Republicans have had trouble mounting an effective defense on President Trump’s Ukraine call, because they haven’t put down their stakes on the most defensible ground. Complaints about House Democrats’ less-than-transparent impeachment process, though justified, were clearly perishable once Democrats adopted more regular proceedings. The contention that Trump’s phone call to the Ukrainian president was “perfect” was never going to withstand scrutiny. The line that there was “no quid pro quo” has become steadily less plausible

FTA: ”The best defense Republicans can muster is that nothing came of it.”
In the absence of evidence of an impeachable act no defense is needed. A defense infers there’s evidence of a wrongful act.
I don’t have to mount a defense, such as self defense, for hitting someone i did not hit.
Trump was conducting foreign policy because he was elected president. Some junior colonel doesn’t have the right to impeach Trump just because he doesn’t agree with the policy.

"The line that there was “no quid pro quo” has become steadily less plausible as more testimony has emerged suggesting that Trump withheld security aid to Ukraine in the hopes that the Kiev government would announce an investigation into the 2016 election and the gas company Burisma and/or Joe and Hunter Biden."
Why don't you specifically quote the "testimony" that has made the true story "steadily less plausible," Rich, ol' boy. Just help us poor folks out who have only read the actual transcript of the call itself. Thanks!

What kind of a government do we have that lets outlaw politicians (socialists) run roughshod over our president and the voters without having the ability to stop them in their tracks? Is it the republican politicians that are helpless and weak and UN-knowledgeable about what they could/should be doing to protect this republic from socialist/commies? Something is not right when EVIL wins! Are our laws written to screw the right?

"All of this bears some resemblance to Trump’s alleged obstruction of justice during special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation in to “collusion.”"
Nope, there is no resemblance or moral equivalence between an innocent man and a guilty one. Remember we have Biden publically crowing over his "getting the prosecutor fired". That is what is called an "admission of guilt" or confession.
BTW, if the President of the United States decided to withhold funding to a foreign country in furtherance of a goal of the US, that is a legitimate use of leverage, just as putting tariffs on a foreign country is a form of leverage. The president can do this no matter how many in the government disagree with him. He is the chief executive and has that power. Trump has the right, as President, to further the pursuit of justice even if it does inconvenience a guilty dem. Running for office does not give someone immunity from investigation, especially when there is sufficient evidence to create concern. Biden's brags are exactly such evidence.
The reality that it benefits Trump politically is irrelevant unless the accusations are completely without merit. Biden has taken that reason off the table.

Democrats (and Rich Lowry) seem to think running for president is a "Get out of jail free card" for all past crimes otherwise asking a foreign government to help you catch a crook would not be an impeachable offense. The actual best defense here is to say yes we did pressure Ukraine to help us catch a crook so what? That is what the president's job is - chief law enforcement officer. Now go pound sand and get ready to get thrashed in the next election because the American people aren't stupid. They know why we have a president and they know why we have jails and they know who belongs in them.

When a effing idiot, NeverTrumper puke like Lowry says nasty, false things like "The line that there was “no quid pro quo” has become steadily less plausible." - HE has be come totally NON-plausible.
I have read the transcript. There is NOTHING whatsoever wrong with the phone call. There is no problem at all with ANYTHING that the President said, or did.
Go to Hades, Lowry. You are wrong, the President is right and we stand behind him 100%.

I'd suggest a firing squad for the plotters.

Apparently, Lowry has not read the transcript of the phone call! Or, like the rest of the democrats and never-Trumpers, he is ignoring it.
How did our institutions get so dishonest?
