Georgia Rep. John Lewis, a longtime congressman and civil rights leader, announced Sunday he's undergoing treatment for stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
Lewis, a Democrat who has represented Georgia's 5th Congressional District for over 30 years, said doctors discovered the cancer during a routine visit.
"While I am clear-eyed about the prognosis, doctors have told me that recent medical advances have made this type of cancer treatable in many cases, that treatment options are no longer as debilitating as they once were, and that I have a fighting chance," Lewis said in a statement.

A gunman has killed one person and critically injured another inside a packed Texas church during a livestreamed service before he was shot dead by an armed member of the congregation. MedStar Mobile Healthcare spokeswoman Macara Trusty said two people were fatally shot at the West Freeway Church of Christ in White Settlement, which is about 8 miles west of Fort Worth. Trusty said she was told by a supervisor at the scene that one of the people who died was the shooter. A third person is in critical condition and is being treated at a hospital.

The Aspen Times deposited the metaphorical lump of coal in conservative columnist Glenn Beaton’s Christmas stocking this year. After a seven-year run as the paper’s one and only conservative columnist as well as its most widely read columnist, period, the editors terminated him.
The reason given for Glenn’s abrupt firing was that his “values” conflict with those of the newspaper. Glenn is a Trump supporter and has been critical of the Democratic candidates for president, as in this November 17 column. As it turns out, Glenn’s Christmas column was his last for the newspaper.

Virginia's Democratic governor, Ralph Northam, a.k.a., "Coonman," has been exonerated by the Washington Post's editorial page, ten months after they called on him to resign. Back then, he was being blasted for his medical school yearbook page, which featured a photo of two figures, one wearing minstrelly blackface getup, and the other in a full hooded Ku Klux Klan costume. We still don't know which one Northam was in that picture, he has yet to say, nor has he let us in on who his pal was, nor even told us where on earth he managed to get hold of a Klan suit.

Barack Obama squandered the opportunity of a lifetime to become a transformational president. That was his signature ambition, obvious enough in his infamous remarks about how he would fundamentally transform the country. One man was arrested after a high-speed pursuit with a stolen vehicle ended in Chisago County last weekend.
The Chisago County Sheriff's Office said deputies were notified of a possible stolen vehicle entering the county at about 10:58 p.m. Saturday after it had been involved in a terminated pursuit with a west metro police department. (snip) The driver had a felony warrant for being a felon in possession of a firearm and another felony warrant for terroristic threats, the department said.

Some progressive ideas sound good and seduce the young and naïve with their idealism. Socialism, for example, pretends that selfishness and indolence would not result from common ownership of the means of production. “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need,” was so seductive that it helped inspire communists for over a century, and still appeals to those whose needs exceed their abilities.
But some other ideas, currently being taken seriously by American progressive intellectuals are so self-evidently ridiculous that it is hard to believe that anyone could take them seriously. But this, via City Journal, is not a joke:

A Hanukkah celebration in a New York suburb turned into horror late Saturday night after a man entered and began stabbing people, witnesses say. Five victims were taken to nearby hospitals, according to police.The Orthodox Jewish Public Affairs Council for the Hudson Valley Region said in a tweet victims inside the Monsey residence were Hasidic Jews. Two people are in critical condition, co-founder of the council, Yossi Gestetner, told CNN. Local police said the perpetrator fled the scene in a vehicle but that they were able to track him down. The assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice just issued a statement reminding that America is not a “police state,” and neither should be the college campuses that dot the landscape of this country.
The very fact the DOJ has to release this statement shows how very far America’s freedoms have fallen.
“College campuses should not be mini police states,” wrote Eric Dreiband, assistant attorney general, as well as several other attorneys, in a “Statement of Interest” filed in U.S. District Court on behalf of plaintiffs accusing Jones County Junior College in Mississippi of several egregious freedom of speech violations against students.

History doesn’t follow a schedule. The events that define an era often happen before or after the onset of a new decade. It’s been said that the Sixties didn’t begin on January 1, 1960, but on November 22, 1963, the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated. They didn’t end on January 1, 1970, but on August 9, 1974, when Richard Nixon resigned as president.
Keep this in mind as you look at retrospectives of the 2010s. The calendar decade may be drawing to a close, but the tendencies, ideas, movements, sentiments, and personalities associated with the past 10 years may not be quite ready to leave the stage.
In an interview on Friday, Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D-Church of Social Justice) clarified his drug policy, calling for decriminalization of all drugs including methamphetamine, cocaine, and ecstasy.
“Incarceration should not even be a response to drug possession,” Buttigieg told editors at the Des Moines Register.
An editor pressed him, “Is that across the board? So if it’s meth or coke or ecstasy, any drugs, if it’s possession, incarceration isn’t…”

Taxpayers in California and New York shoulder some of the heaviest tax burdens in the nation, and now new data show the two have something else in common: Their growth rates have slowed.
It’s probably no coincidence.
According to the California Department of Finance, during the year that ended June 30, more people left the Golden State than moved in — the first time that’s happened since 2010.
Its net population grew by 141,300, to 39.96 million. That’s a increase of just 0.35 percent, down from 0.57 percent growth over the prior 12 months. Together, the two years mark California’s smallest growth in more than a century.

After searching police reports and arrest records, CBS13 found that while the rate of these grab and dash crimes is on the rise, the rate of arrest is down. We turned to law enforcement and the retail industry for answers. Both blame a California law intended to make “neighborhoods safe.”
A 60-year-old man who was brutally attacked and robbed for $1 on Christmas Eve has died from his injuries, the NYPD said Saturday.
Juan Fresnada was with his husband in the Bronx early Tuesday when six individuals approached them and demanded money, police said. When the victims refused, they were attacked, according to the NYPD.
Surveillance video released by police Friday shows one of them repeatedly punching and kicking Fresnada as he's on the ground. One of them hits Fresnada with a metal garbage can, the video shows.
The top cop in Fort Worth, Texas, showed he can still hoof it when it comes to chasing down a fleeing suspect.
Chief Ed Kraus’ pursuit of the suspect Friday morning through backyards and over fences was recorded by a police helicopter over the scene.
Police said the suspect took off after causing a multi-car crash on I-20, Fox 4 Dallas reports. Kraus happened to be in the area in his police vehicle. "The bad guy decides to take a wrong turn and runs toward the chief,” police spokesman Buddy Calzada told the station. "The bad guy jumped the fence and the chief jumped the fence to keep going after him.
The pilot and four passengers were killed when a twin-engine plane with six people on board crashed in Louisiana on Saturday morning en route to the Peach Bowl in Georgia to watch LSU play Oklahoma.
Robert Benoit, the fire chief in Lafayette -- where the crash took place -- confirmed the deaths, while also reporting that the lone surviving passenger had been taken to the hospital in critical condition. That passenger was identified as Stephen Berzas, 37.
Three other persons, including two U.S. postal employees, who were on the ground at the time of the crash, suffered injuries, Lafayette Fire Department spokesman Alton Trahan said.
