Burke and cohorts Jimmy Demaret, Dave Marr and others were part of Houston's Memorial Park golf course's big money gambling crew. The first tee was usually a throng but the crew had a standing daily tee time and everyone else made way for the royalty. A golden age of another sort. I could go on about Houston golf, let me just say RIP Mr. Burke.

Hunter education, archery and shooting-related school programs amount to “training in the use of a dangerous weapon,” so money for them should be cut, say federal officials. That worries Brad Smith, who coaches the Cheyenne East High School clay target shooting team. Although his team doesn’t get any money from the school district, it is promoted through the school, and losing that support would hurt, he told Cowboy State Daily.

As much as it’s reported that the world is going through a transition away from fossil fuels to wind and solar energy, the data doesn’t support it. The International Energy Agency released its 2023 Coal Market Update on Thursday, which shows that global coal consumption in 2022 rose by 3.3% to a record 8.3 billion tons. While the use of coal in European countries and the United States has declined, those reductions are offset by increases in Asian countries, primarily India and China.

Any evaluation of the Biden administration's policy towards the Iranian regime (and towards the Palestinians) reveals a failure: the deadly Western miscalculation that "being nice" will be reciprocated. In the culture of the Middle East, that simply does not work. Instead, one is looked on as a gullible sucker or juicy "mark," like a jolly drunk at a strip club. As Osama bin Laden pointed out, especially for his region, "When people see a strong horse and a weak horse, by nature they will like the strong horse." That is the Trump campaign, the former president himself and think of the America they’re trying to create. You would have a president who is beyond the reach of the law,

I don’t want to be anybody’s vice president. That is off the table,” Haley told diners at a restaurant in Amherst, New Hampshire, according to a Politico reporter who overheard the comments. The intrigue over who Donald Trump will pick to be his vice president on the 2024 Republican ticket he's presumed to be leading is growing. A recent report placed Rep. Elise Stefanik, a moderate House member from New York, near the top of the list. Then there's Nikki Haley, who has reportedly been under consideration for a while, even as she remains in the primary race. On that front, when the Trump campaign had a chance to put the Nikki Haley issue to bed once and for all, they chose not to, instead only ruling out Vivek Ramaswamy. What that says is that the former president's closest advisors

Why is Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY) tasked with delivering the attack lines or mounting any defense of this administration’s policies? He failed. Now, this man decides to pick a fight with Josephine Dunn, who lost her daughter to the ongoing fentanyl crisis, during an impeachment hearing for DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. A hospital system in Denver warned local lawmakers this week that it is on the brink of collapse due to financial pressures created by the migrant crisis. Denver Health recorded some 20,000 visits from 8,000 Central American migrants in 2023 for everything from dental emergencies to mental health counseling, according to the Denver Post. Denver estimates more than 36,000 illegal immigrants, most of whom are Venezuelan, have arrived in the city since December 2022. Roughly half of those migrants have decided to put down roots in the city. The influx created a $2 million loss for the hospital system last year, following a $35 million loss

The nation’s ruling class holds deeply authoritarian opinions widely divorced from the rest of the American electorate, finds a survey out this week. It found nearly 60 percent of American “elites” think there is too much individual freedom in America. Meanwhile, nearly 60 percent of registered voters have the exact opposite opinion, reporting the United States has too much top-down control, limiting liberty. The study from the Committee to Unleash Prosperity found ruling class opinions on climate policies were particularly harsh and despotic. More than two-thirds of the 1 percent support rationing vital energy and food sources in an attempt to control the globe’s weather.
