The US labor market took a hit in October from an extended strike at General Motors but the economy kept adding jobs at a solid pace, the government reported Friday. The steady hiring showed demand for workers remained resilient despite President Donald Trump's protracted trade war with China, which has chilled investment and slowed the economy. Employers added 128,000 net new jobs, the Labor Department reported in the closely watched monthly employment report, defying many economists who expected a sharper slowdown. Gains in the prior months were revised upward sharply and wages continued to climb, making the jobs picture even rosier. Meanwhile, the jobless rate rose a

Following September’s blockbuster employment report, the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday said more records were set in October. A record 158,510,000 Americans are now working, the 23rd such record since President Donald Trump took office. The nation’s labor force participation rate also set a Trump-era high of 63.3 percent. This number is explained in greater detail below, but the higher, the better. Payroll taxes from people who work help support programs for those who don't. The economy added 128,000 jobs in October, higher than economists expected, given the General Motors strike that began on Sept. 15 and lasted six weeks.

Job creation was much stronger than expected in October. The U.S. economy added 128,000 jobs for the month and the unemployment rate rose to 3.6 percent, higher than the month before but still near a 50-year low. Economists had expected the economy to add 75,000 jobs, with forecasts ranging between 55,000 and 155,000, according to Econoday. That unusually wide range was caused, in part, by differing views of how the General Motors strike would hit employment at suppliers and related businesses. Unemployment was expected to tick up to 3.6 percent. Prior months were revised upward, indicating that the labor market has been much stronger than initial reports suggested.

For the third time in a row since Common Core was fully phased in nationwide, U.S. student test scores on the nation’s broadest and most respected test have dropped, a reversal of an upward trend between 1990 and 2015. Further, the class of 2019, the first to experience all four high school years under Common Core, is the worst-prepared for college in 15 years, according to a new report. The National Assessment of Educational Progress is a federally mandated test given every other year in reading and mathematics to students in grades four and eight. (Periodically it also tests other subjects and grade levels.) In the latest results,

In 1776, 56 men signed the Declaration of Independence, knowing that their actions would be viewed as treason by the prevailing power. Should the revolution fail, they were signing their death certificates.Indeed, many paid a heavy price. Five were captured, tortured, and killed. Nine more were killed in the fighting and the hardships it produced. Many sacrificed sons, homes, and livelihoods. But these brave patriots helped win America's independence and set it on a path to become a constitutional republic.Fast-forward a mere 240 years. A group of corrupt and craven people gathered in secret to once again consider radical actions.

The House voted today to go forward with impeachment proceedings against President Trump. This is, I guess, a news story, although it couldn’t possibly have been news to anyone. The Democrats have been talking about impeaching Trump since before he was inaugurated, and it was a foregone conclusion, when they took over the House last November, that he would be impeached. The brief pause in providing arms to Ukraine (which the Obama administration never did) and Trump’s entirely proper telephone conversation with President Zelensky are absurdly weak pretexts for the Democrats’ impeachment effort, and I doubt whether anyone takes them seriously.

Another day, another giant step on the road to ruin. Either Nancy Pelosi has lost her mind or she really wants to dig America’s grave. The vote to formalize the impeachment jihad is a great day for Trump haters and a tragedy for democracy and common sense. Coming a year before an election and without a compelling claim that the president committed anything remotely resembling “high crimes and misdemeanors,” the action is an abuse of power for purely partisan purposes. The timing is also exquisite. Voting on Halloween, and on the same day when Democratic Rep. Katie Hill took to the House floor
California Is Becoming Unlivable replies

Right now, wildfires are scorching tens of thousands of acres in California, choking the air with smoke, spurring widespread prophylactic blackouts, and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people. Right now, roughly 130,000 Californians are homeless, and millions more are shelling out far more in rent than they can afford, commuting into expensive cities from faraway suburbs and towns, or doubling up in houses and apartments. Wildfires and lack of affordable housing—these are two of the most visible and urgent crises facing California, raising the question of whether the country’s dreamiest, most optimistic state is fast becoming unlivable. Climate change is turning

The August death of Jeffrey Epstein in a New York City jail has been subject to all manner of conspiracy-minded speculation. The October 30 opinion of Michael Baden, the forensic pathologist hired by Epstein’s brother, that the manner of death “points to homicide rather than suicide,” contradicting the conclusion of the Office of Chief Medical Examiner, will almost certainly stoke further speculation that Epstein, awaiting trial on federal child-pornography charges, met with foul play. Whether that speculation is warranted interested me far less than the 85-year-old man giving this dissenting opinion. Michael Baden has spent decades as the go-to freelance medical examiner on the media and lecture circuit.

