U.S. Republicans continued on Wednesday a years-long effort to override a 2018 California law that bans the sale in the state of pork from pigs kept in tightly confined spaces, arguing in a House Agriculture Committee hearing that the law is overly burdensome to farmers.
Proposition 12, which also sets housing standards for veal and eggs sold in the state, was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2023 after a legal challenge by the pork industry.
Committee Chair Glenn Thompson has sought to limit the law's scope to California farmers, excluding farmers from other states who sell pork into California, in the next farm bill omnibus funding package

After the fall of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, Russia has scrambled to transfer military equipment to other areas, including eastern Libya. Experts question Russia’s long-term strategic goals and fear the expanded presence of mercenaries and military personnel could further destabilize Libya, Sudan and other nations in the region.
The Kremlin increasingly has used Al-Khadim air base, about 100 kilometers east of Benghazi, as a hub for conducting operations, supplying arms, and trafficking resources in and out of the restive Sahel region.

Paramount has wrapped up long-running negotiations that will bring the entirety of the South Park catalog to its Paramount+ streaming service, but it’s going to cost them.
The media company has agreed to pay the production company owned by South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker $1.5 billion for the global streaming rights for the next five years. HBO Max previously held the streaming rights to the show. Paramount has, instead, aired South Park original films on its streaming service.

The federal government has awarded a contract to build and operate a sprawling tent camp at Fort Bliss, an Army base in Texas, to serve as an immigrant detention center.
In the Trump administration’s latest move to vastly expand space for such detention, the work would turn the base in El Paso, with more than 1 million acres and an airport, into a deportation hub with 5,000 beds. That would make it the largest immigration detention facility in the country. An official for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement said that the agency “is indeed pursuing all available options to expand bedspace capacity.

The deal includes $200 million over three years for alleged discriminatory practices and $21 million to settle claims of antisemitic employment discrimination against Jewish faculty after the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attacks in Israel.
The White House called it the largest antisemitism-related settlement in U.S. history; Columbia confirmed the dollar amounts, but did not characterize the deal that way. A magistrate judge paused Kilmar Abrego Garcia's release from federal custody Wednesday, shortly after a separate judge ruled that Abrego, who was mistakenly deported in March to El Salvador, should be released while he awaits trial on human smuggling charges. U.S. Magistrate Judge Barbara Holmes in the Middle District of Tennessee ordered Abrego’s release from federal custody paused for 30 days or until further court order. “Abrego shall therefore remain in the custody of the United States Marshal pending further order,” she wrote.

Main Justice has announced the formation of a DOJ strike force to assemble and assess the evidence provided by Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, against former intelligence and government officials. This will require the DOJ to take a new approach, extracting information from multiple silos and then overlaying context to the content therein.
That’s essentially the new approach that DNI Gabbard has taken to break down the silo defenses, and this is the first time since I’ve been outlining how they self-protect that someone (DNI) has actually done the extracting and cross-referencing.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed President Donald Trump to fire members of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, a federal agency Congress set up to be independent of political pressures.
The justices, granting an emergency request filed by the Trump administration, blocked a Maryland-based federal judge’s ruling that reinstated Mary Boyle, Alexander Hoehn-Saric and Richard Trumka Jr., all of whom were appointed by President Joe Biden.
Without the three members, the five-member commission would for now lack the necessary quorum to fulfill its obligation to protect consumers from defective products.

