Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D) on Monday signed into law a bill eliminating tax exemptions for multiple organizations connected to the Confederacy.
Democrats in the Virginia House and Senate passed HB167 with vote totals of 62-35 and 21-17, respectively, earlier this year. The bill specifically removes the Virginia Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) and the Confederate Memorial Literary Society, among other similar groups, from the list of organizations exempt from state property taxes.
The UDC, a nonprofit, was founded in 1894 by women “seeking to honor their family members and ancestors” who served in the Confederate military or contributed to the Southern war effort, its website states.

Many blacks voluntarily fought for the Confederacy. History should be factual. Not the captive of current political fashion. Was the civil war really fought to free the slaves or protect economic interests?

Take the state to court! Sue until hell won’t have the governor. I’m a Yankee by birth, from the Land of Lincoln. History is history. Taxing what we don’t like doesn’t change history or what we don’t like. Since when do we get to tax organizations just because we don’t like them?

Does she know they were Democrats?
As I understand it, the Civil War was about Secession. Stgopping the ddiideing of our ccountry. Emancipation was not the original goal.

Because nothing is more important than hammering in historic groups who celebrate their history of a war which ended over 150 years ago.

Slavery in the largely agricultural South had been an issue, but the secession of Southern states over that and states rights is what led to the war.

Democrats were the slave owners and the ones who started the Civil War. President Lincoln was one of the first Republicans, He wanted to abolish slavery, but his main goal was to keep the United States united. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation to get European support, and end that support for the South.

Whatever happened to the "affordability" issue that she ran on? How does this make Virginia more affordable? Maybe she thinks she's fighting Trump or something which is all Dems seems to have as policy these days. Next she'll be digging up their gravesites.

I'm assuming that tax-exemption will include other groups who supported the Confederacy, like the Democrat Party.
Oops. Silly me.

Note to Nothingberger and Virginia Democrats: The Civil War ended 161 years ago, and there was a clear winner.

Both of the cited organizations are tax exempt 501(c)(3) charities. That's a federal issue, not a state. My prediction: The state will try to tax them, they'll refuse to pay, it'll go to court, and a judge will poke the State of Virginia in the eye with a blunt stick. The only people to make money will be the lawyers, and Spanberger will be long out of office before the fallout hits.

Agree with #20. Virginia can't revoke their Federal non-profit status, and as long as they have it, the state has to honor it. Federal law is superior to state law.

The Confederacy and slavery is a part of history whether modern people approve of it or not. What's next for Spanberger, confiscating all lands that were set aside for conquered Native Americans and removing their benefits and privileges? How about closing down all of those nasty military bases on the coast and renaming anything named after a Civil War general?

Spamberger is catching the flack, and deservedly so but the fault lies with every piece of Demorat scum in the Virginia legislature.
Just as it does in Maryland, with our Demorat scum Governor and legislature.
Republicans fight it but we are outnumbered.

Did the ante-bellum North promote taxation on southern cotton sold to Europe?
===
(According to AI, below)
Yes, the antebellum North implemented high protective tariffs that significantly affected the Southern economy. These tariffs were designed to protect Northern industries but had adverse effects on the South, particularly regarding cotton exports.
Effects on Southern Cotton Exports:
Reduced Demand: The high tariffs made it more expensive for European buyers to purchase Southern cotton. This led to a decrease in demand for cotton in Europe, which was crucial for the Southern economy.
Economic Consequences: As cotton prices fell due to reduced demand, Southern planters faced severe financial difficulties. The reliance on cotton exports meant that any decline in sales directly impacted their income and economic stability.
Summary of Tariff Impact:
ASPECT DETAILS
Tariff Purpose Protect Northern Industries
Effect on Cotton Prices High tariffs led to lower cotton prices in Europe
Economic Impact Financial strain on Southern planters
The combination of high tariffs and the South's dependence on cotton exports created a challenging economic environment, contributing to tensions that would eventually lead to the Civil War.

Spanberger needs more money to spend on wasteful Democrat programs. The Democrat governor and state legislators have already spent the surplus that the previous Republican governor left them as well as all the new taxes they passed. But, they still need more. So they are removing nonprofits tax exempt status so they can tax their assets as well.
Remember, Democrats love to tax and spend other people’s money.

This is shameful to punish the descendants of Confederate soldiers who died defending a cause they believed was lawful and honorable. A cheap political trick.
