Gardens,

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he feels “optimistic” that Republicans will be able to hold on to the Senate come November — but warned it was going to be “tough.”
McConnell (R-Ky.) offered his take on where things stood for the GOP ahead of the election during an appearance on Fox News’ “Bill Hemmer Reports” Tuesday, after being asked if his party could keep Senate control.
“Yeah, we can, but this was always going to be a tough cycle for us. This is a big class of incumbents because we took the majority six years ago,” the Kentucky Republican said.

Flare-ups from Australia to Japan show the world hasn’t learned an early lesson from the coronavirus crisis: to stop the spread, those with mild or symptom-free coronavirus infections must be forced to isolate, both from their communities and family.(SNIP)But lessons from Italy, South Korea and others that have successfully contained large-scale outbreaks show that there’s a tried-and-tested approach to cutting off transmission: move them out of their homes into centralized facilities while they get over their infections, which usually doesn’t require longer than a few weeks.

Kamala Harris, named Tuesday to be Joe Biden’s running mate, still has more than $1 million in unpaid bills left over from her failed 2020 presidential bid, according to a report.
The California senator raised about $39 million for her White House bid in 2019 and spent about $40 million, leaving her campaign with just $116,380 in the bank at the end of June, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday, citing Federal Election Commission filings.
Harris ended her campaign last December amid falling poll numbers and a lack of fundraising.

Right-wing law professor John C. Eastman wrote an editorial Wednesday that argued that because Harris' parents weren't citizens when she was born in 1964 in Oakland, California then she might not fit the definition of eligibility under the U.S. Constitution.

Joe Biden’s announcement of Senator Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) as his running mate on Tuesday was met with heavily mixed reactions from both sides of the political aisle, as reported by various sources.
On social media, while many figures in the Democratic Party’s establishment—from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to former President Barack Obama—lauded Harris’s selection, grassroots activists and commentators were not as pleased.
Some on Twitter pointed out Harris’s past as a prosecutor in California, first as San Francisco’s district attorney then as the state’s attorney general, and how she disproportionately targeted minorities with harsh sentences. Others noted that she had been one of Biden’s most vocal critics in the past

Hugh Hewitt is a terrible GOPe defender of all things associated with the Chamber of Commerce and Mitch McConnell. Hewitt is a total phony; so you know things are really bad when a lying liar who lies is calling out a fellow lying liar who lies.
A remarkable situation. WATCH:(Video)As I have told numerous voices of familiarity to CTH viewers, if they don’t start getting really confrontational soon, they will lose all credibility. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the United Arab Emirates and Israel have agreed to establish full diplomatic ties as part of a deal to halt the annexation of occupied land sought by the Palestinians for their future state. The announcement makes the UAE the first Gulf Arab state to do so and only the third Arab nation to have active diplomatic ties to Israel.Trump tweeted a statement from the countries, acknowledging the deal. He then told reporters in the Oval Office that it was “a truly historic moment.”

Legendary investigative journalist, Bob Woodard, will be releasing a new book about Donald Trump that details the president's reaction to the coronavirus pandemic, his thoughts on former presidents and his 'love letters' with North Korea leader Kim Jong-un. Sources familiar with Woodard's new book titled Rage told CNN that readers can expect explosive accounts of Trump's thoughts and actions on the coronavirus pandemic, the economic collapse and the Black Lives Matter protests. The new book comes just two years after Woodard, who is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, released Fear, which was based on hundreds of hours of interviews

MINNEAPOLIS — Prosecutors on Wednesday asked a judge to try four fired Minneapolis police officers jointly in George Floyd’s death. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison filed a memo arguing that evidence against the four is similar and that a single trial would spare witnesses and family members from the trauma of multiple trials. Holding one trial also would allow the community and the nation to absorb the impact of the verdicts for the four officers at once, instead of piecemeal, Ellison argued. “Forcing the community to endure four separate trials, with four separate verdicts at four different times, is likely

Joe Biden took his time selecting a running mate, which seemed prudent. But he came up with Sen. Kamala Harris of California, which seems anticlimactic. And, worse than that, weak.
Let’s set aside what sort of vice president and president Ms. Harris might make — the campaign will reveal the best and worst of her and voters will decide for themselves.
What does it say about Mr. Biden as a leader?
It does not say much, or at least much that is good.
Mr. Biden started the vice presidential selection process by putting himself in a box. He pandered. He said he would pick a woman.

One of the ringleaders of the Democratic Party’s attempt to destroy Brett Kavanaugh’s life in 2018 has been named Joe Biden’s running mate for the 2020 presidential election.
Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., used the Kavanaugh nomination in 2018 as a springboard for her failed presidential campaign. Focusing on her support for abortion and position on the Senate Judiciary Committee that handled the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings, Harris strongly opposed Kavanaugh’s nomination within moments of it being announced, and long before she had a chance to review his record.