GREENBELT, Md. - Kilmar Abrego Garcia's release from federal custody is on pause for 30 days after two earlier rulings ordered his release and blocked any deportation attempts. What we know:
On Wednesday, a U.S. district judge ordered that Kilmar Abrego Garcia be released from federal prison in Tennessee, upholding a magistrate judge’s ruling that sufficient evidence to prove that Abrego posed a public safety threat or was a flight risk was not shown.
In a separate order, another federal judge ruled that Garcia, a native of El Salvador, will remain in the United States, placing a 72-hour pause on any deportation attempts with a temporary restraining order,

I was a kid during the Watergate hearings in 1973 and 1974, after Richard Nixon's historic landslide re-election. I wasn't too interested in politics at that point - I was 12 - but my Dad made me sit and watch all the coverage with him, admonishing me that "this is history being made." This is the same man, mind you, who a year or two later made me read Aristotle's "Organon" - then quizzed me on it afterward. But I suspect my interest in politics began with Watergate, with that historic event.
Now, we're seeing an equally historic event. And the legal wranglings are beginning: On Wednesday

A federal judge in Washington, D.C., denied an appeal to overturn an earlier judge’s ruling allowing President Trump’s White House to restrict The Associated Press’ access to certain White House spaces.
The White House banned the AP from the press pool, a rotating group of reporters covering the president’s daily activities, earlier this year over its refusal to use “Gulf of America” instead of “Gulf of Mexico” in its widely-used Stylebook.
In June, the U.S. Court of Appeals temporarily blocked, an early April order from a district court judge that allowed the AP to regain its access to key White House spaces.

The Martin Luther King Jr. conspiracy has an eerie ring to it: as we’ve been told, the FBI et al. couldn’t find much on him, so they engaged in a non-stop effort to discredit, smear, and destroy his reputation. It sounds very much like what they tried and are still trying to do to Trump. The Deep State and FBI and counter-intel finally got their wish — King was assassinated. Barack Obama wants you to think he had nothing to do with the Russia collusion hoax, but that lie is unraveling fast. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has declassified a trove of documents that expose how the Obama administration faked the January 2017 intelligence report to falsely accuse Trump of colluding with Russia.
The evidence includes a 2020 House Intelligence Committee report, which confirms that despite no cyber interference from Russia, Obama pushed for a new intelligence community assessment (ICA) in late 2016 to shape a narrative that Putin was helping Trump. It was all part of a desperate attempt to undermine a duly elected president.

The astounding revelations were contained in a Sept. 18, 2020, House Intelligence Committee report that reviewed Russia’s influence on the 2016 contest and was declassified and made public Wednesday by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard released further evidence Wednesday morning, which she claims shows the Obama administration's direct involvement in the 2016 post-presidential election Russia hoax.
Gabbard, describing the plot as the "most egregious weaponization and politicization of intelligence in American history," posted a series of lies which have, in her view, been debunked by declassifying a 2020 House Intelligence Committee report.
The report was an assessment of how the Obama administration manufactured a January 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment, which portrayed Russia as having influenced the 2016 election in favor of Donald Trump.
That assessment was "false," Gabbard writes,

Judge Robin Rosenberg claimed in her ruling that the court’s “hands are tied,” with district courts typically not allowed to unseal grand jury testimony in most cases, the New York Times first reported.

Both the House Oversight Committee and the White House Counsel’s Office are currently investigating whether they are all legal, considering Ole Joe may not have even known that certain measures were being autographed in his name.
At least one senator doesn’t believe the pardons will stand up to legal scrutiny, and he wants to kill two birds with one stone: challenge them in court, and charge former Chief Medical Advisor to the President and serial fabulist Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Matt covered this Monday. In a shocking incident, a Delta pilot had to inform passengers and apologize for an aggressive maneuver he made to avoid a potential mid-air collision with a B-52 bomber.

"In recent days, a despicable and false blood libel has been raging around the world against the settlements, reminiscent of dark periods in Europe, and it has so far managed to deceive quite a few lovers of Israel in the US... No 'nationalist crime' event by Jews was carried out, no church was set on fire, and no cemetery was desecrated. Exactly the opposite

Among the climatically correct, nothing is more scandalous than describing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions as beneficial. You can be blacklisted from public forums, professional networking sites, and even be removed from your tenured university position as an accomplished scientist.
Nonetheless, the truth is this: CO2 is fundamental to the photosynthetic process by which plants make food for themselves -- and ultimately for us. Furthermore, the increase in atmospheric CO2 from industrial activity in the past century has helped vegetation over most of the planet to flourish. Also benefiting plants has been the relative warmth of recent decades.

