President Donald Trump announced that he intends to issue an executive order that would include strict voter ID requirements and restrictions on mail-in ballots.
He said on Saturday that the executive order would call for the end of electronic voting systems and paper ballots as a replacement.
"Voter I.D. Must Be Part of Every Single Vote. NO EXCEPTIONS!" he wrote in a post on his platform Truth Social. "Will Be Doing An Executive Order To That End!!! Also, No Mail-In Voting, Except For Those That Are Very Ill, And The Far Away Military. USE PAPER BALLOTS ONLY!!!"

The US Constitution clearly provides that legislatures of various states determine the manner in which Presidential elections will be held. It would be foolish to argue against that. But the other side of the coin is that nothing in procedure can violate any provision of the US Constitution. The task is to convince five Justices that lack of voter id, ballot fraud from electronic voting and uncontrolled widespread use/misuse of mail in ballots is in fact disenfranchising avast majority of Americans. Sounds simple enough but could be tricky. I hope/predict a 5/4 decision.

Here comes a stampede of activist judges who know better than the president. You can hear the rumble of their hooves getting closer and the smell of sulfur is already in the air.

I just received a mail in ballot application from a Democrat Congressional candidate in Harris County, Texas. Anyone can go on line and print out an application. Minimal security would be to only allow election authorities to mail a ballot application. If printed online, at entry voter registration id information to get a ballot application. Ken Paxton, Tx AG, discussed this today, mentioning how the election was stolen in Harris County with mail in ballots, which were flooded everywhere, and there was drive through voting.

Sounds good if he can get away with it.

God speed, Mr. President.
I would be willing to go to the purple thumb method, if that is what it takes to get a fair vote in this country.

Many years ago, I when was active in the Republican Party. There was an old gentleman confined to a wheelchair who wanted to make sure he voted Republican. I had to travel to the old guy's house, bring a paper ballot, have him complete and sign it and be witnessed. What the H happened? Well we know don't we? It made it tougher to commit voter fraud and most of the dems' candidates wouldn't be able to get elected. Mail in ballots should never be accepted from other than military and government employees posted out of country. Others who travel out of country on election day can file for an absentee ballot.
It's amazing how their party is always going about Trump "ruining democracy" when they will turn in a hundred fake ballots from their long dead grandmother to "save it".

Yeah... I support the policy, but I don't think the President can do this with an executive order. This will require legislation presented and passed by the feckless Republicans. I have little faith they will support the President.

Probably not constitutional. The elections are left to the States in the Constitution.

I'm sure the Commiecrats will have no trouble finding a gaggle of black-robed minions to order a stop to this. I agree it should go through our mostly deadlocked, weak-minded and useless Congress.

Courts determined that poll taxes violated the USC.
They can determine the same about Democrat fraud with mail ins and no ID. It clearly disenfranchises the rest of us citizens who only vote once.

We cannot continue to use electronic voting. Despite protestations by Dominion and other voting machine companies, it is too prone to jiggering, which is why Biden was elected, in part. The other "part" is mail-in balloting. Both work to the advantage of cheaters.

I think much of the motivation of the President's executive orders is to shame Republican legislators into action. They are like trees. Providing shade and rustling leaves when the wind blows, but otherwise motionless. Trump demonstrates daily how useless career politicians really are.

Electronic voting can work if the voting machines are not connected to the Internet. The machines at the polls act as a giant calculator and the humans (hopefully moral and trustworthy) who work the polls tally the results. Our county (mostly conservative ) has this process and it works well. The problem is finding enough workers to man the polls for the 12-14 hour day.
Our state has limited early voting and it works. Unless you wish to stand in a two-hour line outside the polling place on the single Election Day (BTDT) waiting to cast your paper ballot, early voting and electronic tabulators are a much preferred option.

The absentee ballot program in the free state of Florida has worked safely and successfully over the years; it's a necessity for old folks who cannot travel to the polling locations. It's not the same as mail in ballots found in other states. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

We fill out paper ballots and put them through electronic ballot readers. Will that still be valid?
Almost guaranteed that lefty resistance judges will move to block this. Let the battle begin.
Btw, the problem isn't technology. It is dishonest people. They will find other ways to usurp power.

The Constitution says that voting takes place only on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. Period. This requires that you come to vote in person. All other forms of voting are not Constitutional.
For military and those out of the country, a pre-numbered ballot should be able to be cast.

Don't be too quick to despair over the Constitution, that says the States will determine elections. There have been Supreme Court decisions that have insured that a process in one State cannot be allowed to unfairly disenfranchise voters in another State. The crooked things that happened in the court system following the 2020 election are going to have a lot tougher time if they get resolved before the fall of 2026. Even some Democrats are coming around to the idea that cheating is bad for everyone, except the cheaters. The Constitution also has Federal rules like non-discrimination so the States power over elections is not absolute, just like most rights specified by the Constitution.

Our Constitution provided us with a tripartite system of government whereby the legislative branch passes laws, the executive branch enforces and executes the laws, and the judicial branch oversees disputes regarding the laws, with ultimate deference to the Constitution as the supreme law of the land. Separation of powers among the three branches is not an optional artifact of our Constitution but is a bedrock principle of our system of government. Throughout our nation's history, all presidents have used Executive Orders, which stimulated many instances where a president's power and authority were questioned by Congress and the Courts. The main constant when the limits of presidential power were questioned is whether or not the Executive Orders were issued in furtherance of executing public law and/or whether the president's orders were at odds with Congressional intent. When Congress and the president are on the same page, or the president's power is explicitly authorized by Article II, such orders are typically upheld.
