SOMERVILLE, Tenn. — Investigators released new information Friday after exhuming the body of Pauline Mullins Pusser nearly six decades after she was buried. Pauline was the wife of Sheriff Buford Pusser, a Tennessee legend known for carrying a stick as he cracked down on crime.
Mark Davidson, District Attorney for the 25th Judicial District, said the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has “produced evidence sufficient to create probable cause.” That means that “more likely than not,” if Buford Pusser were alive today, an indictment could be presented to the McNairy County Grand Jury for their consideration against him for the murder of his wife.
More than likely, Davidson explained,

This is even better than using a Grand Jury. Not only does the prosecution get to presents it's side and it's side only of the case, the defendant isn't even around to secure legal representation to counter.

In the summer of 1973, Sheriff Pusser was at Nashville's E.B. Smith Chevrolet supporting William Morris's The Twelfth of August, his biography, and the movie Walking Tall with Joe Don Baker, which had been released several months before. I drove across the river to the car dealership to meet him, buy the book, and have him autograph it for me. What an imposing man! He was 6'6", 250 pounds, and he looked as if he really had been through being shot eight times, stabbed seven times, and twice run over. Meeting him was an unforgettavle experience, but the idea that he probably murdered his wife Pauline changes things. Lordy.

That early morning ambush on 12 August 1967 didn't really make sense. Sheriff Pusser, who had many enemies, is a legend for having cleaned up the state line, and taken down some very evil criminals, who tried to kill him on numerous occasions. That first Walking Tall movie had a few true things in it. Just a few. The TBI isn't motivated by anything except trying to determine what happened in '67. It's terrible that Sheriff Pusser, fifty-one years after his own death in a Corvette, should fall under suspicion. But his own accounts don't hold up, and the ballistic evidence goes against him, too. Why wasn't this hashed out in 1967? Fifty-eight years is a long time for Pauline's brother to have to wait. The police work should have been done then.

So he shot himself in the face multiple times? How likely is that?

Wait a minute! All this talk about convicting someone who's no longer alive? But we can't even find the balls to go after those who stole elections, tried to kill President Trump, imprisoned J6 people for four years, etc., etc., etc.!
What a waste of time, energy, and money!

Sad to read this, my dad worked on the 1973 "Walking Tall" movie, I went to an early screening of the film and met Pusser after the screening. I was very impressed with the Sheriff, he was huge and intimidating, but seemed friendly. It was a "B" movie at best, but was cheap to make and was a hit and very profitable.

I'm sorry, but stuff like this doesn't impress me. Pusser isn't around to have his side shown, which would be required in any sort of a court case.
Some unknowns decide to "solve" an old case, and get themselves some publicity. I'm not going to buy it. Might be true, might be pure BS, and you and I can't tell from this distance, both in time and in space.

Who knows now. Since Pusser is dead he can’t defend himself. Could be true or not but it seems like just another cheap shot at an American hero.

He's dead, Jim. If the man was guilty his punishment is already in progress. How about focusing on finding the real killer of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Pearl?

This was 58 years ago. Is this a cold case? Was anyone arrested for this? What's driving this? One relative? How political is the DA? Betting the TBI has a full docket yet takes this on. No talk about anyone being arrested at the time. Maybe this is a cold case.

Seems that the sheriff did give his side of the story. It just took 50+ years to debunk it. And for the record, there is no statute of limitations for murder.
He hasn't been declared guilty, because there has been and will not be a trial. We are inferring that he probably killed his wife based on the new evidence. Regardless what we may think of the sheriff, a woman was killed 50+ years ago, and no one was brought to justice for the crime.

Re #5: Pusser's gunshot wound was non-vital, striking him in the cheek, the bullet missing his spinal cord and brain. The shot came from very close range, possibly point blank. It didn't come from another car. Where his chin and jaw used to be, there was wire mesh, and his mouth looked like an ugly little slit in his lower face. Had there been a carload of assassins gunning for him, they wouldn't have stopped after wounding him in the lower face. They would have shot him to pieces. I don't know why the police did essentially nothing on this case for fifty-eight years. Afraid? Pusser was a legendary policeman, but he appears to be the one who killed his wife. As others have said, there's no statute of limitations on murder. Two and a half generations of law enforcement failure should be corrected, if possible. Let the chips fall where they may.

Sorry for Pusser's granddaughter that she has to go through this, but given the statement's of Mrs. Pusser's siblings, it's obvious she doesn't speak for them. And as she herself attests, she wasn't around at the time; they were.

Let's see... A murder 60 or more years ago, of no cultural no historical importance is being investigated. The assumed perpetrator is long dead... Sure why not we've got plenty of time and money to waste and no present day crimes to solve nor citizens to protect.
That's the GARBAGE who run Nashville for you!