President Trump appropriated the phrase “fake news” and applied it to dishonest media (print, networks, websites, podcasts, etc.).
Most fake news isn’t incorrect facts or flat-out lies; that’s way too obvious and easy to prove wrong. Instead, most fake news is done by omission — telling part of the story so the reader comes to a different conclusion or completely omitting the story so the reader has no idea that it ever happened. A great example of fake news by omission was during the 2020 election cycle, when most “mainstream” media refused to report on Hunter Biden’s laptop.

President Donald Trump made news on Tuesday night when he announced a historic trade deal with Japan, which followed news earlier in the day of a deal with Indonesia.Speaking to congressional Republicans at an event in the East Room at the White House, President Trump announced that he had just "signed the largest trade deal in history" with Japan."I think maybe the largest deal in history. They had their top people here, and we worked on it long and hard. And it's a great deal for everybody," Trump said, noting that there was "a lot of money" flowing into the U.S.

The Trump administration has been pursuing, on two fronts, the critical objective of fixing America's broken education system.
One, an executive order by President Donald Trump, issued shortly after he assumed office, is to dismantle the Department of Education. Outright closing of the department is only possible by an act of Congress. However, the president is moving to accomplish the same objective administratively by closing down offices and major staff elimination. The Supreme Court recently upheld the president's authority to do this.

We thought it was a betrayal of Los Angeles fire victims that the local government slow-rolled the building permit process to wait out property owners so the state could replace their homes with "low-income" apartments. It turns out, however, that the betrayal has just gotten worse.
We learn this week, thanks to the great work of a lone reporter at a small Southern California publication called Circling the News, that a whopping $100 million donated to help fire victims isn't making its way to actual fire victims.

Barack Obama’s team is in full damage control mode after Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard declassified and released evidence that Obama and his top officials in his administration knowingly fabricated intelligence to push the false narrative that Trump was compromised by Russia—an operation designed to delegitimize his election and kneecap his ability to govern. On Tuesday, Barack Obama released a statement through a spokesman in response to the recent release of Russiagate documents implicating the former president in the effort to delegitimize Trump’s presidency.

As RedState reported, the judges of the U.S. District Court in New Jersey voted to oust Alina Habba from her role as the top federal prosecutor in the state. That came after House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) publicly demanded the move, claiming she was a "woefully unqualified political hack," leading the Department of Justice to decry what they saw as a politically motivated decision.Because Habba has not been confirmed by the U.S. Senate, her appointment had a 120-day expiration, with the district court judges in question having the ability to keep her in the position. Instead, they refused and hand-selected her replacement, Desiree Grace,

There was a theme to the Obama years: say one thing, mean another, and spin it all as “historic.” This week, Barack Obama trotted out that same tired formula—this time in response to the bombshell DNI report declassified last Friday. His statement? “Nothing in the document issued last week undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully manipulate any votes.”
Cute. But irrelevant.
Because no one—certainly not the DNI—claimed Russia manipulated votes. That’s not the point. The actual claim from the Director of National Intelligence—now Tulsi Gabbard—is that Obama-era officials manufactured a narrative, suppressed contradictory intelligence,

15 months. That is how much time we have left until Arizona can elect a new governor, and it couldn’t come soon enough.
Since taking office in 2023, Katie Hobbs has been a complete disaster. The heights of her corruption have certainly been well documented. From her illegal use of public resources to solicit money for her inauguration, to an alleged pay-to-play schemebetween Hobbs and an Arizona group home that donated to her inauguration, to shelling out $700,000 to a company owned by the brother of the now-former Office of Tourism Director to create a new state logo,

Less than a month after Donald Trump’s intervention against the Iranian nuclear program illustrated the depth of the de facto U.S.-Israel alliance, the administration has reportedly become frustrated with its counterparts in Jerusalem.
Axios reporter Barak Ravid recently revealed that Trump’s aides and perhaps even Trump himself (Ravid could not confirm as much) have been aggravated by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s continued prosecution of the conflicts around Israel’s borders, particularly last week’s strikes on targets inside Syria.
One unnamed Trump official said Netanyahu’s “trigger finger is too itchy.” Another called the prime minister a “madman” who “bombs everything all the time.” ...

