Sen. Kamala Harris is now the Democratic nominee for vice president, which effectively means that, given Joe Biden’s declining mental health, she needs to be evaluated as a presidential candidate. One of the most important characteristics for anyone, especially a political leader, is integrity. We need to know if our leaders are committed to their values (even if we disagree with them) or if they will do and say anything to get and retain power. Ms. Harris has repeatedly been attacked by her opponents for doing the latter: first, she ran for office on a “tough-on-crime” platform and then tried to curry favor with criminals by proudly saying

Not to brag, but yes, I am bragging, I weighed the odds of Joe Biden choosing Kamala Harris as his vice presidential running mate, against those of her two rivals, Rep. Karen Bass, and former National Security Advisor Susan Rice, and argued that Joe was going to go for Kamala. Writing at AT on Aug. 2: My money's on his picking Harris in this situation based on who he is, but it's obvious he doesn't trust Harris, who has that lean and hungry look. No wonder nobody, including Joe Biden himself, knows who Joe Biden is going to pick.

At the same time, they assiduously avoid mentioning that the party with the real problem is their own. The Democrats’ nominee is suffering from an advanced case of dementia that makes it difficult for him to appear in public. The party’s leaders, to the extent they have any, are undoubtedly strategizing ways of getting him off the ticket following their “convention”–which they won’t actually hold. An unbiased observer might think it is the Democrats, not the Republicans, who have reason to fear the voters’ verdict this Fall.
