The family featured in the Hollywood blockbuster “The Blind Side” fired back Monday at ex-NFLer Michael Oher’s claims they swindled him, calling the allegations “insulting” and hurtful. (snip) “We didn’t make any money off the movie,” Touhy said. “Well, Michael Lewis, the [author of the book on which the movie was based] gave us half of his share. Everybody in the family got an equal share, including Michael. It was about $14,000, each.” Tuohy sold his conglomerate of fast-food franchises for $200 million and took affront to the idea that he would want to profit off of Oher.

It sounds like Oher might need money, and was trying to shake down the Touhy family. The truth will come out if this ever goes to court, but I doubt the Touhys made millions off of that movie. They didn't write the book, so the story wasn't theirs to sell. At most, they might have gotten a fee as "consultants" to the movie, but that's a one-time payment. I doubt they got a share of the profits, and anyway, given Hollywood accounting, the movie probably only made a small profit if it made one at all. The $300+ million is gross receipts, not profits. Given that Sean Touhy sold his Taco Bell franchises for $200 million, I'm skeptical that he somehow cheated Oher. Anything in that area would be chump change by comparison.

Mr. Oher is retired NFL and has done well ever since. There is no evidence so far that he is in need financially. The legal papers I read so far seem to reasonably request a full and transparent accounting of all the monies received of the Tuohys as a result of or related to the movie which seems to have catapulted the family’s fortunes quite a bit. If all was honest as the Tuoys are saying, all will be fine.

OK, let's be real here. A rich white family stepped up to help a disadvantaged black teen. They housed him, fed him, paid for tutors, and provided a way for him to go to college. They weren't clairvoyant so they had no idea that he'd finish school, go to the NFL, avoid injuries, and somehow become a "cash cow" they could milk to augment their already high income. They didn't write the book or produce the movie. According to their side of the story, the writer shared one of his points from the movie deal with them and it was split equally among all of the family members involved, including Michael. It amounted to $60-70K each in total. Michael earned more than $16 million during his NFL career but I've seen nothing about where it all went. Now that Mr. Touhy has cashed out his business interests and amassed a tidy fortune, suddenly Big Mike realizes that he had been oppressed by all that "whiteness" he was subjected to (getting to school on time, completing assignments, showing up for practice, putting in the hard work, etc.) and needs some *reparations*.
As to the conservatorship, the family says they had to establish it because they couldn't adopt him because he was too old. Maybe they're lying, maybe they got bad legal advice, but it appears that Michael wasn't living on the streets while in the NFL so his salary was going somewhere to provide him a lifestyle.
In the end, it appears that no good deed goes unpunished.

I don't follow football, but did see the movie, so my limited grasp wonders; why the Touhys never rescinded the conservator contract after Mike made it in the NFL? They were portrayed as a wealthy Christian family with all the right feels to help this young man escape poverty & the risk of criminal lifestyle pulling at him. Yes, they were shown to be caring & supportive in guiding him to his educational and athletic best. I'm guessing Mike made it thru college ok? Ohr's name didn't come up on sports news like the crime prone Cincinnati Bengals nearby (Joe Mixon in deep doo-doo now) Seems there is no adulthood when the child turns 18 or 21 & has to stand on their own to manage their careers, finances & responsibilities. Sad that the media is once more piling on a racist agenda to this story. Hope it ends without permanent damage to whatever good was there. (Golden Rule)

As the Bible says in I Timothy 6:10, "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil."
If Oher wants to extract money from those who made money from his story, why doesn't he sue Warner Bros. Pictures, which pocketed $309M from the movie?
At some point in his career, Oher was no doubt making more money annually than the Touhy family... so, was he obligated to pay them something from his largesse, since he'd have never been in that situation without their help?
This guy's life is turning into a "flash mob" at Macy's.

I’m going to theorize that Oher, during his football career, listened to and sucked in all his fellow blacks’ anti-white racist crap in the locker room. He became convinced, because of his black heritage, that he was entitled to mo’ money from his white benefactors.

One thing for sure; Oher forever ruined that movie for me. I wouldn’t doubt it ruined it for a lot of other people too. I thought it was a good movie when it came out.

Because I just read Henri Nouwen's "Return of the Prodigal Son", I'm hopeful for them all that one day when Michael's divorce is finalized, he will return from that distant country and reconcile with the people who took him in and provided the loving family life that enabled him to develop his talent.

#1 is probably correct. Mr. Touhy states that the relationship with Michael has always been good until the last yr and a half.

From what lawyers are saying, there was no age 18 time limit for adoption.
