Electric vehicle owners in the Chicago area have not been able to charge their overpriced method of transportation in the bitter cold this week, leaving scenes of dead electric cars littered across public charging stations.
It turns out buying a worthless car to virtue-signal for the environment has unintended consequences.
Fox Chicago reported Monday the charging stations have turned into electric car graveyards over the past two days as temperatures in the Windy City and its suburbs have dipped to the negative double digits.
One man, Tyler Beard, to the outlet he had been trying to recharge his Tesla at an Oak Brook Tesla supercharging station since Sunday afternoon.

New info for me. Apparently in the extreme cold a Tesla cannot charge at all, even at their hugely expensive supercharger charging stations.
One guy spent three hours, got zero charge.

I wonder if the electric vehicle market will drop even farther in Chicago after this.

It's not if this was not known by those in charge.

When the big battery goes to zero, it apparently draws down a little secondary battery. The secondary has to be repowered with a standard battery charger, to light up the electronics, so that the supercharger can be electronically connected to the big battery.

Feel good story of the day.
Way back in November of 2012, I was on a business trip in the UK and caught a couple of guys on the radio recounting their experimental trip from London to Edinburgh trying out an EV. What should have been about a five hour trip took them two days for the same reasons stated in this article. It was bitter cold and not only did it take them hours and hours to charge their car, but they found that they couldn’t run the heater while driving or the battery would drain in no time. That was all I needed to hear to know that I would never contemplate buying an EV. I grew up in Florida - I don’t do cold.

Catch 22: Encourage greenhouse gasses in order to heat up the planet so the batteries will be warm enough to charge so we can combat climate change.

# 8 - I did not know this about two batteries. You mean they need a regular battery to charge the new fangled battery to run the car on electricity? That is hilarious. And people actually buy these things! Unbelievable.

What would be the comments if this was something that happened to a combustion engine vehicle which only had limited use and function?
So, at best, this type of vehicle is a niche player for rich people who want to project they are "doing something", right?

Stupid and ignorant have a difference.
one can choose to be and remain ignorant.
one has to realize they are stupid before they can progress to ignorant.
I wonder how many would have bought EVs without taxpayer subsidies

Well, at least the EV suckers . . . er . . . owners don't have to worry about car jackets or "Kia Boyz!!"
I had a car that I inherited from my grandfather when I was 18. It was a '65 Chrysler Newport and drove like a dream. One day, in my town in the "superboonies" of Chicago, we had a HIGH of -26°F, with a windchill of -92°. Everything was shut down because of the dangerous temps. My car was parked out on the street and I was worried it would be towed. So I bundled up and got in my car and cranked it. She groaned and grumbled, but she started up. I drove around the block on square tires until everything warmed up and then parked her in her spot off the street. Needless to say, this wouldn't have happened if she had been an EV.

Every gasoline engine I have will fire up at 0º F.
Electric is not ready for primetime. These batteries aren't either. I like Musk, but he's wrong about lithium batteries being the future power supply.

The biggest suckers are the taxpayers who are supplementing the cost of those EVs.
The government is propping up the sales, but they don't care about maintenance or fuel.
Just wait until that big battery goes bad and you have to pay full price to replace it. Resale value is zero.

Obviously, people who bought their glorified golf carts, didn't do their homework. Lived in MT fir 33 yrs and subzero Temps were the norm. When I worked for the state, they gave us a Honda hybrid that turned into a parking lot ornament at -20. A full on EV in cold country, is for fools.