Several of the 2020 Democratic primary candidates favored the abolishment of the Electoral College. Or, as once-confident candidate Elizabeth Warren put it, “I plan to be the last American president to be elected by the Electoral College.” Furor over the Electoral College among the left arose from the 2000 and 2016 elections. Al Gore and Hillary Clinton, respectively, won the popular votes. But, like three earlier presidents, they lost the Electoral College voting — and with it the presidency. The Founding Fathers saw a purpose in the Electoral College. It ensured that small, rural states would retain importance in national elections.

The U.S. Labor Department reported on Thursday that 963,000 workers filed for unemployment benefits last week, the first time jobless claims have fallen below 1,000,000 since March.
The drop in claims may fuel hopes that the labor market is improving after the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent mitigation efforts forced mass closures of businesses. Since March 21, about 56 million Americans have filed for unemployment.
The report on Thursday may also provide insight into whether the lowering of federal unemployment benefits has discouraged Americans from applying for them. $600-per-week federal unemployment benefits expired at the end of July, and on Saturday President Trump signed

It’s no secret that Kamala Harris got a leg up in California politics because she dated Willie Brown. (snip) why is Willie Brown, one of the smartest people in politics, warning Kamala away from the vice presidency? Willie Brown is doing so because he knows that Franklin Roosevelt was the only vice-presidential candidate on a ticket that failed to have later gone on to win the White House. Roosevelt was the Democrat candidate for vice president in 1920 when Warren G. Harding ran on a “return to normalcy.” Roosevelt eventually won the presidency in 1932. In reading George Will’s recent column (“The Difference between Trumpism and fascism”), I was struck by a few things: his elitist anti-Trump tone, his denigration of the President’s supporters and his lack of understanding of Donald Trump’s appeal. The thing which struck me most, however, was not a failure to know the past, but his inability to apply the lessons of history to the present. He recites the basics of the history of fascism while completely missing how that history applies to the current situation.

The Biden-Harris ticket is upside down. That’s our first reaction to the news that Vice President Biden has chosen the junior senator from California, Kamala Harris, to be his running mate. That makes a ticket where the vice presidential candidate seems, at least to us, to be of a more presidential personality than the elder statesman from Delaware. The more typical formulation is the young, ambitious executive type at the top of the ticket.
To see how odd this ticket really looks, imagine that in 2008 the ticket had been Biden-Obama. It would have gone down in flames. The trailblazing personality, the creative spirit, belonged to the younger man.

The streets of downtown Portland were quieter on Tuesday as nightly protests approach 80 consecutive nights of unrest but that is not because protesters are giving up. Instead, they are heading into residential areas, and people who live there are worried.

Lately, the number has been more like 55,000 cases and we haven’t exceeded 70,000 since July 31. (Except as otherwise indicated by a link, all numbers here are from Worldometer.)
One would expect the number of daily deaths attributed to the virus to reflect the level of new cases from about a month ago. Thus, it’s not surprising that we haven’t seen the daily death count decrease yet. That number is holding steady in the 1,250-1,500 range, except on weekends when the reported number

According to media accounts, a “power outage” delayed the debut of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on Wednesday — a foreshadowing of what we can expect from an anti-energy Biden–Harris administration. Both are committed to an extreme environmentalism that will cripple America’s oil and gas industry. Harris is opposed to all fracking. Biden has made as his vice-presidential running mate a San Francisco radical, whose voting record puts her to the left of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. This month, Trump came down hard on TVA executives for their plan to outsource American workers’ jobs to imported H-1B foreign workers by contracting with outsourcing firms such as Capgemini, CGI, and Accenture.
In an executive order, Trump demanded that TVA and all other federal agencies review their job and hiring practices to ensure that they are not displacing American workers in any way. As part of that order, Trump said he wants Lyash’s huge salary lowered immensely to no more than $500,000 a year.

Vice presidential candidates typically have to face scrutiny, and Joe Biden's choice, especially given the presidential candidate's advanced age and cognitive decline, will be no exception. He could have done the right thing by choosing his old friend Chris Dodd. Instead, Biden has selected an old rival, Kamala Harris. Democratic Party operatives, liberal activists, and media pundits—to the extent there's a difference—have been preparing for this moment for some time. Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) warned voters on Wednesday that Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), who was selected this week to be presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s running mate, is not the moderate that the media claims that she is.“Kamala is my colleague, so I want to congratulate her. I think she is very personable,” Kennedy said. “She’s very smart, she’s very aggressive, and she’s very liberal. I think of Kamala, I would describe her as Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez but smarter and without the bartending experience. She’ll be a very formidable candidate.”When asked if he viewed Biden-Harris as a “moderating influence” on the direction of the party, Kennedy responded, “No.”

President Donald Trump on Wednesday predicted that Sen. Kamala Harris would be a failure as former Vice President Joe Biden’s running mate.“I read today that she is very short on facts,” Trump said. “I think she’s going to be a big failure.”The president spoke about Harris at a press conference at the White House after the California senator joined Biden for their first rally together on Wednesday afternoon.Trump said he was surprised by Biden’s decision to choose Harris, citing their uncomfortable moments on the debate stage during the Democrat presidential primary.“[T]here was nobody more insulting to Biden than she was,” he said.
