Here's a snippet from his Wikipedia bio: "After graduating from high school, Lovell attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison for two years, where he studied engineering under the United States Navy's "Flying Midshipman" program from 1946 to 1948. He would later credit the program for his ability to attend college, citing that he didn't otherwise have the money to attend. At Wisconsin, he played college football and pledged to the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity. He supplemented his meager Navy stipend by working at a local restaurant washing dishes and busing tables, and caring for the university's lab rats and mice on weekends." From there to test pilot, 2 Gemini flights, and 2 Apollo flights to the moon.

I met and got to talk to Capt. Lovell after the Apollo 13 movie came out. Incredible guy. Attentive to the person he is talking to, open to answer all questions and a well mannered gentleman. And always had a smile. He explained that the movie was actually very accurate except for two things. There was never a 'Gentlemen, what are your intentions' moment and there was nothing but teamwork between the three astronauts. No tension or drama except for the real life experience. I recommend one read his book as it is very insightful.

RIP brave adventurer, raise a Bravo Zulu on the masthead. Those were real heroes, and skilled pilots and problem solvers. I've met a few astronauts, not Capt. Lovell, and they have been really wonderful people. Having flown formation with one astronaut.....they are good pilots, too.

Jim Lovell was a neighbor of my aunt and uncle. We met him many times as kids at family events. He was a very "down to Earth guy" as my Dad used to say My parents both {WW/II) were in awe of his military service and we kids thought having flown on Gemini VII, Gemini XII, Apollo XVII was the coolest thing any one could ever do. My relatives moved in '98 so, we couldn't have known at the that time that two years, he would pilot the most famous Moon mission since Alan B. Shepard in 1961.

I would put Jim Lovell right next to Charles Lindbergh. Although Lovell had hundreds behind him in communications during his journeys, He commanded the first around the moon in 1968 (Christmas Eve), he was of the same caliber of person. He was the real spirit of America.

The cost for Texas Democrats abandoning their seats just went up exponentially. State House Speaker Dustin Burrows has ordered that all direct deposits be stopped for any member absent for the express purpose of denying a quorum. That stops the money flow to those who fled to Illinois and other blue states to prevent the Republican super majority from redistricting the state. As RedState reported, this battle has been ongoing since early August. Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) called for a special session to add up to five GOP-leaning seats to the congressional map, a move to combat gerrymandering in left-wing states

A Biden-appointed federal judge issued a nationwide injunction on President Donald Trump’s birthright citizenship order, arguing that the directive is likely to be found in violation of the Constitution. U.S. District Judge Deborah L. Boardman issued her opinion Thursday after agreeing to certify a class-action lawsuit from immigration rights group CASA. "The Court finds that the plaintiffs have shown they are entitled to a classwide preliminary injunction. The plaintiffs have established that they are likely to succeed on the merits of their constitutional claim because the Executive Order contradicts the plain language of the Fourteenth Amendment and conflicts with binding Supreme Court precedent,"

Washington — A divided federal appeals court on Friday granted the Trump administration's request to set aside a district judge's decision finding probable cause that some federal officials committed criminal contempt by violating an order to turn around planes carrying Venezuelan migrants bound for El Salvador. The 2-1 decision from a panel of judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit is a massive victory for the Trump administration, which has lambasted U.S. District Judge James Boasberg for overstepping his authority when he initiated criminal contempt proceedings in April.

HOUSTON, Texas — Harris County Commissioners Court censured County Judge Lina Hidalgo following an outrageous rant and political stunt. The judge appeared unhinged as she interrupted and argued with the county commissioners, refusing to follow the rules of decorum. Harris County commissioners voted 3-1 to censure Judge Hidalgo after what the Houston Chronicle kindly described as a “heated disagreement over a proposed tax increase to pay for early childcare programs. Urban Reform, a local government watchdog and public policy group, posted a video showing the latest in a series of rants by Hidalgo, the county’s chief executive officer.

The Israeli security cabinet approved a plan on Friday morning that will allow Israel to take military control of Gaza City, the first step in what could become a broader military operation to take control of the entire Gaza Strip. Israel’s goal in the expanded operation is to achieve decisive victory over Hamas while delivering humanitarian aid “outside of combat zones,” the council said in a statement after their ten-hour meeting. The cabinet’s five guidelines for ending the war include Hamas’s disarmament, the return of the remaining 50 hostages, 20 of whom are believed alive,

The Biden administration abused its power by turning the entire mechanism of the federal government into a Democratic voter mobilization campaign, according to newly unearthed White House documents viewed exclusively by The Post. The worst offender was FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, under the Department of Homeland Security, which was controlled for four years by Biden’s Machiavellian border buster Alejandro Mayorkas. When responding to an emergency or a natural disaster, FEMA employees were directed to make voter registration a “key priority.”
