The Big Apple could be on the hook for more than $300 million per year to provide shelter space in hotels for newly arrived migrants, a Post analysis shows. City officials have either rented or announced plans to secure roughly 5,800 hotel rooms over the last month in response to the influx from the southern border, which quickly overwhelmed the already-strained homeless shelter system.
One of the largest operations is planned for the ROW NYC hotel on 8th Avenue in Midtown, where officials are looking to rent as many as 600 rooms and provide intake and other services for the recent arrivals.

A United Nations diplomat from Africa was accused of rape in Upper Manhattan over the weekend—but NYPD cops released him because he has diplomatic immunity, authorities say. Charles Dickens Imene Oliha, 46—a career diplomat for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in South Sudan—was arrested in Sunday’s alleged broad-daylight sex assault on a woman inside her apartment, according to a police report obtained by The Post on Monday. Oliha was taken into custody on suspicion of rape and brought in for questioning, cops said. But once he informed detectives from the NYPD’s Special Victims Unit that he was a diplomat, investigators confirmed he had immunity

They’re the deep-diving YouTubers who claim to have found missing California teen Kiely Rodni in less than a full day of looking — even after authorities spent nearly 20,000 man-hours failing to find her. Adventures With Purpose started searching Prosser Creek Reservoir on Sunday—and within hours found what they believe is the 16-year-old’s 2013 Honda CRV with a body inside.(Snip)And as with many other such cases, they quickly found success in the Rodni dive despite local law enforcement insisting they had already carried out exhaustive searches in the very areas a body was found. Hours before the crew’s breakthrough Sunday, the sheriff’s offices

City jail stabbings and slashings are on an alarming rise even as the numbers of detainees sinks, city statistics show. For the first seven months of 2022, 296 such incidents were reported—up a dizzying 71% from the 173 reported in the same period last year, the data show. The number of stabbings and slashings in July alone hit 42, nearly matching the 44 reported in the first seven months of 2016—the year a federal monitor was named to address jail violence. The troubling spike comes even though the city’s jail population has plunged in the last six years.(Snip)July’s tally was also a jump from the 39 stabbings

A pair of Georgia siblings have been awarded $1.7billion in punitive damages from Ford for a 2014 car crash that killed their parents.
In 2014, Voncile and Melvin Hill died after their Ford F-250 blew a tire and rolled over. The couple—aged 62 and 74—were on their way to pick up a new tractor part to be used on their farm in Georgia.
A jury this week ruled that they should have survived the crash and would have had the roof of their F-250 been designed properly.
Instead, it crunched under the impact of the roll and the pair later died of injuries.

The Pentagon calls China its primary “pacing challenge” and Russia a major threat to the world order, but the Navy may be facing an even more formidable and insidious challenge to its fleets from within: rust. The U.S. Navy is fighting a never-ending battle against the unsightly reddish-brown streaks and patches caused by the destructive combination of steel hulls, oxygen and seawater.(Snip)Critics say the Navy needs more ships to operate at a much faster mission tempo. They blame environmental concerns about abatement practices and say the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented vessels from pulling into ports for maintenance. “This has changed the way we have approached

Skyrocketing inflation is increasing the burden on American parents to raise children, according to the Brookings Institution. The Wall Street Journal published the left-wing institutions’ analysis that found it can cost up to over $310,605 to raise a child in today’s economy, which works out to an average of $18,271 per year to raise a child born after 2015.(Snip)The Brookings Institution used 2017 data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and adjusted it for current inflation. Along with food prices, the analysis looked at how other expenses contributed to soaring child-raising costs, including housing, clothing, health care, and child care, among other expenses.

Federal prosecutors have brought charges against a family they say conspired to smuggle a 10-year-old illegal immigrant girl into the country and then put her through a living hell in which she was raped repeatedly, stabbed with a kitchen knife and subjected to regular beatings. The case is one of the more horrific examples of immigrants abusing the “family loophole” in border policy, with an overwhelmed federal government assisting in the abuse. In this instance, that meant accepting the word of the illegal immigrant family that they were related to two Guatemalan girls. The government approved the family as sponsors and delivered the girls to situations that turned

Rep. Dan Crenshaw on Sunday criticized fellow Republicans who continue to call for the FBI to be defunded over its search of former President Donald Trump’s private home. Mr. Crenshaw, Texas Republican, has emerged as a leading critic of those like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Georgia Republican, who advocate to “defund the FBI”—a position he compared to far-left Democrats’ calls to “defund the police.” “It’s crazy, and it makes us seem like extremist Democrats,” he told CNN’s “State of the Union.” “Marjorie and [Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, New York Democrat] can go join the ‘defund the law enforcement’ club if they want; 99% of Republicans are not
