President Donald Trump announced Wednesday afternoon, July 16 that Coca-Cola has agreed to use real cane sugar for its soda beverages sold in the U.S. "I have been speaking to Coca-Cola about using REAL Cane Sugar in Coke in the United States, and they have agreed to do so," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "I’d like to thank all of those in authority at Coca-Cola. This will be a very good move by them — You’ll see. It’s just better!" USA TODAY has reached out to Coca-Cola for confirmation on the president's announcement. A spokesperson for the company told Reuters the Atlanta-based company will share details on new offerings

Comments:

Coke with cane sugar aka Mexican Coke IS better than Coke with high fructose corn syrup. Get corn out of our gasoline, too, while you're at it.

HFCS has been in Coke and Pepsi since 1984. No product that formerly contained sugar was improved by switching over to corn sweetner, although the switch did bolster Archer Daniels Midland's stock price. I well remember the 6 1/2 ounce returnable bottles of Coke that cost a nickel when I was very young. It would be nice to see that drink available again. And it took Trump to encourage its return. More winning.

The President of the United States needs to spend his limited time and even more limited political capital on things that actually are his business. Hectoring us about what we eat, drink, and smoke is not one of those things. And on this issue I am a disinterested observer: As a Type 1 diabetic I can't drink Coca-Cola in any form. In fact, I even avoid Coke Zero on airplanes because I can't reliably tell the difference between it and regular Coke by taste alone. Like our great but sometimes intrusive President, I drink Diet Coke, and that's just one of the many things we agree on.

High fructose corn syrup is in everything, everything we eat, drink and brush our teeth with. This started in the '70's, along about the time big weight gains in everyone started. I switched to Tab back in the '80's. Then they stopped making it and Diet Coke was born. Been drinking that since then.

Re #11, I was a long time Diet Coke drinker, too. Have you tried Coke Zero? My wife and I like it a little bit more than Diet Coke. Tidbit.....in the former Soviet countries there is no Diet Coke it is Coke Light. Seemed to be slightly different, I think perhaps they may use cyclomates, banned in the USA, instead of whatever they use in Diet Coke, probably aspartame. It was shown that if you fed a rat 12,000 diet drinks with cyclomates per day for years it had an increased chance of developing cancer. So cyclomates were banned in the USA....not in the rest of the world. Personally, I hardly ever drank over 100 cans per day. /s off

# 14 - I remember the big scare tactic about Diet Coke causing cancer in lab rats. Then somewhere down the line, it was found out that they were given the equivalent of umpteen thousand Diet Cokes a day. Just like you said. Diet Coke came out in 1982, just looked it up, and I've drank two a day, occasionally more, every day since then. I'm 77 and still going. So many scare tactics out there now I pretty much don't believe any of them anymore.

# 19 - Louisiana grows sugar cane. Has for a long, long time. Lots of fields in Port Allen, Brusly, Plaquemine. I grew up around there. In season, we'd usually get a piece of a stalk and chew the sweet center. Can't swallow it tho, have to spit it out. But sugar cane grows just fine in many places here in the US.

Re #19, 21: There are also extensive sugar cane fields west of Miami. On the way to the Keys from the Tampa Bay area, you drive through the sugar cane fields before you get to Key Largo. A nutritionist friend once told me that whether you're consuming sugar or corn syrup, it's sucrose. Yeah, that's correct, but the two are not the same. And they do not taste the same. Sugar is always better. Use it in moderation.

Adding to #14: In Europe it's called Coca Light, and it tastes nothing like Diet Coke. It has a lemony flavor. Last time I checked, the UK had real Diet Coke, however. Other interesting Diet Coke experiences: 20 plus years ago, mainland China and Hong Kong had different formulas. HK used the British formula with aspartame. PRC used saccharin. You could tell the difference by smell without even tasting. Meanwhile all Canadian Diet Coke is sweetened with aspartame, both fountain drinks and bottles/cans. US bottles and cans have aspartame but a different artificial sweetener in its fountain drinks for Diet Coke. I at least can taste the difference. And #14 is right that Coke Zero tastes a lot more like real Coca-Cola to me, which is why I stay away from it unless I pour it myself. Truthfully, having been forced to give up real Coca-Cola 40 plus years ago, I prefer Diet Coke's flavor now.

I don't feel a lot of glee about any politician strong arming companies to alter their recipes. If these substances are as harmful as purported, Congress should get off its useless rear end and pass laws. But that scenario went out the window decades ago.

There's a meme that resurfaces on social media from time to time. It says, "If a Democrat from the 1960s were to appear today, he'd be considered a conservative. If a Democrat from today were to be transported to the 1960s, he'd be considered a dangerous lunatic." Truer words were never spoken. Once upon a time the Democrat party defended blue-collar workers, the poor, and the middle class. Not that long ago BJ Clinton and Hussein Obama spoke about the necessity of securing the border. And very recently a rallying cry on the Left was, "No one is above the law." Times have changed. Quinnipiac now tells

But that is apparently exactly what he’s doing now, with the help of the California legislature—and Donald Trump’s special missions envoy is furious. Richard Grenell accused Newsom of lying about his fire recovery goals. Newsom had scoffed, “The claim that the Governor wants to bulldoze fire victims’ neighborhoods and replace them with ‘affordable housing’ is absurd.” But he just announced over $100 million for building low-income housing in the area of the Palisades and other burned areas, as a bill moves through the California

America is in crisis, with the left battling the ascendant right, a clash of visions between a socialist nightmare in which America becomes either a feudal, feral combination of California and a communist college campus or we re-make it into something like the glorious, golden country it once was. How does all this end? Leftists in America— and the Democrats are a leftist party that is eagerly embracing admitted communists— seem to be under the impression that normal patriotic Americans have no right to engage in their own self-governance. That’s unsustainable. We’re not giving up our self-determination. The question is whether America resolves this peacefully,

Four hours of gaslighting and cursing. I've watched most of Newsom's latest venture in podcast politics in a four-hour-long Shawn Ryan Show interview. It was a curse-word-filled apologia of his time as governor and how everything is great in LaLa Land. Here are some highlights. Gavin Newsom is in favor of gun control, but he's not. He presided over and encouraged the dumbest decriminalization of felonies, prompting massive theft rings to prey upon shop owners, causing a mass exodus of people and retail outlets, but California is one of the toughest on crime. He's not running for president, but he is.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has been boldly — and annoyingly — trying to make a case to Democrats to be the party's presidential nominee in 2028. Newsom knows that he has to get a head start because he's attempting to do something that is nigh on impossible in the current Dem electoral climate:
