The bipartisan sponsors of a new bill to target chronic absenteeism want to model a piece of advice from novelist Jean Shepherd: “In God we trust, all others pay cash.”
In a proposed two-year pilot program, Republican state Rep. Bill Seitz and Democratic Rep. Dani Isaacsohn, both of Cincinnati, said cash transfers would be sent to kindergarteners and ninth graders. [SNIP] According to the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, prior to the pandemic, kindergarteners considered chronically absent – missing 10% or more of a school year for any reason – registered at 11%. In the last school year, the rate ballooned to 29%.

Is there absolutely no effort to establish accountability in this country? If you want kids to go to school, ensure that the parents are responsible! You don’t pay truant children anymore than you pay criminals not to be criminals! You punish the guilty, and in this case, that would be the parents!

What kind of insanity is this? Taxpayers already pay a minimum of $6000 per year to put the little urchins through 12 years of mostly worthless schools, now you want us to pay them to go? Shut the damned things down and make everybody happy. The public school system clearly is not functioning.

My dear late husband used to say, "Stupidity reigns."
It's even more appropriate 20 years later.

Wouldn't it be more effective for all to keep these truant students out of school, as they are the most likely to disrupt the classes when they are present. The legislature must not pass this bill, because Governor DeWine would probably sign it.

That ought to do it. Then they could pay for some of the items they shoplift. Right?

Tell Dani and Bill to pay these kids out of their own pockets. I’m taxed up to my eyebrows because of the stupid people in government. That includes local county state and federal “elected” brainless officials.

I started to write "if they don't show up, flunk them out" but then I realized most of them will end up on welfare with or without a "diploma".

Pay them to attend some of the most vile institutions in the land? Public schools are not for children. They haven't been for over 20 years. They are the place where children learn to subvert their individuality to the government. The government will feed, clothe, and soon, house children to relieve "parents" of undue burdens and strains. It is the fortunate few that get a legitimate education, and they usually come from intact, two parent homes. For the rest, it's sheer will or luck.

Isn't this like a Welfare for going to school payment? Sorry, but you should not be paid for things that you are supposed to be doing for free! How about instead of paying kid to go to school, we bill the parents for the days missed from school. Take the per pupil funding amount and divide it by the number of school days. That can be the per-diem for each school day. When little Johnny skips school, the parents are billed that amount. The money can be paid by them, deducted from their checking accounts, monthly welfare checks or disability payments. If this is not available the payment can be deducted from their State or Federal Tax return. Pretty sure Johnny will be at school everyday once his parents are hit in the pocketbook for his truancy.

Switch to school vouchers. That is paying them to go to school. Then, they can use them or not.

Chronic absenteeism? Suspend those students. Not allowed to makeup work missed. Flunk them. They obviously don’t care, so don’t waste our taxpayer dollars.

Beyond a reasonable number of absences, if a child will not appear in class, require a parent to do so. Excuse the parent upon payment of a stiff fee, which will in no circumstance go to the racketeer heading the local teachers union.

For FY2018 they spent $13,027 per student in Ohio. I cannot imagine it has gone anywhere but up from there. Most current numbers for Texas FY2024 are $9,871. Property Tax here in Texas funds the school system. Thanks to Governor Abbot and the Texas Legislature the value of my home increased while my tax bill went down about $1000. And the teachers got a raise. Win, Win, Win!!! We are also a recapture district which means a portion of our school taxes go to other disadvantaged districts. Just wish they would let the money follow the student so there is more choice. Would have saved us a bunch of money. There are some great charter schools that were not available for my kids that are publicly funded but much better at educating the kids than the public schools.

Or, send refunds to the taxpayers for every chronically absent student.

Go to school; or be placed on a work gang. Call it 'Community Service'. Once a month, offer the chance to return to school. But recidivism will be harshly punished. These payments sound like a brand new form of reparations.

Oh hell no. If you and your parent(s) are too stupid, primitive and lazy to take advantage of free education - go forth and be an illiterate, innumerate cow. People risked death to educate their children in other times. Thanks for honoring their sacrifice. /s
