Are We Better Off Than We Were A Year Ago?

During the Oct. 28, 1980, presidential debate, Ronald Reagan closed by asking Americans if they were better off than they were four years earlier when Jimmy Carter was elected. If we asked that question today and changed the time element to a year, it would be obvious: Yes, we are better off. A little more than a year ago, Joe Biden suspended his reelection campaign and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to be his successor in the race against Donald Trump. Not that Harris would have been an improvement over Biden, but at least the country was rid of an addled career bumbler whose policies were a dead weight on the

Yes, but in the year before Biden can in and totally screwed things up, things were great. Everything was cheaper, especially gas and food, and the guy bagging my groceries was not in his 80s.

Trump Gets Dems to Make ‘Earthshaking,
Gobsmaking Concession’

Our contributor Bob Maistros noticed something yesterday that is worth repeating again and again. In the debate over tariffs, Maistros observed, Trump has gotten Democrats to make “an earthshaking, gobsmacking concession to common sense that cries out to be capitalized on.” To wit: that corporate taxes aren’t paid by corporations – they are ultimately passed down to employees and customers in the form of lower wages and higher prices. No matter what you think about Trump’s tariffs, winning this concession from Democrats must be celebrated.

A New Word To Make Him Look Bad — ‘Sneakflation’

In July, inflation came in lower than expected, which “defied fears of further price increases as a result of President Donald Trump’s tariffs.” That’s been happening a lot lately. So, what’s a Trump–hating news media to do? Admit their fear-mongering was wrong? Or, invent a new term to make even good news sound ominous? Over the weekend, CNN Business ran a story headlined: “‘Sneakflation’: How Trump’s tariffs are gradually raising costs for American consumers.” The article admits that “inflation has remained relatively tame” this year. “To this point, consumers have been mostly shielded from starkly higher prices.”

There are two things you can be sure of when it comes to Gavin Newsom. One is that he craves power. Two, he hates his fellow Californians. OK, the second one might be a stretch. But considering what he’s done to the people of his home state, that’s a fairly reasonable conclusion to draw. Newsom has been making headlines these days by “getting tough” with President Donald Trump in ways childish (X with posts written in all caps) and politically poisonous (promising to redraw district boundaries to kill off four or five of the state’s nine Republican seats). With that latter move, Newsom once again shows his disdain for Californians,

Inflation may have moderated, and the economy is showing signs of healthy growth, but the public remains deeply concerned about both, according to the latest I&I/TIPP poll. The poll found that fully 80% of those surveyed by I&I/TIPP say they are either “very” (45%) or “somewhat” (35%) concerned about inflation. Just 17% say they are not concerned. That’s despite the fact that inflation has averaged just 2.6% this year – which is significantly lower than any year under the Biden administration – and came in lower than expected in July. And while the economy grew a healthy 3% in the second quarter –

Weren’t we assured that Barack Obama went “into and out of office with not a whiff of scandal”? Yes we were. Former Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen told us so, as did many others. But it wasn’t true. There are many, the most recent a claim that Obama, and then Joe Biden, pressured bank executives to deny services to conservatives. It’s a serious charge that, like the Russia hoax, makes Watergate look like a sandbox squabble. Here’s what we’ve learned: Acccording to Fox Business, major bank executives said “they were under pressure by the Obama and Biden administrations to deny services to individuals and businesses for political reasons.”

It might be easy to dismiss the growing unrest in Britain, where crowds of fed-up and violently angry citizens are suddenly taking to the streets to end what they see as the tyranny of woke multiculturalism and horribly failed immigration policies. But right now, it looks as if the country could be nearing some kind of national breakdown or split, one with major global ramifications. Are we going a little too far in seeing a possible breakup or civil war? Not at all. The social pressures from a near non-stop influx of immigrants, legal and illegal, have been building for

“U.S. deficit grows to $291 billion in July despite tariff revenue surge.” – CNBC That and other headlines greeted the release of the latest monthly Treasury Department report last week, which showed that the July deficit was $47 billion higher than the year before – even though revenues came in $8 billion higher. Turns out that, despite all the protests, the screaming, and purple-hair-pulling and nose-ring-wiping about President Donald Trump’s “devastating cuts,” spending in July was $55.5 billion higher than it was a year ago. What’s more, there were jumps for outlays for agencies such as Veterans Affairs (up $3 billion

For those who can’t understand why Donald Trump was twice elected president, including the Republicans and conservatives who continue to impugn him, we have the answer: Trump is the response to three (yes, three) terms of Barack Obama. This country has never had a president like Trump. He doesn’t hold back, he can sometimes be crude, he sees no benefit in playing nice with people who want to destroy him (who also happen to overlap with Americans who want to take down their own country a notch or two because, in their perverted thinking, America was never great to begin

The controversial life and shocking death of financial fixer and child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein won a second of round of heavy media coverage after claims were made that Donald Trump knew Epstein. But Americans of all political stripes mostly agree on one thing: Epstein did not commit suicide, but was murdered, according to the latest I&I/TIPP Poll. The online national poll, taken by 1,362 adults, asked four questions total about Epstein’s controversial life. The poll has a margin of error of +/-2.7 percentage points. The first, and possibly most controversial, question asked: “Did Jeffrey Epstein die by suicide or was he murdered?”

Earlier this month, Customs and Border Protection recorded fewer than 7,832 illegal border crossings in July. That’s a staggering number when you consider that the 25-year average for that month is 76,000. Even more staggering is that this should never have happened. At least, not if you believed President Joe “Autopen” Biden. For four years straight, Biden and his minions told the American public either that the border was secure, or that the problem was impossible to fix due to Republican intransigence, or some combination of the two. Here, for the record, is a sampling:

Consumers see businesses as partners in transactions they have voluntarily chosen to take part in. They might not always be happy with the exchanges they make, but they generally understand that they are making a tradeoff that benefits both parties.  Policymakers, however, far too often see businesses as endless sources of money to fund their agendas.  On occasion, businesses will reach a breaking point. So they defend their interests, as some in Los Angeles are doing. A coalition has launched a June 2026 ballot measure to repeal the gross receipts tax, which is levied on business revenues, not profits (and is often passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices).

Florida’s immigration jail known as “Alligator Alcatraz” will probably be empty of detainees within days, a state official has said, indicating compliance with a judge’s order last week that the facility must close. The Republican governor Ron DeSantis’s administration appealed the order by federal court judge Kathleen Williams that the tented detention camp in the Florida Everglades, which attracted criticism for its harsh conditions, must be dismantled within 60 days. But in an email reported Wednesday by the Associated Press, Kevin Guthrie, executive director of the Florida department of emergency management, which operates the jail on behalf of the federal government, appeared to confirm it would be shuttered.

The black community’s disengagement from ordinary acts of civic responsibility is harming America as a whole, but mostly, it’s harming blacks. To save their communities, blacks need to reengage with what was once normative polite conduct across American society. To appreciate this point, consider the tales told by abandoned shopping carts and litter. [snip] Here’s the thing: Shopping carts and litter are just the most benign signs of conscientiousness and citizenship. The lack of such betrays itself in far more malignant ways as well, and we’re seeing that across the country, particularly in videos: Spirit Airlines airport counters. Six Flags parks.
