Pope Leo XIV has won many plaudits for aspects of his Petrine Ministry so far--his Christ-centred preaching, personal kindness, and emphasis on peace and reconciliation to name a few. But recent events at the Vatican have heightened concerns that Leo is also tolerating, and perhaps even condoning, elements of the previous pontificate that were particularly harmful to souls on account of the public scandal they caused. (Snip) So what would St. Aurelius Augustine of Hippo have made of them? To find out I asked Professor John Rist, widely regarded as one of the Church’s finest scholars of St. Augustine and the fathers of the early Church.

The brutal murder of Charlie Kirk has evoked an array of passionate and argued responses, many of which are misguided or patently false: We need to cool the rhetoric. Trump in power breeds unrest. Both sides of the political aisle engage equally in political violence. Kirk’s right-wing incendiary language had deadly consequences. The shooter was merely a paramour overwhelmed by protective passion. These are all distractions (at the very least) from the truth about Charlie Kirk’s death: Charlie Kirk died because he went into spaces that were bastions of leftist thought and confronted an inherently violent ideology with biblical truth —

ASHLAND — Ashland County Fair officials booted the Ashland County Democratic Party booth on Thursday following the political party’s sale of “offensive buttons” directed toward President Donald Trump.  The Ashland County Fair posted on Facebook around 8 p.m. on Thursday that it had been “made aware of offensive buttons in the Democrat booth.” The Ashland County Fair Board would like to let you know this afternoon we were made aware of offensive buttons in the Democrat booth. We are a family friendly fair and do not condone this from any vendor/merchant. We apologize for those who saw the display. The democrat party has been asked to pack their booth up for this year so they will not be here the remaining of our Fair week. This is not political, we just can't have this at our County Fair!

Acting United States Attorney for Minnesota Joe Thompson called a press conference for 11:00 a.m. yesterday morning. I attended the press conference along with several other reporters to hear his statement and ask a few questions. Thompson called the press conference to announce indictments and criminal complaints in eight new fraud cases against “Minnesota men” with such resonant names as Mokhtar Hassan Aden, Mustafa Dayib Ali, and Khalid Ahmed Dayib. Aden founded the company Brilliant Minds Services LLC and operated it with Ali and Dayib out of the Griggs-Midway Building on University Avenue in St. Paul. The business model was built on defrauding Minnesota’s first-in-the-nation Medicaid Housing Stabilization Services program.

Given the national anguish and pain over the assassination of Charlie Kirk, you might think that the leftist big media would at least be treading softly right now, especially given the overwhelming evidence that’s already been made public about Kirk’s alleged assassin. But you would be wrong. We’ve already addressed the lies and exaggerations told about Kirk to somehow justify his murder. Now the left is trying to come up with a counter-narrative about his assassin. Kirk wasn’t murdered by an unhinged leftist; he was killed by a MAGA adherent. It’s a lie on stilts. Let’s start with what we know:

Facebook can be a place where silly people say silly things, and I have at times been one of them. But after the recent “transgender” shooting at Annunciation School in Minneapolis, in a moment of gravity I decided to post something obvious to me that seemed less obvious to others: that a boy who thinks he is a girl—or a horse or a dog or a cat or anything else that he is not—is unwell. It may be just a phase that, with time and maturity, he will outgrow. But this delusion, if it persists, does not cease to be a delusion. It becomes something evil and malign,

U.S. Citizens For ‘Good Moral Character’

recent U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services memo announced that foreigners aspiring to become American citizens must meet a “Good Moral Character” standard. This directive is a return to policies that existed before the loosening of naturalization requirements in the early 1990s. That USCIS is now again requiring foreigners to demonstrate “character commensurate with the standards of average citizens” is positive. Critics argue the change will make acquiring citizenship too difficult or political. But as the USCIS memo relates, naturalization is not simply “a procedural immigration benefit.”

Following the meeting between International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi and Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Cairo, it was announced that an agreement had been reached between Tehran and the nuclear watchdog. At first glance, this development appeared to offer a glimmer of progress in the long, drawn-out saga over Iran’s nuclear program. Yet, once both sides returned to their respective capitals, the narrative quickly unraveled. Araghchi insisted that no agreement had been struck that would in any way violate legislation passed by the Iranian parliament,

ABC stunned the media world on Wednesday by announcing they were suspending "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" indefinitely after several ABC station groups withdrew their support for the show. It was a similar shock to CBS setting a cancellation date for "Late Show with Stephen Colbert." The Left went into conniption fits, grieving both festivals of partisan propaganda. We heard a thousand cries of the "First Amendment" being despoiled and the old reliable screech about President Donald Trump's "authoritarian playbook." ABC's George Stephanopoulos mourned the assault on "independent media," and he's the last person in America who would qualify for that label.

President Trump on Thursday heavily criticized Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) after four House Republicans joined Democrats to help defeat a censure vote over her reprehensible comments following the assassination of Charlie Kirk. "I think she's terrible," Trump said during a press gaggle aboard Air Force One. "I think she should be impeached. I think she's terrible." While congressional members are often removed from their positions through the process of expulsion, rather than impeachment, the President's words indicate he is incredibly disappointed with the GOP members who let her slide without so much as a reprimand. As he should be.

Here we go again. The wailing about ZOMG AN ATTACK ON FREE SPEECH is at peak volume ("These go to eleven") again. Much like global warming, it's not really happening. I addressed the mundane and practical reasons for Jimmy Kimmel's suspension in Thursday's Morning Briefing, and in my latest "Beyond the Briefing" video. As I wrote in the promo post for the latter, it was a routine workplace decision. Elizabeth MacDonald posted this on X about an hour after I wrote that (click and read the whole thing): (X) Like I said, just business. In an astounding coincidence, as the news arrived that Charlie Kirk, founder and head of the enlightened traditionalist movement Turning Point USA, had been assassinated, I was sitting in the Oval Office of the White House across the Resolute Desk from the President of the United States. Although I have known Donald Trump for more than 25 years and have generally been in touch with him throughout that period, I had not seen him in person for some years. I have written approximately two million words about him, almost all of it reasonably or unambiguously favourable, though not uncritically so, mainly on U.S. internet sites,

Make no mistake here: Jimmy Kimmel doomed himself with his lunatic lecture Monday night, the latest in a long string of partisan rants rarely even pretended to try for humor. And it was the complaints from ABC’s affiliates — likely based on what they were hearing from their viewers — that led the network to suspend his show late Wednesday. Yes, Brendan Carr muddied the waters earlier on Wednesday, when the Federal Communications Commission chief, touching on Kimmel, suggested the FCC is “going to have remedies that we can look at.” Yet the “comedian’s” goose was surely already cooked,

Rep. Senate Republicans confirmed dozens of President Donald Trump’s nominees with one vote Thursday, days after changing the chamber’s rules along party lines to allow group consideration for most executive branch picks. The first bloc included 48 Trump nominees for midlevel executive branch positions and ambassadorships. The Democrats have been losing support from voters for well over a decade. It’s to the point now where they’re getting desperate. The Hill mentioned this in an article from August 22: A devastating New York Times report Wednesday showed that of the 30 states that maintain voter registration records by political party, Democrats fell behind Republicans in all of them between the 2020 and 2024 elections. In total, Republicans added up to 4.5 million voters compared to Democrats, creating a huge hole that could set Democrats back for years. “I think it should be an alarm” for the party, Democratic strategist Eddie Vale. “I think it’s a real problem.”