As Jim Geraghty, Noah Rothman, Charlie Cooke, and Jeff Blehar have detailed at length, there were ample reasons for CBS to pull the plug on Stephen Colbert’s tenure as host of The Late Show, and to go a step further and kill the program. Those reasons were commercial (Colbert was losing the network some $40 million a year, his still-substantial audience was a fraction of what he used to draw, and its average age of 68 made it an undesirable market for advertisers), artistic (the shrill, one-note politics and parade of partisan guests),

US Attorney General Pam Bondi promptly fired Alina Habba’s replacement after a group of district court judges voted to oust Habba as interim US Attorney of New Jersey.
A group of federal judges on Tuesday declined to extend Alina Habba’s term as interim US Attorney of New Jersey after Democrat Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries launched a pressure campaign to oust her.
Alina Habba’s term as interim US Attorney expires on Friday at 11:59 pm.
Hakeem Jeffries called on federal district court judges appointed by Obama and Biden to remove Alina Habba over her decision to indict Rep. LaMonica McIver.

The Standard Chartered Bank sanctions evasion case, now in court in the US Second Circuit, found at least $9.6 billion of illegal payments by the bank to Iranian and Hezbollah entities.
The case implicates NYAG Letitia James and the Federal Reserve for ignoring billions of these illicit payments and ignoring Treasury sanctions designations. Maximum Pressure is not being enforced because of the failures of the Fed and the NYAG.
At least $9.6 billion of specifically identified illicit payments were made by SCB from its NYC branch to OFAC and known terrorist names.

Recently Al Qaeda/ISIS took over Syria. This development was greeted with cheers from world leaders who had been working toward this very goal from the Arab Spring days. Now, they assured us, Syria would become a democratic paradise full of human rights.
Three lessons here.
1. Letting Turkey put Al Qaeda in charge of Syria was a bad idea.
2. This is the Islamic norm. And anywhere they take power, this is what will happen to non-Muslims. Let's not let it happen to us.
3. When Israel prevents a genocide, it's accused of genocide.

The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) quietly updated its eligibility rules to prevent men from participating on women’s teams, in compliance with an executive order from President Donald Trump.
The committee changed the rule on Monday, amending its “Athlete Safety Policy” to imply that males will be prevented from participating in women’s divisions. The document did not use the word “transgender” in any of its 27 pages.
“The USOPC will continue to collaborate with various stakeholders with oversight responsibilities, e.g., IOC, IPC, NGBs, to ensure that women have a fair and safe competition environment consistent with Executive Order 14201,” the updated version said.

An appellate court ruled the Trump administration can move forward with ending temporary deportation protections for thousands of Afghan and Cameroonian nationals.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is allowed to end the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for roughly 10,000 Afghans and Cameroonians while a court challenge against the move continues to play out in court, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Monday. The court determined that while CASA — an immigration advocacy group suing DHS — has a plausible case, there is not enough evidence to block the TPS phaseout while the court challenge continues.

President Trump announced Tuesday that his administration had wrapped up a massive trade agreement with Japan, two weeks after threatening the US ally with 25% tariffs
“We just completed a massive Deal with Japan, perhaps the largest Deal ever made. Japan will invest, at my direction, $550 Billion Dollars into the United States, which will receive 90% of the Profits,” Trump, 79, wrote on Truth Social.
“Perhaps most importantly, Japan will open their Country to Trade including Cars and Trucks, Rice and certain other Agricultural Products, and other things. Japan will pay Reciprocal Tariffs to the United States of 15%.”
