‘April is the cruellest month,” T.S. Eliot wrote in his epic poem “The Waste Land.” This year, it seems many American taxpayers might be inclined to agree with the venerable poet. More people than not say they will be paying more in taxes this year, not less, and call the federal tax code unfair, the latest I&I/TIPP Poll shows.
In its monthly national online poll, I&I/TIPP asked 1,464 adults about their taxes. The poll, taken from March 31 to April 2, has a margin of error of +/-2.7 percentage points.
The first question: “Compared to last year, do you feel your federal taxes are …”,

If they would do away with the fraud and waste, taxes could probably be lowered 35% with no discernable loss of services.

The taxpayers should be furious. Everyone on the planet is looting the treasury and all they hear is that they are not paying their "fair share".

A general question about taxes being high or unfair will always garner a yes response. This will always immediately be associated with federal taxes. But is that what people were really responding to? Or, we're they responding to overall federal, state, and local taxes as a whole. Federal taxes have been cut and many people pay little to zero federal taxes. However, state and local taxes are out of control (especially in red states). Unfortunately, the President gets blamed for these taxes that he has nothing to do with. The media needs to differentiate between these taxes in their reporting.

Tax the poor! Rush made an April Fools Joke about this over twenty years ago, but there is some truth to it. Everybody should pay something so that they have skin in the game.

The tax code has always been unfair. As with every poll, it all depends upon who you ask.

In 2017, for some reason, property THEFT losses for personal property were no longer a tax deduction.
I had 138,000.00 USD stolen from me via a hacked account in 2025.
Not only can I NOT deduct that... I have to pay the taxes on the capital gains that were associated with the trades the theft made in my account.
So... not a happy camper here but I know this is an extreme outlier.

Issues and Insights is not a neutral poll. They barely hide their TDS and try very hard to paint it over with an intellectual veneer - hence the T. S. Eliot quote.

That is ridiculous! We seniors got a substantial extra deduction from the big beautiful bill, as did those who earn tips.
If I had understood how helpful it was going to be, I would have taken more of a RMD from my 401k at this lower tax rate. I will know next year.

For taxes to be literally fair, everyone should pay the same percentage on the same kind of money. Money spent, money earned on investing, money gained from employment, whatever. No matter who, no matter where, no matter how much, same percentage for everyone. Giving a break to some while penalizing others is obviously not fair.

The 20% that pay 90% of the taxes do face higher taxes this year.

Blue states gouge their citizens with ridiculously high taxes BUT thanks to raising SALT limits to $40,000, they are able to just deduct that from their federal taxes. Those of us in smart red states without an income tax pay our fair share of federal tax. Why shouldn't Californians, New Yorkers, etc.???

Could it be their income was higher? But, on the bright side eggs and milk are cheaper.

As usual, the average TV educated voter is a moron. Do they know the difference between paying state taxes and federal, because federal is down, especially for seniors. Nice job by the asleep at the wheel, media department of the Trump administration. Maybe if he would take a break from tweeting, someone could remind the average voter of what has been accomplished. It is getting closer to midterms and if this is the level of explaining things like taxes now and taxes under rats, we are doomed.
