If you had any doubt that hard-left ideologues run government school systems in many (most?) places, take a look at Fairfax County, Virginia's most populous county, with over a million residents, one of the richest counties in the United States with an average household income well over one hundred thousand dollars.
The educrats who run the Fairfax public schools have advised parents there not to hire tutors or organize informal homeschool "pods" to replace the shuttered schools because some parents cannot afford to do so, and that would be "unfair."

Is it still OK for Susie to come over to do homework with Hannah, or do we need to get approval from the school board?

Go pound sand...
if I want to hire a tutor- it is my child and their education..I am the director of their education..
There are plenty of options for low income parents-if they seek it out.. life should not be handed on silver platter.. life isn’t fair! Outcomes are not equal..

Life is not fair. Too bad. I have known parents who either worked two jobs or both spouses worked to send their children to good schools.

What do you do when schools are not doing their job? Accept poor teaching or try to get your kids a proper education?

In a regular non virus year, parents hire tutors, parents take their kids on vacations, take them to museums, etc. So, Fairfax board of ed..............GFY. The behavior of Fairfax has made me very angry. Very. What high handed authoritarian garbage this is. They really expect us to believe that their kids won't be tutored? Sorry fellas , sell your lies to someone else.

Give the parents vouchers and make public schools compete. It's the only way for education to get better.

#1 Love the quote!
Lefties are waking up to what should have been obvious some time ago. Poor kids with less educated parents will suffer more educationally.
They might even have realized that these kids' parents may reconsider their support for the Democratic party.

This is chief difference between Republicans and Democrats.
Republicans push for the equality of opportunity. Everyone in this country has the opportunity to work hard and achieve their goals. On the other hand, Democrats continue to demand an equality of outcome, no matter how little effort a person expends. It's no secret how people in the country can afford to live in the suburbs: Get an education, get married, don't have children out of wedlock, don't take drugs, don't worship athletes and rappers, learn to speak proper English, respect police officers, stop rotting your mind and soul with rap music, and stop acting like a victim when you fail in life.

They call this equality. its the tyranny of the lowest common denominator. Your neighbor doesn't bother to work, but you do? That's unfair! You shouldn't work either, and the government will provide for all. You're not entitled to making extra money and being wealthier than your neighbor. Your neighbor cannot afford to own a home. Neither should you! Public housing for everyone! Your neighbor can't afford a car? Neither should you! Public transportation for everyone! Your neighbor cannot afford college for their children? Your children shouldn't receive advanced education either!
This is what the left means by equality.

It's too ironic. The Uber of education, LOL. I suspect some of these Pod teachers are on paid leave from the public school system. So you can't hire a private tutor to keep your kids" education on track (that's NOT fair) but if you're rich enough e to send your kids in a limo to the private school that the Obama kids went too, that's fair.

# 8 - this happened in the south starting in the '60's. Teachers were not allowed to fail anyone. My mother wanted my brother to repeat a grade since he'd not done well that year. The teacher said she couldn't do that anymore. Laws forbade failing or making kids repeat a grade. Thus began the decline of all students.

Public school teachers, public schools, school boards, teachers unions are and have been useless for a very long time.
They have NO intention of educating children. They don't teach, they indoctrinate. They have convinced a large portion of the population that they are necessary. Well they are if you are enjoying the last 4 to 5 decades of the finished product they've been churning out.
They rendered themselves obsolete and the Wuhan flu has finished the job.
Parents now have to admit, the emperor has no clothes. Small local schools that actually teach and have to earn that paycheck are the way to go.
Teachers don't give a damn about your kids and never have.

Obviously, (to well-off “liberals”) if even one person, particularly a child, in this country or world, is hungry or sick or stupid, we should all be hungry and sick. and stupid.

Some families have grandparents around available to do 24/7 education related tasks for the grand-children.
Some don't.
The Fairfax County School Board is made up of a remarkable bunch of dunces ~ yeah, that's my school board ~ who know nothing of how to deal with really smart kids ~ yeah, that's my grandkids ~ creating complete video theatrical performances at the age of 5... among other things ~ able to count to 1,000,000,000 ~ forwards and back. They learned to read on their own at 3!
Whether they are IN school, or AT home, their lives revolve around learning more and more and more and more..... soon, we will show them how to make mochi, at home ~ and maybe cut noodles.
School is for socialization according to the oldest one.
And perhaps athletic performances according to the youngest.
Except for the socialization, the children have always learned more at home than at school..... and during the lockdown, they've had mom and dad available for most of the day most days....
My conclusion with all this is that America pays for its fantastic transportation system, more than plentiful food supplies of all kinds, and great clothing through the hard work and dedication of people willing to abandon their children to the care of strangers..... who may not always have desirable intentions.
The 3 day work week would benefit the children tremendously.

Democrats remind me of the old Russian tale.
Vlad and Ivan are farmers. Vlad is jealous because Ivan has a cow. One day Vlad finds and old lamp and rubs it. A genie appears and tells Vlad he will grant one wish. Vlad says - kill Ivan's cow!
Dems want equality - of misery.

For the same reason don’t give your child piano lessons, allow them to take ice skating lessons, take them on a trip to the national parks, send them to a private or parochial school, or buy them a computer. All of these things are an unfair advantage. Your job as a parent is to make sure your kids graduate in the middle of their class and are ineligible for an academic scholarship, because that would be unfair to other kids of lesser means. Your job as an employee is to make sure you don’t stand out and get promoted, because that would be unfair to coworkers who are less skilled or productive. Be kind, humble and poor, Comrade. The State will thank you.

Titles One and other state and federal funding sources, not to mention volunteers and other private sources, hire and provide tutors for students during and after school all the time. We all pay for it. This is crap!

Dems running a race to the bottom. Can't have parents working to get a decent education for their children - that's not fair to the other kids.
This falls smack dab into the middle of the important concept:
Life is NOT fair.
If you are lucky, your umpire in a sport will be fair.
Frequently, your court case outcome may be fair.
Your club members might even be fair to you.
But overall - you can bet that life will not be fair. Get over it, it's not going to change.
