Remember those commercials showing footage of dogs and cats living in deplorable conditions while singer Sarah McLachlan croons about being in the arms of an angel? There is a chance that you might have been moved to donate to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the organization behind those ads.
A recent report might prompt those who supported the ASPCA to reconsider.
The ASPCA has been accused of sitting on hundreds of millions of dollars while giving only two percent of its budget to animal shelters, according to the Center for the Environment and Welfare (CEW).

I love animals and have rescued lots of cats and kittens from my own backyard. I cannot tolerate abuse of an animal in any form. I donate to my local animal charities. Cash, food, blankets, toys and other items. I know the money is going for the care of the animals. Not down some huge rat hole of a very large organization no matter how appealing the organization might appear. Support your local organizations. And if you have the time donate a few hours of your time to help them out.

I've heard these rumors over the years and long ago dropped them and now give direct support to local rescues that seem to be truly devoted to the mission of finding homes for abandoned and abused dogs. I can see through their daily postings that they are having a positive impact.
Today's article shows how corrupt the ASPCA actually is. It's disgusting and heartbreaking!!! While I don't doubt there are many people who give their time and resources to help the animals the group claims to support, this is shocking information FTA:
"While nearly 1 million animals are euthanized each year in the U.S., the ASPCA is paying its executives huge salaries and sitting on hundreds of millions of dollars–including millions socked away in the Caribbean.
According to its most recent tax filings, in 2021 the ASPCA had $390 million in revenue and $575 million in assets, including $310 million in investments and $105 million in savings. The ASPCA has about $11 million in offshore accounts in the Caribbean.
The same filings show that only about 2% of the ASPCA’s budget is given as grants to community pet shelters. The ASPCA’s grants to pet shelters in 2021 are only about half of the money the ASPCA reported keeping in the Caribbean."

I donate regularly to the local animal shelter with cans(dog/cat) and dry food. This way should allow me some added comfort in knowing it is directly going to use. The written checks go for visible needed repairs. Over the years, they have brought more joy than a large segment of humans.

Donating local to shelter and rescue orgs is best. These "national" organizations swim in massively overpaid "management" and are ripe for corruption. We have great orgs right here at home with results I can see with my own eyes.

We really really hate their commercials and will change the channel when one comes on. I hate that they are trying to get legislation in various states against farmers and ranchers "to protect the animals". NONSENSE. Some of that legislation will lead to starvation of the masses.

Do they also get government funds? And I thought charitable orgs had to meet much higher minimums of where the money goes percentage wise, towards the actual charity purpose. Is 2% that minimum?

These days "local" is the way to go; at this point I have suspended support for national charities. My charitable donations are now all to local organizations and will remain that way for the foreseeable future. There are plenty of things in my own backyard that need fixed first.

I gave to both the local and ASPCA but from now on it will be only the local pet shelter.

And we all know how being accused is the same as being guilty, And we know how every trial produces just verdicts... Thanks, alot, politicians, for weaponizing our "justice" system for use as a political tool. How do we reasonably pursue objective justice any more?

This why I donate to Best Friends, they do more to help get rid of "kill" shelters than any other charity I have seen.

Always donate locally if you can. I even donate to a cat sanctuary in Faribault, MN (Furball Farm) and I live in CA, there is also a dog sanctuary (Old Friends) in Mt. Juliet, TN for senior dogs that is awesome. Look into those 2 sanctuaries if you don’t have anything local—they are awesome. I have 2 small cat rescues in my city that get direct donations of cash and items. Most shelters and sanctuaries now have wish lists on their websites where you can order items they need and get them shipped directly. Have avoided the ASPCA for years—I suspected they were bad. Try to give to shelters that don’t receive any tax money as they really need the help.

I hope the next "charity" investigated is the one wanting $25 for a box of food for the 90 year old Jewish woman crying because she is hungry and alone in Ukraine. The box will be what she eats for a month. As they sit in her little run-down hut... the younger lady is using her sad, sad voice begging for help for the Older Jewish people. I change the channel every time...If it is a scam it needs to be stopped.

What OP said. Big “charitable” organizations become top-heavy. Donate to your local humane society.

Many here have posted over the years to donate to your local rescue group, shelter, etc. ASPCA, like the US Humane Society, are drowning in million of dollars that doesn't help the local shelters, etc. Any organization that can afford these commercials and/or mail unsolicited requests for donations along with the free calendar, etc doesn't need your money.

Why am I not surprised. If I were moved to donate, I would probably find a small mom and pop style rescue crew to donate to, not anything run by a national organization like this one. Once they get a taste of that money they raise on the backs of those poor afflicted animals, the animals get thrown under the bus fast.

The ASPCA ads are real tear jerkers...I always think why do they spend so much on ads whenever I see them..and their CEO makes 250K a year but I don't know about any other perks she gets....a Mercedes, private plane??? Dunno...local is the only way to go....

I just arrived from the Way Back Machine. ASPCA is a great reminder of the Presidents Mr. and Mrs. Clinton and their charitable donations of underwear. Did the Blue Dress ever make it to the Smithsonian?

The no-kill cat shelter in my hometown gets my money. Check out the website for the Cat Depot in Sarasota, FL. Your contributions will be well spent.

This was in the news about ten years ago. I suggested to a liberal friend, a big donor, that she donate to the local chapter instead of national. She hasn’t spoken to me since. Liberals are dumb as rocks.

I
This was "exposed" a long time ago and it's only gotten worse! I only donate to local places including those set up to rescue during time of natural disasters. Watch the liberal OUTROAR though when a mostly personally funded place like Big Dog Rescue comes to the aid such as they did during the hurricane that blasted through the Bahamas. Just because the Trumps hosted a fund raising affair for them to assist with their efforts all of a sudden the big liberal loud mouths condemned it? I personally know people who had their dogs rescued by aircraft flown in for that purpose and they kept the animals well taken care of until they could go back. Liberal scams like the ASPCA can't stand independent shelters that don't rely on big splashy advertisement to suck in big bucks. Donating locally is always the best as you know where the $$$$ is going!!

I stopped giving to the Red Cross, Girl Scouts of America and the Salvation Army years ago. No more cookies, and putting money in red kettles for me. It is not surprising that the ASPCA has joined that group. I never gave to them as I've always supported my local animal shelters and will never donate to a national charity again. The late comedian Sam Kennison joked about the Save the Children Charity years ago. He said that the tear-jerking announcer who had a starving fly infested African child nearby should give the child his lunch that he packed for the day. All with his usual comical yell. It was very funny and seeing as how the big national charities are now the joke is on point.

Sounds like the Red Cross after 9/11. They used cash donations to upgrade computer equipment instead of donating to families and businesses affected by the terrorist attack on the towers.