The Justice Department filed suit Wednesday alleging Walmart denied a Navy Reserve officer a job due to upcoming reserve duties. In May 2016, Hunger said she applied for a summer job at Walmart while in the Naval Reserve. After applying online, she received a call from a Walmart in Grand Junction, Colo. At the end of the call, Hunger mentioned she had to attend a mandatory two-week annual training for reserve duty during the summer. The personnel coordinator from Walmart told Hunger Walmart could not support that kind of time off, and ended the call. She never heard from the superstore again.

A Pennsylvania pizza shop stepped up to help a teen who lost his father a few months ago after his bike was stolen outside the restaurant earlier this month. A new bike was gifted to Charly Spor, 17, on Thursday after Brian Himes, the owner of Italian Style Pizza & Pasta in Folcroft, Pa., and members of the community raised more than $200 in five days. Spor, an aspiring chef, stepped up to become the man of the family for his mom and three siblings after he lost his dad in January, Fox 29 reported. Himes told Fox News on Thursday that Spor is one of his favorite customers.

The Trump re-election campaign launched an ad blistering the Democrats during Game 7 of the World Series on Wednesday night. The ad touted the president’s successes including “obliterating ISIS,” and “cutting illegal immigration in half. “But the Democrats would rather focus on impeachment and phony investigations, ignoring the real issues,” the ad notes. “He’s no Mr. Nice Guy, but sometimes it takes a Donald Trump to change Washington,” the TV commercial continued. Campaign chief Brad Parscale later tweeted the half-minute ad that slammed the Democrats for a sham impeachment.

Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN) took aim at the president ahead of the impeachment inquiry resolution vote in the House on Thursday, defending their party’s decision to pursue an inquiry and telling the president to “read the Constitution.” Prior to Thursday morning’s vote, the Trump wrote, “READ THE TRANSCRIPT!”– a reference to his July 25 conversation with Volodymyr Zelensky: [tweet] A so-called “whistleblower” sparked the initial inquiry, and the White House released a transcript of the conversation in response to the mounting concerns. The transcript did not show “pressure” or quid pro quo, as many Democrat lawmakers have suggested.

Support for President Trump has increased amid the Democrats’ pursuit of impeachment, Republican National Committee (RNC) polling shows. The House is soon to vote on an impeachment resolution, which Republicans say does little to nothing to address their mounting concerns. Under the resolution put forth by Democrats, Republicans would not be able to call the “whistleblower” to testify. It also includes a “loophole” that gives Democrats unprecedented power throughout the process. As Roll Call reports: Under the House Judiciary procedures, Trump and his counsel will be invited to attend all panel proceedings and ask questions.

The celebrated Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has threatened to quit Facebook if the social media platform refuses to silence her critics. “I am, like many others, questioning whether I should keep using Facebook or not,” Thunberg wrote in a Facebook post last week. “Allowing hate speech, the lack of fact-checking and, of course, the issues of interfering with democracy… are among many, many other things that are very upsetting.” “The constant lies and conspiracy theories about me and countless others, of course, result in hate, death threats and ultimately violence. This could easily be stopped if Facebook wanted to. I find the lack of taking responsibility very disturbing,” she added.

In the past, it was generally the case that attacks on U.S. weapons systems came from the Left. Numerous useful weapons, including the AGM-65 Maverick, the M-1 Abrams, the M-2 Bradley, the B-1 Lancer, the AGM-86 ALCM, and the MGM-31 Pershing, have been attacked, ridiculed, and downplayed by leftist interests. In some cases, as with the B-1, they were quite successful. (It was canceled outright by Jimmy Carter, though later revived by Ronald Reagan.) In recent years, these campaigns have expanded to include the right. The F-22 Raptor, after a lengthy campaign, was canceled
