The Texas Supreme Court has rejected calls to allow Texans to vote on whether the state should become independent. The Texas Nationalist Movement had submitted a petition to the Republican party demanding the question be posed on the March primary ballot. But it was rejected by Texas Republican Party Chair Matt Rinaldi, despite being well over the 97,709 signatures required to get a vote added. The petition was submitted with 139,456 signatures.[SNIP] 'Well, we did everything we could but the Supreme Court of Texas screwed us,' Texas Nationalist Movement lawyer Paul M Davis wrote.

I admit, I didn't read the article, as I refuse to let the DM litter my screen with ads, but the question should be on the November ballot so both parties could vote on it.

Why not allow it? It sends a strong message, even if it wouldn't stand in the U.S. Supreme Court.

Idiotic idea. Why should Texans or residents of any state be allowed to vote for the office of the US President if they don't want to be citizens in the first place?

Why does the Texas Supreme Court have a say in whether it can be on the ballot? These courts are ruling on way too many things that the citizens have already expressed their desires on. The Courts, at all levels, have gained way too much power.

A Jewish man who lost family in the October 7 attacks was jeered at by protestors who made pig noises and pretend horns while at a San Francisco council meeting. The incident occurred on January 8 at a San Francisco Board of Supervisors hearing scheduled the day before a vote on a resolution to call for a ceasefire in Gaza. In a moving speech to the Board the man described how his first cousins were killed at Kibbutz Be'eri on October 7. 'This resolution does one thing, it fuels antisemitism and hatred, as exemplified in this room right now' the man tells the meeting.

The Department of Justice wants the Supreme Court to stop Texas from blocking federal Border Patrol agents from a portion of the U.S.-Mexico border near Eagle Pass, southwest of San Antonio. Texas state troopers on Thursday fenced off a public park in Eagle Pass, prompting objections from city officials — and the new filing from the Justice Department. The Justice Department said armed Texas National Guard members have blockaded access roads to the area, which "effectively prevents" Border Patrol agents from getting to or monitoring a roughly 2.5-mile stretch of the border.

New York and Texas public schools are displaying maps in classrooms that replace Israel with a a united Palestine. One map, hanging on a classroom wall at PS 261 Zipporiah Mills in Brooklyn since at least April, is a colorful display of the Arab World with popular landmarks. However, where Israel and Palestine would usually be is one shaded area labeled 'Palestine', with no mention of Israel at all. The classroom is used by Palestinian-American teacher Rita Lahoud to teach pre-kindergarten to fifth grade students about Arabic culture and language. She teaches a program funded by the Qatar Foundation International, a nonprofit owned by the Qatari Government.

St. Paul, Minnesota, seated four new City Council members on Tuesday, and now has an entirely female slate of Council members. Additionally, all seven women are under age 40, and six of the seven are women of color. Anika Bowie, Saura Jost, Hwa Jeong Kim and Cheniqua Johnson became the Council's newest members. Rebecca Noecker, Mitra Jalali and Nelsie Yang all won reelection in their districts. All seven members are Democrats but ran on a nonpartisan ballot. Prior to Tuesday, two of the seven council members were male. St. Paul uses ranked-choice voting, meaning voters must rank their preferred candidates.

A transgender woman running for the Ohio House was rejected from the ballot for not listing her former name. Vanessa Joy was the only Democrat seeking the Ohio House 50th District seat, which forms a U-shape in Stark County and includes Canal Fulton, East Canton, Massillon and Minerva. Joy had enough valid signatures to qualify. Problem was, Stark County's four-member Board of Elections found a flaw in her petitions because she legally changed her name in 2022 and did not include her former name on the petitions she'd circulated, as required by law.

Mariah Carey's iconic festive hit, All I Want For Christmas Is You, has won millions of fans across the world with its feel-good lyrics and music video. The 1994 track shoots to the top of the charts every Christmas - with Carey proudly dubbing herself 'the Queen of Christmas' and making an estimated $3million off the track every year. However, the fraught backstory to the track means it has lost a touch of its festive sparkle - as Carey was slammed in December 2022 by the song's co-writer Walter Afanasieff for allegedly 'spinning a tall tale' about composing the track as a child on a keyboard.

Republican presidential primary candidate Nikki Haley once seemingly parroted a talking point used by Democrats that suggests climate change is partially to blame for mass immigration to the United States and other countries. In January 2017, Haley went before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to be confirmed as ambassador to the United Nations (UN) in then-President Donald Trump’s administration. Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR), in a written question, asked Haley about so-called “climate refugees,” as Democrats claim that mass immigration to the U.S. and other countries is partially due to global warming’s destroying crops, conditions, and communities in certain regions of the world. No-show bus rides, fatigue, and illnesses are making it hard for some migrants housed in Floyd Bennett Field tents to send their children to school, parents told The Post. During school hours this week, The Post observed at least 15 children skipping class outside the city’s controversial mega-tent shelter in southeast Brooklyn, where roughly 1,900 migrants are housed. Despite the city forking over $625,000 this year for buses to take students from the isolated national park to a subway stop, parents blamed missing shuttles for their kids losing out on class time.

If you thought that Joe Biden is a prolific pusher of malarkey, it seems that his wife, Jill, wants to challenge him for the crown. She would have to go a ways, but she's making a big effort with a comment that she made to the audience on the "Morning Joe" show. We already reported on her interview with Mika Brezinski which was just a horrible effort to sell Joe Biden for his re-election. But that isn't going over very well.
