The Mexican Navy announced on Thursday that it has begun a search-and-rescue mission in the Caribbean Sea for two sailboats carrying "humanitarian aid" to Cuba. Reuters describes the vessels as "sailboats" and says they left Isla Mujeres, in the Mexican Caribbean state of Quintana Roo, last week. They did not arrive in Havana as scheduled on Tuesday or Wednesday. The journey is about 300 to 350 miles, depending on the route. Combined, the two boats had nine people on board, including eight adults and a four-year-old child. Reuters also reports that they were a part of the "Nuestra America Convoy."

Do any of these 'activists' have any idea how to operate a sailboat? As #1 notes, the ocean is very unforgiving. I may add, if you are used to recreational boating on a lake or river, that as soon as you are far enough from shore that you cannot swim to it, you are in a different, and potentially lethal, environment. I hope the little kid is OK. I have NO sympathy for the foolish adults.

The report says the captain and crews are "experienced sailors," and the boats are appropriately equipped. So there's reason to hope. And especially when I think about the child aboard, four years old, I think the parents/guardians should lose custody, but I hope not to the sea.

I didn't see any mention of the weather. It can be deadly if there is no harbor nearby to run to. My first cousin was on a sailboat in the Caribbean when a quick storm blew up. The boat owner was a very experienced and competent sailor but they became in a life threatening situation fighting the high wind and couldn't get the main sale down. They were at the point of cutting the mast with the emergency ax when the wind eased a little and they got through the storm. My cousin could laugh about it later and said he would never get near water again unless it was in his bathtub. I don't want anything bad to happen to those people, fools that they are, and especially an innocent child who had no choice about going. As No.1 posted, the sea is unforgiving.

This falls into the category of Leftist stupidity and arrogance. It's the same reason that people have been shot and killed by ICE. The Leftists think they can do whatever they want without consequence with total disregard for the realities of a situation. Then reality raps them over the head with a club and they whine and cry about it. What does that tell you about their ability to think rationally, about anything?

Pictures I found online show them to be two heavily laden cruising catamarans. Havana is 300 nautical miles dead upwind from Isla Mujeres, and cruising catamarans don’t go upwind very well at all under sail. Even under power it’s difficult, slow and uncomfortable pounding into the seas. So it’s not uncommon for such sailboats to be thought “overdue” when they are actually just holed up somewhere resting and/or licking their wounds. What is unusual however, most cruisers have some form of high seas comms these days. Between Sat phones, Starlink, Spot-type devices and old-fashioned SSB radio, most sailors have some way to communicate.

Excellent posts, all. Having friends with sailboats, I came to learn that if you wanna be somewhere at an appointed time, a sailboat is NOT your first option! As noted, the prevailing trade winds are east-to-west, making it a slog beating into the wind, with a long tack northeast, then southeastward. Plenty of hazards, natural and man-made (actual no-kidding Pirates Of The Caribbean). I pray for their safety, but as #1 succintly stated, the sea is most unforgiving. The catamaran is faster than a monohull, but still a long ride (guessing at least 36 hours)

I have sailed the ocean with a good friend on his medium sized sailboat many times. When you are many miles from land and a storm brews up, you damned well better understand precisely how to reduce sail size, or reef it down, and what direction to take big swells. Sailing in the "desired" direction is often not safe with large waves, take them wrong on the hull and you'll capsize or otherwise founder. Incapacity or error are instantly punished, no excuses, no second chance. Fools and the ocean don't mix well.

After two months of unyielding negotiations, both parties gave up early Friday on reaching a grand accord to reform and fund the Department of Homeland Security. Instead, Senate Republicans accepted what Democrats have been offering for weeks — cash for all of DHS except for ICE and part of Customs and Border Protection. The Senate approved the funding package by a voice vote and is now expected to begin a scheduled two-week recess. The House could vote as soon as Friday, before the shutdown would break the record Saturday night for the longest funding lapse of any federal agency in U.S. history. Senate Majority Leader John Thune called the outcome “unfortunate” Friday.

Democrats in the US, along with their allies in the media, seem particularly invested in law-based arguments. For the past three-plus weeks, Trump's critics have alleged that he violated the War Powers Act by initiating hostilities without approval from Congress, which is not at all true. Opponents insist that "imminence" is the standard for addressing threats to the US and its interests, but that standard does not exist in law or practice. The International Olympic Committee is barring male athletes from competing against women at the Olympics, beginning with the 2028 summer games set to take place in Los Angeles. IOC president Kirsty Coventry, a decorated former Olympic swimmer from Zimbabwe, announced the ban Thursday after promising to protect the integrity of women’s sports leading up to her election. “The policy that we have announced is based on science and it has been led by medical experts with the best interest of athletes at its heart. The scientific evidence is very clear: male chromosomes give performance advantages in sports that rely on strength, power, or endurance,” Coventry said in a video.

That Democrats want to protect criminal illegal immigrants from deportation is not exactly breaking news, considering their hysterical reactions and theatrics to the mass deportations that occurred in 2025 and into 2026 as a result of President Donald Trump's crackdown on people who were here illegally. But to hear them so brazenly admit that it's at the core of their refusal to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) amid the terrorist attacks and threats against the homeland, as well as the long airport lines and TSA workers not getting paid, just adds a whole new layer of despicable to it.

On Tuesday, the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals issued a ruling that dramatically expands the federal government’s authority to detain migrants without bond, holding that even those arrested inside the United States — far from any port of entry — can be subject to mandatory detention. In Herrera Avila v. Bondi, the court adopted a broad interpretation of federal immigration law that effectively erases the long-assumed distinction between migrants stopped at the border and those living in the interior. Joaquin Herrera Avila entered the United States illegally in 2006 and again in 2016. He was arrested during a 2025 traffic stop and placed in removal proceedings

As an effort to delay escalation until appropriate assets arrive in the theater, the five-day delay on Donald Trump's ultimatum on Hormuz traffic looks valuable indeed. Through indirect channels, the US has sent the Iranian regime a 15-point plan to end the current conflict. The Wall Street Journal summarizes it as essentially the US position before the war, along with a demand to allow traffic to resume unmolested through the Strait of Hormuz. Some of America’s wealthiest couples are now collecting $100,000 a year in Social Security benefits, a six-figure payout that a new proposal says should be capped to help keep the retirement program solvent beyond 2032. About 1 million beneficiaries receive at least $50,000 annually — or more than $100,000 for a retired couple — representing less than 2% of the roughly 56 million people age 65 and older who get Social Security, according to an analysis by the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. The nonpartisan think tank projects that share will grow over time because of annual cost-of-living adjustments and as more Americans reach retirement age.

Two thousand years ago, Jesus walked into the Temple and saw money changers and merchants turning a house of worship into a profit racket.
